Five Quick Thoughts

(1) Lovie Smith has announced that Devin Hester will not be on kickoff returns.  And so we have the first awful coaching decision of the 2010 season.  Why any coach would self-neuter arguably the most exciting talent and explosive game-changer in the history of the organization is beyond me.  But it's par for the course.

(2) Adewale Oguleye is officially no longer a Chicago Bear.  His career is Chicago was solid if unspectacular.  He feasted on weaker opponents and disappeared on pivotal third-and-longs.  He was a good guy, though, and did the uniform proud.

(3) The Star-Telegram is reporting that most believe the Bears will be the Cowboy opponent on Thanksgiving afternoon.  This guarantees that my family will be irate as I choose not to listen to their tiring anecdotes and instead travel down the road to the always-open Silver Bell Tavern.

(4) From Brad Biggs:

There also is a possibility the Bears could play their road
game vs. Buffalo in Toronto this year. At worst, the Bears have a
1-in-6 chance of being selected for the date because the Bills have
already played AFC East rivals Miami and the New York Jets in Canada.
Of course, the league might say it's time for the Patriots to take
their turn.

The Bears, especially with a Mike Martz offense, would be thrilled to end up in Toronto and in a dome.  The Buffalo Bills are going to be pretty terrible this year and avoiding their homefield advantage should make this the Bears most winnable road game.

(5) If the Bears get very lucky this year, safety Morgan Burnett of Georgia Tech will fall into the third round.  The Bears need interior of the offensive line and safety still.

  • Taylor does make us stronger at the RB position but if we don't crap a guard or 2 it won't make a difference who's in the backfield. I seriously don't want to see another 3.5 - 3.9 yds per carry again. Please tell me we will fix our line Jerry.

  • 1) rediculous, as I've already mentioned. Enough to fire lovie now in my mind. He's a stubborn mule who simply can't learn.

    2) Exactly. Best of luck wale.

    3) Meh

    4) We'll take a win wherever we can get it, but in general, who cares... it's the Bills.

    5) Strong, young DB help is always good.

    My $.02

  • Last year we averaged 4.0 yds per carry which was 25th. Even Detroit had more yards rushing last year.

  • our needs this offseason have never changed:

    1. O line - 2 FA guards and some young draftees

    2. DB help - A real FS or two and a CB or two

None of this was addressed with JA/LS's shopping spree. Reading the article on Ato last string... the guy is a badass. If we don't pick up at the very least a LG and a FS in free agengy, we're going to find ourselves proper fucked with just one or two ill-timed injuries next year.

I've said it, even through the highs of our new tenders, JA and LS need to be fired now before they can do much more damage next season. We may still win games, and maybe even pull out a shocker to get into the playoffs, but gents... we're never going to be a 'good' team/org until we take out the trash in a big way. I'm still hoping that happens next year.

Oh, don't worry about JA or LS they

  • Hey Lovie, you're the coach. What in theeee hell are you doing? Put Hester back where he belongs and stop jacking around.

  • Martz has to have given his blessing on the decision to keep DH a mainstay on offense. You have 3 weeks to make it work Martz, no more.

  • Yet ANOTHER item for my "Lovie Smith Personnel Moves That Boggle The Mind" file.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Lovie has too much power...he must be stopped!

  • In reply to Joseph:

Stopped like Phil the Groundhog? Do you have to stop him? Just drive him into a quarry. You might live though...well, probably not after the explosion.

  • In reply to mikebdot:

I thought Groundhog Day was made up. I thought it was a brilliant parody of how fucked up people are. Just recently I find out it's real. Punxatawny. Jebus.

  • In reply to Joseph:

Well done Lovie and JA. There goes our best shot at dumping our most famous 'H-Back' ever and getting a sweet 2nd rounder for him.

Jebus, these guys are already begging for a firing. 1000 demerits each for fuked sake!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Knox made the probowl as a kick returner last year. The last time Hester was returning all of our kicks he was not good. He kept running backwards and falling down the way that I remember it. I don't think this is as bad a move as most of you guys think. Wouldn't be a bad idea to throw him back there with knox on occasion either as a decoy or for a reverse or some such shit.

Like it or not, Hester is our most explosive guy on offense, and it would not behoove us to use him too much on special teams.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Stache...I think my problem is that we had one of the most explosive offensive weapons in DH as a KR and we start the Hekyl/Jekyl experiment and you see were that has gotten us. I beleive he is not a #1 WR maybe a #3 at best and his routs need major improvement. LDL & JA have done a Vulcan Mind Sweep and this is what we have...

Hey maybe we can ask the Colts WR coach to help..BBBBBBBAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAHHHHAAAA

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Can someone help me with this. For the last few years, this Devin Hester will return Punts, not kicks, has made ZERO sense.

    A) You are far more likely to get injured on a Punt return, IMO.
    B) A guy like Devin is far more dangerous with time to get a head start and survey the field
C)Why make Devin make a decision (i.e. Fair catch inside the 5 yard line for example). Nothing against the guy, but if you need proof that he's not the sharpest cat, just check out his twitter account. Its barely legible.

Feel like Im taking crazy pills? Can someone in the god damn press room just ask WHY PUNTS INSTEAD OF KICKS!! WHY

Ok, I'm going to do it. I know it's so damn early, but I have to. After two consecutive days of total and complete idiocy ALREADY, I am calling for Lovie smith to be fired TO-FUCKING-DAY. BEFORE he can continue to utterly fuck another (somewhat) promising season.

Even those of you on this blog who like Olsen and want him to stay, have to admit that we now have 6 fucking TEs on this team if you count the new fullback

You are assuming NE would give us a 2nd rounder for Olsen. If Boldin only got a 3 ...

Patience my man. Look around, there isn't much happening on any NFL personnel front. Wait until the draft. After June 1st there should be another flurry.

FA is always crazy the first weekend (when EVERYONE over pays) and then after that it's all gamesmanship between GM's and agents trying to see who will blink first.

If we start training camp in July with no decent FS, very little depth at CB and no changes to the OL, I'll carry a torch with ya. Until then, patience is indees a virtue.

    Go Bears!

After reading that article about the Redskins it made me think about how hard it is to be in the NFL. Colt Brennan was a total stud in college and now he can't into a game. I thought that kid was going to tear it up.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

"He can block the way most tight ends can, but in the passing game he is a step ahead."

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

And as for "draft/FA" isn't over ... in some areas it is. They've already said they're set at receiver. Until Jay Cutler has a big bodied NFL target whereby he can roll out when he's in trouble and toss it downfield as a jump ball, we are not a football team IMHO. Yes, Shabba gives us that in some measure, but he's only one guy and short on experience. How people don't think T.O could help this team beggars belief. I get that we're not going to make the super bowl move and make Marshall a Bear. I get that. We all have so much confidence in Angelo's first round reaches that there's no way we're giving up next year's pick for the leading receiver in the NFL over the last four years. The man Asomugha called the hardest player to bring down in the NFL. Nah, we don't need him ... we've got six foot Earl Bennett and a failed receiver experiment at 5'8/5'9 and a six foot speedster in Knox. None of these guys has instilled confidence in the brain game. All have had problems with learning. Shabba is our guy. But if we want to talk about playoffs and beyond, Shabba needs to be our #2 and we need to find an NFL receiver. Don't even fucking mention the draftee last year and I don't mean Kinder ... our offense is not even half-way there yet ....

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Again, before anyone mentions Greg as being a big receiver, I meant a receiver that will leave their feet and dirty their uniform .... that and the 2.7 YAC thing ....

Although I would love to see the Cheerleaders back(HoneyBears). OR the Polar Bear Babes!!

  • In reply to Joseph:

Joe, liked your last avatar more.

  • In reply to Dmband:

Lovie are you fuckin serious? The best return man in the game possibly the best of all time and you take that from him and this team by tryin to force him into something he is not so great at.. make him a FULL TIME KR and a PART TIME WR. He isnt our #1 WR anymore or our 2 or three... so what is he then?

  • In reply to Dmband:

Why only punts? First, if he's a starting WR, which he is, there's only so many yard in his legs. You can't be a full-time KR, PR AND WR or your legs will be like a hooker's snatch -- not so fresh.

What set Hester apart was his ability to change direction at full speed, his ability to hit full speed in about 1.5 strides, his vision and his instincts. Manning and Knox are both faster than Hester, but not quicker. That's why Hester's returning punts -- it plays to his strengths more than kick offs.

One other thing, if you think Martz will do a better job getting Hester the ball in space please raise your hand.

  • In reply to jdawg:

Gotta agree. If it turns out that Devin isn't getting as much time at WR and has some gas in the tank, by all means have him return kick offs. If he's logging lots of time at WR, stick to just the punts.

I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised to see our WR's catching the ball in space this year.

    Go Bears!

  • In reply to jdawg:

Fox's Chris Landry, a pundit whose opinions I respect, has come up with the best idea I've ever heard regarding overtime: Just count it as "the 5th quarter" and pick up the game exactly where it ends in regulation. End of coin flip. End of teams taking a knee deep in their own end with time running down in tie games. Frankly, I think it's a brilliant concept which does not bastardize the rules of the game.

Since my long dormant interest in NHL Hockey has perked up (now that Chicago once again has a franchise) let me add that I would shitcan the shootout concept. Play 1 complete 20 minute sudden death period for the regular season games. If it's tied after that, so be it, BUT... I would treat all ties as a loss. No point awarded, ergo no longer any reason to PLAY for a tie.
Imagine the kind of hockey you'd see late in tie games if a WIN was the only way to get any points in the standings. In the old days, they called it FIRE WAGON Hockey.

  • In reply to jdawg:

Martz brings a lot to the offensive table, for sure, but I think we all need to be wary of just HOW MUCH he'll be able to install in only his first year. Putting a new offensive system in place isn't as simple as changing dead batteries or a blown fuse.

One of the reasons Narcissus wanted to go to MinneaNoPlace was so he wouldn't have to learn a new offensive system.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I'm sick of hearing people complain about learning a new offensive system. Our old offensive system sucked.

I don't agree with A) at all. I think people are far more likely to be blindsided on kickoffs and thus far more likely to get hurt. I believe hester tweaked his leg in '08 on a kickoff return, not a punt return...maybe I'm not remembering correctly though...

With backup reading! (second article was linked from first, but thought I'd throw it in there)

I'm not sure if anyone has actually acquired the data or not, but I would think kickoffs are far more dangerous due to the reasons mentioned in the article.

  • In reply to mikebdot:

Also, I'm wondering if the "wedge rule" had any effect on their logic to keep him off kickoffs as well.

  • In reply to mikebdot:

Alex Brown deserves a HELL of a lot better from the Chicago Bears.

Lovie Smith warrants being fired on the strength of his repeated personnel and staffing (Can you say "Ron Rivera") gaffes alone.

    O.T. Point taken, Dm.

Bottom line for me? I didn't think the system was broken in the first place.

Like I said when I prefaced my thoughts on the matter, you're paid to play defense too o just shut up and do it.
Recent stat I saw said only 1 in 4 O.T. games ends on the first posession. That doesn't strike me as a huge anomaly. Mike Brown was ALWAYS happy to start an O.T. on defense, no?

  • In reply to mikebdot:

Why is this team so fascinated with moving players out of their natural positions? Izzie outside, Gilbert and Melton inside. Just a couple more additions to the long list of position changes.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    OK -- the loyal opposition

I believe we sent a KR to the pro bowl (albeit as an alternate), who was the third best KR on our team. If it was turner running the Offense I'd be pissed about Hester. But this isn't Turner, its Martz. I'm not saying its a great idea to keep Hester off KRs, but I'm going to wait 3 or 4 games into the season to see exactly what they do with Hester before I blow a fuse. I don't think we're going to see a lot of bubble screens, reverses, etc...

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Regarding the buffalo game...I'm just happy we get to play those sacks of monkey shit this year.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Well, not playing Hester in his natural role could be worse. At least we have 2 guys that have done the job well (Manning and Knox), so we should be pleased to have someone who can fill the void. But agreed, Lovie needs to take a step back and realize Hester is not Wes Welker.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

solid points made boys, I'll take Knox on kickoffs if Martz has a plan for Hester. I really miss old Devin though. He used to run predominantly north/south with a couple of speed jukes to keep guys off balance. He was going for the big contract so he ran with reckless adandon. It was extremely fun while it lasted.

Remember when he would be lining up to return the kick and that silly but slightly catchy rap song would be playing? The crowd knew he was going to take it to the fucking house and so did the other team. There was pure adrenaline in the air.

Turning an awesome returner into an average receiver at best has worked like a charm. Olsen's been getting bad press (us!) as he continues his impression of a football player, so now Gump has to show us how good a running back he is - days after Mike Bell gets picked up for 1.7 Mill ? Please help us here Lord..we promise to be as good as we possibly can! All we want is a SB to celebrate winning in 2010. After all, you had your turn last year with the "Saints" winning it...right!

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

I isn't a pious man... I just don't get Lovie as Jebus? If anything he should be the leader of the Romans, fucking everything up without reason or compassion. Or some other reallt repulsive, shitty character in that story.

Man, am I out of my element. I'll just shut up now. MaddBear's answer was much better.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Jeff, I take issue with point #5. There will not be any impact safeties available by the time our number is called in the third round. There will be a decent gaurd or two available and I think that's what our first pick will be. Our roster is deep in 3rd and 4th round under achievers on D.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

And is Morgan Burnett our safety for the next 8 years ? Is he a stud ? A game changer ? A playmaker ? Can we get a great guard in the 4th round ? Can we get another good center/guard or another tackle if we grab a pedestrian safety in the third round ?

*Probably not* answers all of the above. If we're not going to convert next year's first rounder into Brandon Marshall (which we won't because that would be what a Super Bowl team does), then at least let's grab the best safety in the draft next year and none of this 'Don't draft a safety early' GM bullshit-speak.

Olsen on the field was a big enough liability, but putting him in the backfield, Jebus lovie ... is it a tumour ? You need an MRI dude ...

Here's food for thought. Shabba breaks his leg in the first game, breaks it off in Jessica Simpson and falls out of the shower. Whatever. Fancy your receivers for a 16-game season and playoffs now ? Hester, Knox and Bennett, scraping the stratosphere with their Herculean leaps ... eesh. Iglesias might surface in 2012 when the penny starts to drop with the new offense. Ditto Bennett. Ditto Hester for that matter.

Good flick. I guess while Bullock was making the movie, she was getting blindsided (I know, bad taste, bad karma, and too easy). Ouch though.

Either Lovie is just doing his Loviespeak or he and Martz will end up in a lovers quarrell before the year is out. I don't remember Lovie getting involved with the O during Turner's tenure but who know's?

Hopefully the rumor mill going on about McNabb to STL with the FS tossed into the trade, will get JA off his ass and trade a draft pick for the FS. I think Tice will make a difference with the OL so my biggest worry is the DB's.

    Go Bears!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I have to admit I liked the film. And yes, I too got something in my eye at an innapropriate moment. Bullock is extremely watchable in it, the kid is a lot bigger than Oher, but definitely a good date movie. Cheating on Sandra Bullock though. What an asshole.

Dear LDL & JA...heres a smart move for the Draft. lets just spend it all on WR's.. trade JP, CT for first and second rounds and just get WR's for every round there after...I mean this makes sense in LDL's World.

No need for O-Line because JC will just throw it all day long bootlegging from left to right.. score... say 60 points a game. O.K. so he looks like Bambi running for his life our great H-Back will protect him. With the great blocking he has provided for us so farJC is in great shape.

Now lets trade all D-Line also we can get more WR's so JC can throw to.them also maybe keep LB & BU but as for the DB get rid of them all again trade them for more WR'S.. Oh thats right we have no need for saftey..great

It will look like Madden 10... three on three.. NICE LOVIE!!!!

    4. Sucks when you have to leave the country to hope to win an away game.

    5. I don't want us to draft a safety. The Bears just suck at the draft (with a few exceptions). While the purse is still open, buy us a safety (Atogwe would do nicely) and a guard. Then waste draft picks on whatever you want, preferably big mean O Linemen.

  • Have we given up on Kevin Payne? Seems like not long ago he looked like he could be a solid S for years.

  • In reply to zmac:

Looks like we have. 'AntiPlank Weapon' is rated above him now. Here's a guy I didn't think was in the NFL this year.

Oh - and Jeff is wrong on Hester. Danial Manning is by far the best KR we have along with Knox. PR and KR are very different skills.

  • I'm not surprised by Lovie's stubborn comments, he has proven over and over he is going to do it his way. But, the contradictions between Martz and Lovie's comments are embarrassing. Martz came in a couple months ago and says that Skunk should be given a healthy dose of kick returns. Then, yesterday, Lovie says that he won't get any KR chances. Our brass runs the team like a minor league squad.

I'm with J-dawg re Hester. Knox has proven he can be a lethal kick returner. Hester seemed to have lost his mojo on returns at the end of his reign. Like I've said before, great returners seem to fade fastest, I think KR is the hardest position to maintain excellence over a long period of time. Hester has spent his recent time learning the WR position, and he'll get more touches at receiver. With a full years experience and built chemistry w/ Cuts under his belt, I think Skunk becomes the explosive WR most of us thought he'd become when we heard of the move. It would be a different story if we didn't have Knox and a consistently great special teams unit.

  • In reply to crowntheirass:

Something tells me to get used to Martz and Lovie contradicting each other in the paper.

  • Murph, you're better than that.

  • Quite honestly, I think they should have just left the overtime rule as it was. The whole reason for sudden death end was neither team got the job done during the regular game. So it goes to SD to determine a winner. The whole purpose behind this is not to make it fair so that both teams get an equal chance to score (which in my opinion it should be left a tie for not getting the job done when you had an hour plus to do it) it is so the media can run more commercials to make more money and it opens the door for more injuries in the extended playing time. During the regular season..no overtime...playoffs and the SB..sudden death. You get a half a point for a tie and if you miss the playoffs by a half a game..tough shit..next year play better. The way it was... was fair because each team had an equal opportunity to win the toss to receive the ball. Just because some team has a better kicker than the other is not a matter of fairness...hire a better kicker. I know most or you are gonna that these players make a lot of money for what they do...supply and demand...just like any other job.
Just my opinion, this is just a move for the media to extend TV and cable time for more commercials.
Gee do you think the owners asked the players what they thought? NOT

What's even more Lovie-like, they'll shop Brown to the either the Lions, fpackers or Vikings, and keep Poolguy and Melton the magician. I can see Omiyale at LG at this rate. All of the trade material we have and AB could be gone ? $%#@!

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    DA FUCK!!!

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Lovie's an idiot. Plain and simple. Although the extreme hatred/vitriol has inevitably died down after the Bears did the illogical/inexplicable and fired nearly everybody but the head buffoon, we can't forget how bad this head coach actually is. And I'm unfortunately with whoever lamented that no matter what neat pieces are put in place this year, we still have Clueless in Big Sandy running the freak show.

I don't know who can argue that it's a good idea not having Hester on kick returns. Someone run the numbers, I bet his kick returns TDs are at least close to his punt returns. I like the head of steam concept and the no decision concept, and while I too am pulling for improvement as WR under Martz, how many years are we going to waste on this experiment? It was a bad decision in the beginning (which I among others was loudly against), and it has panned out just the way many predicted - you lost at both positions. To me, sheer idiocy, now apparently prolonged.

The Alex Brown deal, don't think that's a good move, but I maybe understand it - they're still looking at ways of rounding up some picks. Alex was our best rusher, although his career is about halfway in between that apt description of Wale's career and a HoF'er. I actually love the move of Izzy - I think that guy is one of the most underrated, hardest working and most overachieving guys we have on the squad - but that still doesn't mean it's going to work - it's an experiment. And Mark Anderson had a good season last year Lovie? According to who? Your balsa wood brain? Never mind no sacks, he has been absolutely terrible against the run (although he did improve towards the end of the season), the guy's just not very good. So your new plan is JP plus experiments/failed experiments on the other side? Sounds pretty iffy to me.

And Lovie should just shut the hell up - what's that quote - better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt - well Lovie it's way too late for that, you have long since removed all doubt. Exhibit # 2,043,314 - your babbling comments on Greg Olsen. Why are you even talking? Why????

  • In reply to PhilfromSATX:

Listening to Lovie in March is just going to drive you nuts, just try to ignore the man. Just pay attention the the personnel moves.

That being said, the personnel move in place to get rid of Alex Brown is literally making me sick to my stomach. AB is without a doubt one of my favorite players, not only because of his passion and performance on the field, but also because of his personality and demeanor off the field. This is ridiculous. The team needs MORE players like AB. So frustrating... The only way I can possibly reconcile this move is if it lands the Bears a solid veteran safety. But then again, the reason the Bears have a gaping hole back there in the first place is because they dumped another leader on and off the field in Mike Brown. I just don't see how this improves the team unless it lands the Bears a more than solid O-Lineman or Saftey... Good luck stopping the run now Hot Rod.... AHhHH!! We'll miss you Alex, best of luck wherever you end up... Still in shock.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

    Al-

Ive heard several ideas regarding the overtime, including the one you wrote above. Just to play devil's advocate, the response on heard in relation to the "fifth quarter" concept was essentially this:

You would lose all sense of urgency at the end of games. Why would a team try to win the game, if they know they will just end up with the ball where it stands. It would also kill the 2 minute drill concept.

One other idea in relation to the overtime changes, was to have two coin flips at the beginning of the game. This way, you know who stands to receive in overtime before it starts, and this MAY change your approach to the end of the game.

  • In reply to Dmband:

They still need to gain first downs. The urgency to gain yardage still exists. I think it makes the chess game that much more convoluted. If they are inside the 20, it certainly behooves the defense to try to sack the QB or tackle people for a loss. It also makes the rest of the game that much more urgent.

  • I'm all out of bullshit and sunshine for that guy Doc.

For anyone else who wants to believe in complex strateegery perpetrated by lovie I wish you luck

  • Tombstone...Ike Clanton

  • Definitely a well behaved little boy, Doc. Maybe that was the problem.

Do you think Rex is a virgin ? He always seemed like a virgin to me. He did not have the demeanour or swagger of a man who like to tickle tummy buttons from the inside. He was more 'Stable Kenny' than Kenny Stabler.

Maybe that's why he sucked so much ...

  • Flag - False start and illegal procedure.

Can't assign yourself points (or demerits for that matter) Doc.

    You should know that, you

  • Okay, I did my own research. According to the all-knowing Wiki, Devin has 4 TDs on 94 kickoff return attempts and 7 TDS on 121 punt return attempts (through 2008). However, those numbers don't include the returned FG, which I would argue was much more like a kickoff return than a punt return (starting in end zone). Counting that one, he scored 5.3% of the time on KO's and 5.8% of the time on punt returns. You can argue that that greatly favors the punts since there are plenty of punts out of bounds and fair catches. However, I did not include 2009 stats which would have added a bunch of punt returns and ZERO returns for TDs, so that probably balances out. He WAS as good on kickoff returns as he was on punt returns. Against a good punter, he has far less time to make his moves on a punt than he does on a kickoff, and his blockers have less of an ability to set up blocks. To me it's a no-brainer, especially since he wasn't able to hit the home run on the punts last year. Why not try?

I happen to love the new OT rule, and hope that they'll extend it to regular season games next year. I think that makes it almost completely fair - if you can't stop the team that wins the coin toss and hold them from a TD, you don't deserve to win. Conversely, the team that wins the coin toss and simply moves the ball 20 or so yards and then has the good kicker to hit the field goal, they don't deserve to win based on that. I think this is better than a whole added quarter - the sudden death aspect of it (which I would argue is exciting) is still maintained, without the unfairness of win coin toss + 20 yards = win game by 3.

Just wondering, has Vasher landed anywhere yet?

For anyone who cares, I apologize for being AWOL for so long. My life has gotten insanely busy (good busy, but busy nonetheless). I still wear all my Bears gear everywhere (probably need to replace my Bears crocs, they're losing their sponginess), still representing the Orange and Blue down here in the Lone Star State. Can't wait for the end of the disastrous Lovie regime (okay 2006 was pretty good, but TOO LONG GONE).

Thanks to all for providing great entertainment to read! Irish and MB and Albert and Lobo and Doc and Johnny have kind of taken over now, and deservedly so! You guys carry the torch well! Hope to be able to come in more often, I'll work at it!

  • In reply to PhilfromSATX:

Does anyone else remember the Devin four-step "spin move" of last year? The guy ran in a damn circle...

I get nervous everytime a punt heads his way, and not for the other team. Whoever mentioned the benefits of no decision making on KR gets +1000000. The guy has the IQ of my left nut, without the testosterone.

He's scared to get hit. He can't decide when to let the ball bounce out of bounds. Calls fair catches with 15 yards of free space. Overall shit show nearly everytime.

If you run backwards, you don't deserve to return punts.

    Get this guy returning kick-offs.

Oh, and no to Alex, but yes to Greg? Lovie, go play with #16 and maybe you can catch an overdose.

Just when you start to think you can be optimistic again, they pull another move that's not only stupid, but doesn't even seem to have a purpose. Why get rid of Brown? Why move the only consistent (notice the lack of superlatives) tackle you've got to end and dump the reliable one you've already got?

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Hmmmm... wonder if this was perhaps the result of a negotiation when they were mulling over the JP move - maybe they said the only way they'd do the big bucks is if they didn't have to spend it on AB - of course $5MM/year doesn't sound like that much, but according to 2009 figures, Izzy makes a salary of $1.75MM and Anderson just over $1MM, Gilbert $310M. Maybe the queen bee said fine, I'll pay the Peppers money but you've got to save bucks on the other side. And our fine judges of personnel said, NO PROBLEM BOSS LADY, Izzy plus Anderson plus Gilbert equals 1 Alex Brown and we'll save you $5.5MM between this year and next.

Just a hypothesis. The timing is also interesting - the same site I used for these salaries (http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/teamdetail.aspx?year=2009&team=5&order=Salary+desc)

shows that AB made $750M this year, he's obviously running off an old deal and the new deal starts up this coming year, $5MM for 2010 and $5.5MM for 2011.

In my opinion those dollars are a bargain for him but maybe not to them...

Thank god he wasnt within my reach, or I would be behind bars again! My disability and Chronic pain are not a laughing matter. Maybe giving him some Chronic pain of his own, will give him a different perspective on life & teach some respect. I go out of my way to be nice, I love Bear fans. But when I am confronted by these pathetic pansy Losers that like to attack other bloggers, I go Bi-Polar, I have Bi-Polar issues as it is. • In reply to ImissButkus:

Good luck Wale. You didn't live up to the hype coming from Miami, but you were a solid player and leader on and off the field.

AB is also one of my favorite players on and off the tundra. I think he tied Briggs for having the most passion and desire to win last year. Dude hates losing, you can see it on his face, and I love guys like that. The only upside is it could mean Melton or Gilbert are ready to contribute. I'm ready to see what pool boy and Melton have. I just hope this move isn't driven by Marinelli's boner for Anderson. Marinelli and Lovie think they can mold the kid back to his rookie form and both said they saw a lot of improvement last year. Really? How? Where? From what I saw, da kid couldn't shed tackles and took the worst angles to the QB that I've ever seen.

This move also seems to be based on Lovie's idea of moving Izzy Idon to D end permanently. I love Izzy's athleticism and versatility, I just don't know if Izzy is quick enough or can learn all the swim and power moves that ends use before the season starts. But, if he works at end, imagine Izzy on one end and Peppers on the other.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

    mikebdot-

I think the problem with that theory is that it would fundamentally change the game....I dont think they wanted to change the game. Just improve the OT, IF a game goes to overtime.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

If there going to change the OT rules, they better amend them before the season to implement them in the regular season as well. It would be too confusing and lead to inconsistent and unfair results if these rules only apply when playoff time comes. If their going to change it, it should be uniform in the regular season so that teams can learn the new rules, get familiar with them and strategize around them by the time playoffs arrive. It would be a shame if these gimmicky rules only apply in the post-season.

He was running for a contract but now if he goes balls out on a kickoff or punt and gets worked the current NFL contract structure is not there to protect him. he only has his guaranteed money to fall back on if does a Frank Mir on his leg and can't play again. I have to believe that the mental aspect has something to do with it. Also, the 4 step spin around worked great against Duke.

I've got the worst cold I've ever had, too much noise on here.

  • In reply to Dmband:

and +100000? I finally have enough points MB!

    Carcinogens here I come!

  • In reply to Dmband:

DM, as I told doc above, unfortunately you can't administer points to yourself. They have to be officially sanctioned and dispensed by another blog-brother.

That being said, and due to your obvious affinity for carcinogens... 500 points for the effort!

    You're almost there DM.

  • I will make this rant short and sweet:

How do you get rid of guys without having suitable replacements ready to step in?

    1. Get rid of Mike Brown and substitute...Bullocks,Steltz,Payne? Are you fucking kidding me? Brown wasn't in his prime but he was finally healthy after not ending the season with some sort of major rehab ahead of him.
    2. Get rid of Alex Brown and substitute...Mark fucking Anderson? Izzie? Izzie is a project and i want him to do well but AB was our captain last year and one of the only consistent performers.
    3. Roach over Williams? If I were Williams I would be utterly depressed about how my career has played out. Our coaching staff has totally wasted at least 3 years of this guys career.
    4. Hester off of returns? He was only on pace to be the best returner in the history of football. i'm think i'm getting light headed.
    5. Bubble screens to 2 of the fastest fucking receivers in the league in Hester and Knox? Don't know how to coach? Then just fake it and watch a goddamn Eagles game on how to use those two guys.
    6. Only rolling Cutler out of the pocket in the last 2 games of the season and not utilizing his mobility during the early part of the year? A 4th grader playing Madden could figure that out by looking at Cutler's speed rating.
    7. Manning is still being considered as a defensive option? Have the coaches been watching our game films during the week or am i just in the fucking twilight zone? Manning has no defensive instincts...oh my god i just took a percoset and bought a bottle of Jameson.
    8. Josh Bullocks was tendered an offer instead of tenderly being told that he sucks? Meanwhile we ignore Atogwe, Sharper, Rolle, Harper, my 4 year old niece, my old ass neighbor who has macular degeneration brought on by a lack of leafy green vegetables in his diet, Doug Plank, Chuck Cecil and #16. I am so drunk right now...life not worth living...need Safety...go get him bears...heart failing..see bright light..grandma? left arm hurts...just pressed my life alert...help

    50 points

  • yo i'm at a lost at this shit. honestly....can't even think of a response. really want to kill the managers of this team.

  • Moving AB is a very STUPID FUCKING MOVE. We are not deep at DE. Just because you signed Peppers doesn't mean you can rely on players that haven't played and/or have played poorly recently to shore up the other end spot. Alex Brown is a consummate professional and one of the leaders that always faces the music when other players won't. He is more of a leader than Urlacher by far. I hope this doesn't go through. I think he could have a strong year opposite Peppers. Again, this better not be due to Marinelli's hard-on for Anderson. Nelli was supposed to have last year to bring #97 back to life. Didn't happen, and I don't know why it would this year. Can someone please explain how Lovie and Marinelli both were impressed with Anedrson's play last year and saw great improvements? Again, he can't shed a tackle and takes the worst and longest routes to the QB. Offensive linemen have learned that if you can get a hand on him, he's not gonna get pressure.

  • the only thing i was laughing at was that he was partying like Corey Haim the last time i saw him posting. i'm giggling just thinking about it. i love his enthusiasm for the Bearssssssssssss but i also love laughing my ass off at work so i have to try to balance those 2 items.

  • Hmmm, who do you think the "veteran QB" might be?

Did Bulger play for Martz? Who else is a QB that played for Martz that actually liked him?

  • karma is a beeeyotch and once they let Brown go, Izzie or Mark "i have no idea what the word 'contain' means" Anderson will get hurt and we will be screwed. You don't get rid of players that produce and that represent everything that true fans respect. Now, if they are freeing up cap room for a veteran safety that would ask for roughly 5 million (Atogwe) or another veteran safety costing about 2 million (Sharper)and a guard, does that change things?

  • +1

And if we're dumping Cindy Crawford we'd better be getting a young Bo Derek in return. Audi.

  • Hey BAM, thanks for the props Brother, I do appreciate it. Great fans like you make me want to come back, where these Trolls make me want to Combat!!
