Bears Poised to Sign Peppers

From the "Too Good to Be True" department comes news that Julius Peppers' agent has proclaimed a Bears' deal with his Pepper something of a foregone conclusion.

Jerry Angelo has a history of getting the guy he wants right at the start of free agency and it seems Peppers will be no exception.  We may have an announcement as early as the morning.

  • FQD..happy pre-bday..Bears may have given you and the rest of us the best gift..a reason for hope for this year..lightning may strike twice in Halas Hall...JC once JP twice..Sharper thrice?? I know the last is a dream..maybe????

  • preciate the love lobo

RT @LanceZierlein: It's a wrap. The Bears will get Peppers officially tomorrow. Good people in the front office over there. I'm happy for them.

what "good people in the front office" are they talking about? lmao these ppl are off the chain.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Happy B-Day FQD. I know it's tomorrow but let's stock the cupboard today! Hope it's a great day for ya. I can't drink (16+ years without) so have one for me. I always tell people I'm allergic to alcohol. When I drink it I break out in handcuffs! It would be a lot funnier if there wasn't some truth to it. Have a great one!!!!!

    Go Bears!

  • I'm not sure about all of this..almost dreamlike..is this real? Are JA & LDL realizing THIS IS IT or OUT!? could this be the run for the SB..?? am I dreaming of Sugar Plum Fairies in my head....
I think I'm out and I hope to wake up and have this all not a dream..... a reality!!!!!!!!
    BEAR DOWN!!!!!

  • wow. starting front 7: Peppers, Adams, Harris, Brown, Briggs, Urlacher, Pisa (roach/williams/HH). Easy 4-6 pro bowl types. I am stoked. Who do you double team on that D-line?

    Now about that secondary...
I have to think we will ink a 2nd tier FS later on this month. Rolle wants 8mil/year... he's just not worth it. I'm ok with Peanut, Bowman and Payne/Lava at SS. Still really need a FS tho.

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

Best front seven in Football. Who needs a free safety ?

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Irish..I think we still need a ballhawk GET SHARPER!!!

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

This is ALMOST too good to be true. Look at a potential roster for this season:

    QB Cutler
    RB Forte, Taylor
    TE Clark, Manumaleuna, Olsen, Davis
    WR Aromashadu, Hester, Bennett, Knox
    LT Williams
    LG Omiyale (sigh)
    C Kreutz
    RG Garza
    RT Shaffer
    DT Harris, someone else
    DE Brown, Peppers, Anderson
LB Urlacher, Briggs, Pisa, Roach, Williams, Hillenmeyer
    CB Peanut, Bowman
    FS Sharper
    SS Someone better than Afalava
    K Good as Gould
    P Maynard

    Damn.

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

Ghost, I'm dissapointed. You didn't put Olsen(the key to our succes) on your list. BAAHAAAA.

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

    Time to be realistic.

Peppers at RE with Brown at LE means Anderson probably stays, Wale is long gone. We still need to move Olsen for a 2nd rounder, a high one - so we can get a OL in the draft. Martz doesn't want him.

I don't know what we look like after that cap wise, we need to cut Vasher and Rashied Davis and Dez Clark can stay since Olsen is gone and be the 2nd string.

We still need a safety. They want to keep Kreutz although I was in favor of cutting his salary. We need to cut more fat, more salary has to go to make way for a top flight safety.

  • In reply to gpldan:

With you there all the way Gpl. Olsen is all we have for bait. I'd be all for a shore-up job for a season like Sharper or Atogwe (who is free I believe) and then draft a stud in the first round next year. Dez can still help us bigtime, and welcome onboard Manu. But we should be trying to turn Olsen into a first round pick somehow and give it to the Broncos for Marshall. If we had Chester Taylor, Marshall and Peppers ...

Thanks for the read Z. Ginnys going to be sore after JA gets off of her. Damn guy must be hung like a horse.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

trac......It's not the size it's all about the ride!!! lol

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

wow.. so 70% of fans agree that the Bears 2 biggest needs are FS and DE so the Bears come out of the gate with signing a 4th TE, who is a big blocker; I thought we just cut this guy but his name was Micheal Gaines. And coming in to sign is... a RB yay... WTF. Peppers, Sharper then the fluff. We needed anoter TE almost as bad as we need another fn kick returner, Cribbs is due to visit later today I bet.

F it, I guess as long as they get Peppers inked and grab a FS who is pretty decent I won't care about the order but if JP doesn't come here this is going to look pretty stupid.

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

We'll still be weak at the SS and CB spots. A quick release passing game will still hurt us if we can't shore it up. We'll be facing some good offensive lines this season and if we can't get pressure early, real early, I'll be nervous.

  • In reply to Reichwolff:

well, you can't expect a pro-bowler at every position - even the vikings who sent like 9 guys to the Pro-bowl, made a good post-season run, and had a high ranked Defense; have 2 pretty weak LBs, a weak corner, and a weak safety. Just that Jared Allen and the Williams wall make up for a lot of that. I think Bowman will be better after a year in the seat and I have 0 issues with Peanut. Maybe Manning to SS makes sense, I'm sure he can cover TEs and RBs and maybe they will blitz him a lot, he seems decent at that. Oh, yah we run the cover 2.. nm.

  • In reply to Reichwolff:

Hasn't really sunk into the collective Bear consciousness - but it was said at the combine loud and clear by Lovie - Danieal Manning is the Bear's Strong Safety. No competition. He's it.

  • In reply to Reichwolff:

Olsen will be gone in a trade. Writing is on the wall.

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

Ghost..That sigh for me is Pissed DISAPOINTMENT!!! We need to look at the Guards...Damn we need to protect JC!

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

    Julius Peppers = Alfonso Soriano

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

If the Bears can land Peppers, what does that mean for Tommie Harris? How can teams double-team two guys lining up next to each other? We could be talking about the number of sacks per quarter instead of per game. I

  • In reply to GoBears:

The difference is that both Tommie and Peppers are lazy money grabbers, not genuine football for football's sake guys like the 85 defense. I don't mean dig into a contrarian view here but I really don't think adding Peppers does anything but tie our hands. That money will be much better spent on offense. That side of the ball is much closer to being great than the defense.

  • In reply to GoBears:

    Gents!

Wow, lots to catch up on. Just got back from a little biz trip. Neither Max nor Jeff's douchebaggery could ever keep me away from hanging with youz guyz (the real reason I'm here).

Anyway, first day bombs away huh? Pretty interesting stuff, and finally some real fodder to keep us busy (and excited).

GB, here's the word from Tommie: http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/03/healthy-harris-urlacher-bullish-on-bears-hopes.html. Makes me feel a bit better, but it is butter, so we'll just have to wait and see what really happens next year.

    About all this movement, it

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    MB..WWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSUUUUUUUUUPP!
agree on the O-Line I have been screaming this ALL DAY LONG!!! that's why I took a break from the blog..I had nothing more to say..hard to beleive yeah I know...lol...

we need BEAST'S at guard two of them NOW!!! JC on his back side doesn't make INT's and scores any better than this year

    PLUS GET SHARPER!!!!!

  • In reply to nicholsra:

    Lobo.... my man. Sup.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I have to admit...I am a little set back with the moves...those who said that LDL & Ja's... "Our wall is against the back" ...lol Butter!

may be right...I just will wait to the ink is dry...I did think they had pressure but didn't think they had the conjones to pull the trigger.

DAMN BEAR DOWN GENTS!!!!! and ladies if any

  • In reply to nicholsra:

So Olsen being dealt is now a foregone conclusion...hopefully we get AT LEAST 2 picks...

  • In reply to Dmband:

With you Dm... we need a nice ransom for him since he's the only trade bait we can afford to utilize.

Besides, he was begging for it at the end. Wonder how Jay is feeling right now. Hopefully this will force him to improve his field vision, to look for check downs when necessary, and to throw to the open man now - which was really my main beef with the Jay/Olsen love affair.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Apparently Manumeleuna (yeah i butchered it) will essentially be our 3rd tackle. The guy is built like a lineman and blocks like one too, should do wonders for this line. The interior could use some work though - Bobby Williams from the bengals and Stephan Neal from the Pats are still both available, I believe.

    Aromashodu

    Tinoisamoa

    Manumaleuna

If only the Bears had re-signed Ayanbadejo...

  • In reply to Shady:

Shady, I get that he's a neck (I saw a lot of him in SD, and he's a beast), but a TE does not a guard (or two) make. We need interior linemen that can pass block and open running lanes man. We all saw what happened when our line couldn't run block, and without a running game to keep everyone honest, Jay will be on the run again.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

At 6'2 295lbs this guy can move people out of the way and is regarded as one of the better blockers in the NFL. He's a dump truck.

  • In reply to Shady:

Olsen's not going anywhere. Dez is the odd man out.

    He has old balls.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

But strong old balls coach. I will be really upset if they deal Dez. We need to keep him no matter what. We've seen what happens when you just cast aside vets with super strong leadership qualities for no reason. Bad move.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Jake Delhomme becomes the first casualty of an uncapped year.
Carolina sends him packing because they don't have to worry about taking a nasty "cap hit" on the $12 million he was would have been due.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

I feel your pain, MB. I am not at all anxious to see Desmond Clark as the odd man out at tight end.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

    mother of god

...I see a lot of Bears' Peppers jerseys being sold if this happens

...no matter what his faults, he can only improve this horrible all-time worst Bears' defense

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

I always liked Dez, hilarious lazy eye and all, but his skills diminished last year and he was hurt. I don't see him contributing much to the 2010 Bears.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

    You're breaking my heart coach.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Not sure trading Olsen is a foregone conclusion. No problem with the Manny signing. Davis and Clark could be cut just as easily as Olsen getting traded. Happy the front office is feeling the heat.

    Go Bears!

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

MB, damn good to have you back my man. What a difference a day makes huh? Can't wait to see who we have on the Roster when the dust settles.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Thanks Trac, damn glad to be back. Yep, let's see how all the conjecture and rumor shakes out. We've been fooled plenty of times before.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Dez Clark just got his roster bonus today...if they were going to cut him, they would have done it prior to paying him that 400K I believe...

  • In reply to Dmband:

    EXACTLY.

  • In reply to Dmband:

I don't think Tommie is going anywhere. Who the hell else is there at DT?

Harris, Urlacher, Cutler, Forte, Williams, Aromashadu, and Peppers are integral to this teams' success in the upcoming years. Those are the bastion players of the Chicago Bears. Without all of them succeeding we cannot hope to win, with them all clicking together we cannot fail.

  • In reply to Dmband:

I also read Dez got his roster bonus.

Olsen's agent Rosenhaus already filed the papers - he's so obviously on the block. Gone now gone, my son will need a new Bears jersey this fall.

  • In reply to Dmband:

The due date was today. I'd guess Kellen Davis is the odd man out. I think we can all agree Martz is smarter than Turner. Martz will figure out a way to take advantage of Olsen's size/speed.

    Go Bears!

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

You'd be wrong. Davis is a horse, exactly the kind of guy Martz likes. He just needs to work on being a better run blocker.

  • In reply to Dmband:

Tommie Harris is due $5 Mill soon.

  • In reply to Dmband:

the thought of actually getting Peppers made me cringe because of the money. But then i realized...it's not my fucking money. I wanted Kampman and 3 others for the same price but if we get Peppers i will black out at my desk.

I said long ago that getting Cutler was a sign that there was no turning back. This would be another huge indication that the Bears have turned a corner in terms of what we expect our team to do on a yearly basis. I'm speechless right now...if he signs on the line that is dotted.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

I agree with da coach. I think Olsen stays and Dez is the odd man out. Its too bad, he was a leader and consummate professional, but his skills seemed to decline a bit last year. By the end of today, we should have Peppers and Taylor. We can't afford Rolle if we get these two, but we could afford OJ Atogwe. I don't care if he was on the Rams, da kid can play. I like that Lovie got his limp dick on a plane so he could personally meet the Neo-Freak and his agent the first minute of free agency. I still can't believe the McCaskeys are going to let Jerry spend like a madman. They either really believe in Jerry/Lovie or Jerry is a smooth mothafucking talker. Good to see you're still around MB. Don't sweat the small shit. You got da passion and da knowledge and keep it coming.

  • In reply to crowntheirass:

Thanks Crown. Likewise my man. Hopefully now that shit's heating up we'll see you more regularly.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

    Guys

Come on youre better than this! Lol..

Olsen will be dealt. We can get two picks for him (hopefully) and he already submitted a request to be traded with his agent...Drew Douchenhouse.

Listen, I like Olsen, but we need picks...and its been clear from day one that Martz doesnt want a "non blocking" tight end. And again, it makes no sense that they would pay Dez a 475K roster bonus if they intended on cutting him...they would have released him prior..

    Just my humble opinion..

  • In reply to Dmband:

You're right, Dez isn't going anywhere.

I don't see how the Bears get anything more than a 3rd from trading Olsen, and I don't see how losing anyone, especially one of your better receivers, would be a good move - even if he's asking for a trade.

    Is Olsen/Martz the new Cutler/McDaniels?

  • In reply to Dmband:

Where did you hear that Dez got the roster bonus today DMB? I saw that it is due today, but did he get paid out?? The reason I'm hesitant to trade Olsen for picks is due to Jerry's sub-par drafting record. In Martz's systems in the past, he has used both a blocking/guard type TE and a possession (non-blocking) TE.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Sadly, I think you're right coach. As they have brought in the blockers, if they're keeping a receiving TE then Angelo obviously protects his prize pick and Uni hag. Dez gets lost to economics. He becomes surplus to requirements regardless of having been the most consistent Bear in a long time (other than Robbie).

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Ryan Clark. yes.

  • In reply to GoBears:

And Shaun Rogers is available, f#4K it, sign him ! Block Tommie, Rogers, Peppers and Brown with six guys if you can. Jamar Williams, Lac and Briggs behind them. Damn ...

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

They haven't signed anyone yet. Let's hold our horses. And no matter how good it gets we shouldn't have been in this position in the first place. Imagine we'd scraped into the playoffs, we wouldn't even be talking to anybody because of the restrictions of being in the last 8.

Looks like Marshall could be a Jet, damn.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Irish ..let's hope LDL serves the Steak jjjuuusssttt right. But JA you have to make sure it comes with the right trimin's!!!!Get it done JA

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

Peppers turns up for his 'steak dinner' off Lovie, says 'Ta very much.' and then he's off to Washington to sign for the real money ?

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

Talk about "spicing things up" by adding a some PEPPERs !!!

Per Adam Schefter on 4 letter radio about 10 minutes ago:
Peppers will be in Chicago to get the deal done, today.

Schefter also says Chester Taylor and Brandon Manumaleuna are in the Bears crosshairs as well and that, sans a #1 or #2 pick this year, the Bears will "make a splash" in free agency.

I believe that for Mr Angelo this would signal some thing akin to

"IF I am going out, I am going out with guns blazing".

While this doesn't surprise me QUITE as much as acquiring Cutler last April, it's definitely in the same zip code.

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

Wow! I thought I was going to wake up and find out the Bears had landed Rolle, dropped out of the Peppers sweepstakes, and maybe added Manumaleuna.

Good developments, no doubt. Rolle might be the highest paid safety in the league...even though that is still a need position, he ain't worth that damn much. I'd rather over pay for Peppers.

Should be an interesting day. I'm not gonna get shit done at work!

  • In reply to BearDown1982:

BD1982..I hope we go after sharper!

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

I wonder if this whole thing is going to shake a playoff sport out of the tree. Lovies situation isnt that different from Tom Kaufmans when the Giants almost canned him. Playoffs, did someone say playoffs?

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

Brandon Manumaleuna signed. http://tinyurl.com/y8fvm88 Now move Greg Olsen to WR and DO NOT cut Desmond Clark. Please. Don't.

  • In reply to DrinkBurpRepeat:

    agreed on not cutting Clark

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

Brandon Manumaleuna looks done pending a physical today. 5 year deal.

    http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/03/bears-sign-blocking-tight-end-manumaleuna.html

  • In reply to mikemuadib:

And Rolle should not be the highest paid Safety in the NFL. Hard to knock them for not paying him $8 mill per.

  • In reply to mikemuadib:

    GET SOME!!!

  • Crap, didn't see him hiding there between Manumaleuna and Davis.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

That's because Manu and Davis are quite large.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Love the Chester Taylor idea... remember that Afalava was a rookie last year Ghost. Not a lot of rookies are impact players. He was in position more than a lot of other safeties we've had over the years. He got beat a couple times, but the man can tackle. I hope he stays and gets better. Remember getting rid of Chris Harris for a 6th rd draft pick to Carolina? I don't want to see the same situation repeated.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

I have a navy blue and burnt orange erection.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Mustache.. I just woke up from mine...and I still want more!!!

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Nate Burleson is now a Detroit Lion, BaMFortySixBlitz.
He was officially the first signing of the 2010 FA season.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Thanks for not posting a pic, 'Stache.

    Go Bears!

  • We're not BYU just yet Max. I believe that Abandejo and Arosh are African (Nigerian) names. But the islanders sure as hell are built to play ball and welcome them in.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

sorry, message got cut off. Anyway, you get the gist.

  • Olsen might be traded...but I don't think so. The Bears specifically stated the other day that he was NOT on the trading block, however, that does not mean they won't listen to a team who might want to trade.

With the Martz system in place, I could see them going with four Tight Ends. Someone is the odd man out, my bet would NOT be Clark. He is the best blocking TE the Bears have had in recent years and has been a very solid perfomer since he was signed.

  • Gracias Joe.

  • It's a journalistic trick Ghost. Haven't you learned anything from almighty Jeff? Just joking.

  • CTA-

It heard it on the radio this morning....

regarding the picks...dont worry as long as the picks are not in the 1st round we should be Ok!!!!!

    Thats sad and true.

  • Its my understanding that the roster bonus is paid if you are a member of that team on the day its due..I dont know if there is a cutoff time?

I could be completely wrong about that by the way...

  • In reply to Dmband:

My understanding is that if you pay a guy a roster bonus and then cut him, you're an idot.

I'm thinking Tommie might get cut before his bonus this spring/summer. Although I'm not sure Lovie would be down with that kind of move.

  • In reply to Shady:

my understanding is that Jerry Angelo is an idiot

  • In reply to MB30SD:

He is if he lets Peppers leave Chicago without inking a contact first.

  • In reply to Shady:

    He's already an idiot Shady.

No number of blockbuster deals can take that away from him now.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    from PFT:
Julius Peppers is a Chicago Bear
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 5, 2010 3:13 PM ET
The deal is done, and the biggest free agent of the 2010 off-season is going to Chicago: Julius Peppers is a Bear.

Although the team hasn't formally announced it yet, ESPN reports that a six-year deal is done. Adam Schefter reported that the Bears are expected to pay Peppers $40 million in the first three years.

The Bears will be expecting big things from Peppers, who has 81 sacks in his NFL career, which began in 2002. That's the third-most in the NFL during that time, behind only Jason Taylor and Dwight Freeney.

For the Bears (who also signed Brandon Manumaleuna and Chester Taylor on a huge first day of free agency), it's a sign that they're serious about winning, and winning now. After the disaster that was the Bears' 2009 season, that's a sign the fans of Chicago needed to see.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I am impressed with the Aggressiveness by the Bears in pursuing Peppers, apparently Lovie was at his door at the start of free agency, impressive. They already extended an offer to Rolle yesterday as well. Manamuela(whatever) is signed for 5 years and will be a tremendous blocker for Cutler, he is built like a Tackle. I heard Chester Taylor is pretty much a done deal to sign for 4 years at 12.5 mil with 7 mil guaranteed in the 1st year. Forte and Taylor should form a strong 1-2 punch & their blocking & receiving skills are superior, good move. Plus it screws the Vikes,ha,ha! I hear alot of people clamoring for help on the o-line, but I wouldnt panic yet, we are only less than 24 hours into free agency? The Bears can only do so much that quickly. But they are focusing on the top players first, which is encouraging. Plus I cant fault their aggressiveness, the Bears are definitely going after it!! I see Chester Taylor & Peppers as a lock, the Bears will nail them down. I think Rolle will just price himself out of contention. I see probably Atogwe or Ryan Clark as possible free agent signings at free safety. I wouldnt mind Sharper, but word is he is seeking too much $$. I would hate to see Dez Clark go,he is very reliable for us and does it all well,"Still" at least let him play out this last year of his contract. He got hurt last year big deal, he has a healthy track record other than that. I have heard the Bears say they plan to use Olsen this year, so I dont know what to think, he seems tradeable which could net a 2nd rd pick to use on the o-line, just sayin. I am neutral on that, if Olsen can flourish for us than I am all for it. They cant let Peppers leave without a contract though, or he wont be back. Chester Taylor seems eager to play here. On the Vikes site they said they offered him a deal, but he couldnt wait to book a trip to Chicago just hours after free agency began. GO BEARS!!!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

three letter network...DONE DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy Shiete!! JA now go get us some guards!!! and sharper if possible!!!

    Who are we!!!!!!!!!!????????

THE DAMN CHICAGO FU@!$#!@$ING BEARS!!! That's who we are!!!

as coach said earlier...I HAVE A NAVY BLUE AND BURNT ORANGE ERECTION and it has lasted longer than four hours...should I call a doctor?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'm shocked (in a good way) that we got so much shit done. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-bears-freeagency&prov=ap&type=lgns

Let's get that safetty and a couple guards now please. Oh, and trade Olsen and get us a real #1 WR somehow please.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

BTW, the lions are going to be MUCH improved next year. We better damn well step up, I would not be able to stomach being behind the lions in the NFCN. Jebus, can you imagine that shit?

  • In reply to Shady:

Irish, you going to sleep while all the madness goes on? Wake up tomorrow and see what father Xmas brought us?

...Or is it going to be a Guinness and whiskey night?

  • Roster bonuses are paid only if a player is still on the active roster of a team on a specific future date. Most NFL roster bonuses have trigger dates of either March 1 or June 1. I don't know what date the Bears use.
