Here's the recipe for salvaging the season:
1. Tonight
I don't blame Cutler for this. It's all coaching. He can't get a clean snap from Kreutz, he's trying to gut it out and stand in the pocket, he's not getting good protection, and his WRs are dropping off routes and falling down.
The irony is, the guy who only made one catch: Aroma-Shabba-Dabba-Doo, he looks like the only legit WR that the Bears have. He should be starting ahead of Bennett. Bennett is a upgrade in the slot over ol' slippery hands #81.
Shabba-Doo, Knox and Hester can be made into a receiving core, but Hester needs to come off punts again. He needs to focus.
The OL? Shit, that guy who replaced Pace on the left side did a MUCH better job blocking than Pace did. Please dear god go out and look for a late signing at LG. Beekman is just as bad as FrankO.
Garza and Williams are ok on the right. Kreutz can, if nothing else, pull on the screen as well as any center. More screens.
This loss belongs pretty much on the head of Wrong Turner. I don't know what more proof a person needs. The ridiculous use of Hester on the WR screens, the fact nobody is fooled by Hester in anything he does - the fact that we can't throw downfield to our WRs when we need to, the lousy receiver coaching we have.
Forte needs to get spelled with a bruiser. Period. We REALLY miss Kevin Jones out there. Forte is a finesse back, and a great screen and pass catching back. He's a poor excuse for a bruiser. Go get Larry Johnson or something. I don't know, it hurts to have to go to AP, which gets you nothing. AP is a special teamer only, he's not doing shit.
Cut Wolfe, he's hurt, go get a RB. I don't care if we fish Ron Dayne out of retirement, get some butter ball that makes LBs hurt.
And get the "other" Devin involved. He has hands, he can run, he's big. Use him.
The rest of this season is about who wants to stay a Chicago Bear. That's how it needs to be approached. The list of safe players are:
Hester
Cutler
Forte
Olsen
Clark
Garza
C. Williams
McKie
Knox
Everyone else is playing for their careers out there.
On D, safe is:
Briggs
Adams
Gaines Adams, cause we paid for him
Roach
Peanut
Zack B
Manning
Everyone else is playing for their careers as Bears, including Butter Harris.
It's time to just become a wacky shotgun only type team and see what happens. This season is a write off.
I think you can even throw in Manning as well, gets man handled when he tries to tackle
At least I came out of the season with a nifty Da Bears Blog t-shirt.
My Cutler jersey may not make it to the end of the year. I'm not ready to burn it yet, but if they handed out jerseys to Offensive Coordinators, it'd be on the fire pit right now.
We can lose one more and still make the playoffs. The defense turned up ready to play as expected, thanks to Vernon Davis. Tommie showed up and controlled the point. Corners played nice man/press, some nice Cover-3 to contain Gore. Clean tackling. Swarming to the ball. Not too shabby at all. If we could bring that defense to every game then we're in with a shout.
I want to throw Chris Williams down a lift shaft. Devin Hester needs to go away and have think about his blocking. When they tell you to put your man on his ass, they don't mean 'by any means necessary'. Ron Turners play-calling was atrocious. More of those very effective mid-screens to Forte would have been nice. Well done to Lovie for turning the D around, but my God, Ron Turner needs to be shot ...
Dear Santa, Thanks very much for coming early this year and giving us Jay (although he had the colic tonight) - any chance of a fucking wide receiver ?
I know the horrible O-line and complete lack of a running game and Wrong Turner and receivers dropping routes and the alignment of the planets all contributed this season, but we might as well dub our quarterback REX CUTLER after games like this. The ESPN recap article said that Cutler has 9 red zone interceptions over the last two seasons, more than TWICE any other QB.
Cutler is kinda like Opposite-Orton.
1.He's awesome at everything Kyle was bad at but...
2.He's horrible at everything Kyle was good at
(not turning the ball over, throwing the ball away if necessary, not to mention being just plain LUCKY)
(I didn't watch this game. I followed ESPN Gamecast and fell asleep by halftime.)
Of course, if we had anywhere close to a decent running game, Jay wouldn't have to throw the ball FIFTY TIMES A GAME.
They can put 8 and 9 men in the box every down and blitz and force Cutler to beat them deep or with screens. That is why we don't have a running game, we thought Jay would prevent them from stacking the box but he is allowing it.
Good Jay - Bad Jay is starting to get really annoying and you forgot he is awful in the Red Zone which Orton was golden at.
Its really rather simple. Orton is a winner. Cutler is not.
Jay Cutler sucks. We gave up two # 1's for him, He may not be worth 1 of my # 2's...
I know people are saying we can't fire Lovie but what about a demotion? We have to pay him 2 more seasons but couldn't we pay him and demote him to just Defense? Fire RT and bring in some new blood at OC and Head Coach.
The defense "showed" because SF is NOT a good team right now and they still won. If you negate our interceptions we would have won but the fates do not like the Bears this year. Jeff, you are correct, the season is over. What the Bears front office needs to do is plan on a new Offensive Coordinator for next year. Period...and I would rather Pay lovie 2 years salary and show him the fucking door. We need new coaching and a new O line.
Good night Bears, try to not get anyone else hurt this year and let's get this season over with. I would not be surprised if the Rams beat us on the Dec. 6th the way we kill ourselves out there.
Jay is a good QB but a good QB alone cannot win football.
I don't feel any better about it this morning.
As for Jay, who knows. I think he has the ability to be an elite quarterback, but it is silly to consider him one right now. Two things worry me most about him: bonehead decisions in the red zone and terrible foot work (something not often mentioned, but very, very obvious).
The defense played well, but whoop de fucking do. They played a shit offense. On top of that, what did they have, 4 off sides penalties? Including one that took away a game changing pick from Briggs? Terrible. I know they need to get a good jump, but that is just ridiculous.
Honestly, the only players that inspire any confidence for me right now are Briggs, Gould, and Maynard. Yes, the kicker and punter are two of those players.
Quick question...why were the cameras on Babich the entire game? Did any one else notice that?
Wow. Wee. I am a Bears fan, every day, every game. I will still watch the rest of the season and cheer whenever I can. But I truly dread the rest of the schedule and am preparing to take a ton of shit from the Eagles and Vikings fans I know.
This season kicked off with unrealistic hopes, and I knew that and tried to dampen the enthusiasm with reality. I never thought it would get this bad though.
I remain dedicated to my team, but today is really tough.
Jay Cutler Sucks, we need to face facts. He fucking blows. Last nights loss was 100% on him. We win that game with kyle orton, we win that game with rex fucking grossman. He leads the league in ints, bad haircuts and douchebaggery.
Coach - i am frustrated too but if you think Rex or Orton could have handled half of the pressure on the QB, the DEPLORABLE shotgun snapping and utter lack of running game you are delusional. We could actually run the ball back then and those 2 other guys couldn't get it done. They were both beneficiaries of some truly capable defenses. Jay had a bad game but you are delusional if you think those guys are better or could have performed better in that game. I respect your right to make comments like that but i just don't agree.
the red zone picks have to stop. the 70,80,90 and 146 yard drives can continue. That's how bad the team is in general. the last drive was about 146 yards if you include all of the penalties and call backs. Give me a break. Blame the QB all you want. We drove Rex out of town because fake fans blamed him for everything. We'll fuck this up too. He threw 5 picks. 1 of them was insanely brutal. 1 came on the very last play of the game with 2 seconds left after driving all of the way down the field. 2 came off of terrible plays by Hester and 1 was interference. I sound like an apologist but i'm just being fair. He has to improve but so do the other parts of the equation.
Johnny you are apologizing for Cutler. The interference could have gone either way. The DB has a right to go for the ball. BTW, how does a guy that's 6'7" and 275 lbs get knocked off the ball by a DB? Also, the pick that set up the TD should never have been thrown. The guy was sitting on the route, big time. The best that could have happened was Hester stays on his feet and breaks up the pass. The other pick to Hester was also horrible. Yes the umpire got in the way and the pass was tipped but it should never have been thrown. Cutler has to learn to take a sack instead of trying the miracle play about 5-10 times a game.
Ok, so RIP Chicago Bears. How is it that this quarterback throws 5 INTs and we still have a chance to win. I strongly suggest that from now on, with this imposter as a pro-bowl caliber QB, that when we enter the red zone or get anywhere near it, that we hand the ball to Forte until either A) he scores or 2) 4th down comes up in which case we kick a FG. That will be a far more efficient way for this team to score than to allow Butt-ler to throw the game away. Oh sure, you can try and blame the INTs on a blown pass interference call or Hester falling down, or the ref getting in the way, or Cutlers underwear being too tight on his business, or Brad Maynard wearing two different colored socks, but its a team game....lets remember that. Gee its a good thing we didnt give up much to get Cutler...DOH!! Oh wait thats right we sold the farm to get him. And its a damn good thing they extended him a few weeks ago too. How do prior QBs get flambasted for doing some of the same things this guy has done and this guy gets a pass (so far). I want you all to google an article written by KC Joyner coming into the season about Cutler and read it. If you didnt know what we were getting with this QB, than you were fooled. I still think he's got great potential and he has a solid skill set but the dude throws INTs and blows things up, thats who he has always been. Go back and look at his stats every single year of his career. If you were fooled, then shame on you. He's "better" than anything we've had in years....lets let this play out. The offensive line is surely to blame for a lack of protection but after that 1st and 2nd drive they protected pretty well for the majority of the night. The defense stepped up to the plate last night and kept us in the game. This whole team is sickening, it needs to start by firing Lovie and Turner. Its a good thing I dont invest much into this team anymore.
Guess who's back... back again...
Naw. That's not the real Pissed Off. No chance.
North Dakota FTW.
Oh, and can we PLEASE RUN A SCREEN PASS IN THE RED ZONE.
And if a WR jumps offsides again, Im gonna murder someone.
Y'know, I'm pretty sure the McCaskeys won't pay Lovie and other coaches a full year's salary in 2010 to sit on the beach.
But I've gone from "100% sure" to "pretty sure", and the uglier these games get, the less sure I'll get.
Over, not very fun, and looks like a grim near future.
All of you that said Forte lost his burst are right. The O-line hasn't done him any favors, but he's not the same back as last year. I know what happened, he asked Cedric Benson for the extra 10 pounds he shed during the off-season. Get you're ass on a treadmill.
Shaeffer should be playing from here on out. He got a push during that last drive and gave Cutler some protection.
Olin Kruetz snaps the ball off the ground. He needs to be replaced next year. Finding a center should be a priority.
After all that talk about WRs before the season, we still need a big physical possession type receiver. Nice to see Aroshwhateverthefuck, the one guy Cutler felt he had some chemistry make the field. About fucking time. I want to see if this guy has been out of the loop for a reason. Coaches, if Jay says he thinks he has chemistry with a wide out in the future, please listen. Lets get some big guys in here that don't give up on routes and can go up for a jump ball type situation.
The most important thing I want to see the rest of the way is Jay Cutler get his confidence back. Although, I only blame him for the first and last INT, if you throw that many picks you are going to question yourself. We all know this guy has the ability. He needs to get some rhythm with our receivers and get his swag back.
I don't know why he is not using his arm on some plays to zip it into guys. I'd rather have a heater go off one of our guys chests rather than some finesse bullshit that gives the D time to react and pick it off. Enough of these touch passes. Throw the ball hard places. I don't know why he isn't using his arm strength. Maybe because the pocket is collapsing in front of him and he's afraid that if he steps up he will get crushed again by a DT.
I agree with Shady's comment above. If Cutler had thrown a winning touchdown pass, I'd still think our team was a hot mess.
I don't think Cutler is the problem.
One more thing...Mr. Turner, please make a mental note that the half back screen to Forte works. He had 160+ receiving yards. Hopefully, we won't have to rely on you remembering that for very long even though I know you wouldn't pick it up anyways.
One last thing, Everyone that is clamoring for Singletary... Get over it. He's Lovie with an outgoing personality and a bad temper. BFD. All that yelling, dirty looks, rallying the troops and rah-rah BS does nothing. At the pro level either you have to be an innovator and hire the right coaches.
Go Bears!
How can anyone say this wasn't on Cutler? Sure Turner's awful, the OL sucks, WR's and RB's are ordinary BUT Cutler killed us last night. 3 of the 5 picks are totally on him. He has 5 picks in the red zone this year. Tom Brady has 6 in his CAREER. Fuck me! As it stands right now, if we hadn't made the trade we'd still be 4-5. Cutler wins against Pitt and Seattle and Neckbeard wins Green Bay and SF. Cutler's potential is 100 times better than KO's but so what. Use your head for more than a fucking hat rack!
The D played well even though it was SF. Gore has killed a few teams this year and he had a very quiet 100 yds.
Gould and Brad played well but the ST's did zero on kickoffs and punts.
We are a very undisciplined team with all those penalties. Granted when Ron Winter is the ref there are always going to be a ton of penalties on the LOS and they will always miss penalties in the secondary. But it was that way for both teams.
Basically all we're playing for is pride the rest of the way. It will be interesting to see who shows up and who doesn't.
Go Bears!
Canada - you just compared the Bears and their playcalling, O-line and creativity in the red zone to one of the greatest franchises in recent memory. They can run it in, they can pass it in, they could execute a play so well in the playbook that the playbook itself could score on the opposing defense. we have 1 guy that everyone knows is going to throw. They know it won't be a gut blasting run for an easy score on 1st or 2nd down from the 1.5 yard line. It always comes down to 3rd down. don't you realize that? don't you have a problem with that? Isn't it a problem that we routinely drive within the 12 yard line and can't run it in? Like every other successful team? And don't tell me that the Cards are successful. they are a fluke. until we can get 2 yards on a run to finish off an 80 yard drive expect shit like this to keep on happening.
I agree with your point but Brady's career spans about 10 years not nine games.
NCAA Hoops are coming. That's all I've got to look forward to. Bears did it to me again. We are most likely the worst team in NFL. Minny will cut us up REAL NICE! I've lost count of all the awful games we've been involved in over the years. We deserve so much more than this because everybody on this site loves Bear football. Every time camera panned in on our coaching staff last night I'd curse at TV. Why was Bob "THE BULLITT" Babich on camera so much? Plus he always looks clueless...just like Lovehammer/Turner. Face it folks, it's just so hard to like this team. Yo Obama...can you spare us some of your old fashion HOPE AND CHANGE? Bears are like this country....all Fucked Up. I'm out.....
Couple of things...
I'd prefer if moving forward no one mentions the word "playoffs", or "we can still finish 11-5"...etc.
Secondly, yes, there is no defending Cutler on this one...BUT, we still AT LEAST have some stability at the position for once in our lives, and hopefully, can build around his specific strengths. I dont want to hear how we WOULD HAVE WON THAT GAME with Orton or Grossman, well guess what, we would have lost the games against Seattle and Pittsburg...so lets not get crazy here.
Sorry guys, Im just pissed off....
THE 2009 BEARS. THE FOOTBALL EQUIVALENT OF A ONE NIGHT STAND RESULTING IN A STD. SO HOT/EXCITING IN THE BEGINNING...SO VERY UPSETTING IN THE END.
The "beginning" was the first game: against Green Bay.
Not hot, not exciting. More like an abortion with a coat hanger.
Bears down.
Can you honestly say you'd feel any different about this team if Cutler would have thrown a TD instead of an INT to end the game?
Sure we would have been 5-4 not 4-5, but garbage is garbage, and both teams last night played like trash.
I should have taken a sick day.
I am still feeling sick from the game.
Agreed.
And as a Bears fan who lives in PA, I think the morning of November 23rd may be worse.
Questions:
1) As BearDown1982 asked previously, why were the cameras on Babich last night?
2) When will the organization realize Wrong Turner is garbage?
3) How many plays were wasted last night on a) fisrt down Forte stuffs up the gut, and/or 2) over-used Hester screens?
4) Is it pass interference when a safety runs through the back of a 6'7" TE, causing him to fall over...before the ball gets there?
5) Is Lovie Smith an emotionless creature being paid to where a head-set while looking confused, baffled, over-whelmed, out of answers, scared, and hungry all at the same time?
They showed Babich because he is still the defensive coordinator even though he is not playing calls anymore. The Bears are not good enough for the national audience (or the cameramen) to know that Lovie is really in charge and that Babich has been stripped of pretty much all his responsibilities and just has his job title.
I remember reading that we would be an offensive Juggernaut if we scored every time we made it in the red zone this year. The play calling by RT in the red zone is too predictable. Why burn a play and try to run up the middle? That is exactly what play we always call on first down and the same play we get defeated on 95% of the time unless it's the lowly browns.... Last night I saw us burn this same play twice in the red zone expecting to made a third down miracle. Instead we get picked off because Cutler tried to force it in. Lets use our brain RT and be more creative. Lets score every time we get in the red zone... No excuses!!!!! No more dumb ass RT play calling BS. No more red zone picks. Get Your head out of your ass Cutler & BE A LEADER and settle for three points if needed.
Go figure. The defense finally shows some life and the offense completely implodes. Can we ever play a complete game???
Honestly, I'm not surprised at all about the outcome. It must be said that the defense isn't back yet; it played a bad offense missing its tackles. I was impressed with how they held Gore, though, because he has the potential to run wild on teams. I was also glad they shut down Davis after he ran his mouth.
This reminded me of some of our games from earlier this decade when you knew the offense was useless and the only way to win was to get a pick six or a special teams touchdown.
As much as a lot of fans don't want to accept it, Cutler is part of the problem. Turner is terrible, the line is awful, and the receivers aren't legit, but a couple of those passes still were ridiculous. He seems to think he can fling it wherever because he has an arm. He's lucky he didn't have 7 interceptions and that the Niners also suck, so we didn't lose by 40. Against the Eagles or Vikings, look out below.
We will get blown out at least three more times this season and may even struggle at Detroit with our offense. The only solace is that Cutler's struggles will probably get Turner fired.
The Bears cannot be a shotgun team until the have a center than can snap the ball correctly.
