...

I've never written a post-game report in the third quarter before but today I'm going to do just that.  Because for the next quarter and a half, I'm doing other things.  Life is too short to waste on this kind of effort.

At 2:43 pm EST, I report that the 2009 season is dead.  Deceased.  Over.  The Bears may still win a few games here and there.  They may find a way to enter December with a puncher's chance at a wildcard spot.  They may provide a few memories down the stretch.  But this is the worst defense the Bears have fielded since before Dick Jauron took over.  These are the consistently worst coaching efforts since Wanny left town as well.  (As I typed that, Zack Bowman was beaten in man coverage by Larry Fitzgerald.  Bowman.  Man. Fitzgerald.)

The 2009 season can go in two directions.  (1) The dreaded "look for improvement", also known as the Houston Texans.  This will lead to a couple surprising victories in December and unmet expectations at the start of the next season.  (2) The coveted "hot seat".  How many more performances like this from Lovie's defense will it take to get him fired?  (Cue David Haugh's weekly column wherein he lists the coach's won-loss record.)

And now Fox has turned the game off.  And I don't care.  I've hit my low point as a Chicago Bears fan.  And I need a few hours off.

  • Out here in Jersey FOX NETWORK just pulled Bears game! We're so non-competitive that they shifted to Packers/Bucs. We suck so Fricking much. Lovie has to GOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Agree with all.

At least we didn't have to watch Turner run Wolfe into the middle of the line on our own 2.

  • Dear Jeff and all you loyal bears fans.. I have been watching and reading from a far from where Urlacher was raised ...I finally hit rock bottom today being a bearfan for over 30years.. I signed up to speak and comment on the LOVEFEST I am sure we will here at the postgame conference.. I have raised my children even though from a far to be true blue Chicago Bear FANS but today I went outside and turned my bear flag upside down..for we are lost in the storm. And damnit... Lovie is like a limp DICK in a whore house. I only pray that on Thursday we get to see a real coach and bring a defense scheme with passion.Obviously we speak of red and gold. I can only tell all of you as I fall to my kness and cry that our team looks of Lovie's uninspired playcalling DAMN I WISH THEY WOULD JUST WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN. But as you all know The McCaskey's will never do that. I know I am long winded and I am sorry for that but.. as they replace the game here in the southwest. I am stuck watching Greenbay. SHIT. I got to go I am sick to my stomach and I will be back to talk soon. but keep the chin up loyal bears I know are day will come just not this season. Please take out franchise quaterback out and save him. I am sure I will be getting a call from a good friend and reminding me how his team(Denver)looks and how are quaterback is running for his life.

  • I hate to say "I told you so." But I freaking did.

This is a BAD team. Can't sustain drives. Can't end oppenents drives without points. Lovie Smith has never suffered two major blowouts in a season...before today. I wonder how in the hell it will affect this baffoons for Thursday night.

I think we can pretty much forget about November, Cardinals L, 49ers L, Eagles L, Vikings L. Then the Rams W. Followed by the Packers L, Ravens L, Vikings L, and maybe squeek out a win at Ford Field W.

That is a 6-10 season, ladies and gentlemen. And that is what this Bears team is all about.

  • And don't get me started on that cocksucker Tommie Harris...

If I EVER had an idiot act like this and play so poorly for me he would be a memory. I don't know where to start...everybody is bad or old or both. I think you keep Lance Briggs and Danieal Manning because he's a good kick returner. Keep Tillman because you don't have anyone better. Dump the rest as far as I'm concerned. Can't stop the pass. Can't stop the run. Can't rush the quarterback. Can't make plays in the backfield. Can't cover recievers. Can't tackle. Can't swarm on the ball carrier.

    Can't coach. Can't call plays.

  • In reply to TheGhostofHalas:

And all those people said Urlacher was old and washed up. What we see today is what Brian means to that defense. Several years of shoring up a garbage scheme with talent and will.

  • Luckily, this bar has nice wireless and justin.tv is streaming it.

Cutler just ran an entire drive FROM THE GUN, and now it is 34-14. Easy pitch and catch.

That is the way forward for the O.

For the D - fucking send them to Guantanamo. That's a good start.

  • Pass interference on Roach clip.

He's just as bad at OLB.

  • Nicole.... Not sure I want to say my class year but Bob Griese President of my senior class and I went to our one and only Rose Bowl game where our record is a perfect 1 - 0. :>)

  • Matt Lienart.

    The Trojan condom got picked.

  • Another drive FROM THE GUN (with more screens) another pitch and catch to Olsen.

    34-21.

  • i'm holding my breath here.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Thought you left. Even if they win this - to which I say no way - the difference would be that the players got pumped up all by themselves. Certainly not by Lovie et al. I don't think these guys will play for Lovie for whatever reason. And making this mess look closer than a wipeout....well I just hope it doesn't cloud the problems.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

I can't wait to see Steve Rosenblogger's article in a couple hours.

If he hasn't died from bursting a brain artery yet.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Jeff, new rule: no more posting pics of dead animals that represent the opposition. I'm not blaming you for this loss cuz we both know how great our d was today. I'm emotionally drained and dead. I hate you, Bears, you worthless fuckers. And I still love you too(Bears, worthless fuckers).

Also, Jeff, why no opera man? Again, I'm not blaming anyone here.

Btw, everyone, were those cocksucking officials watching the same game I was? Talk about worthless.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

    Fuckers(officials).

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

    whoohoo!! green bay just lost!!!

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

OK, choose one: The Cincinnatti game or this pile of dog poop? (And remember, DEATH is not an option).

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

The winner? THIS pile of dog poop.
Because it happed in your own damn crib.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I agree - this one was worse...for few reasons:
    1) The first half was a repeat of the first half at Cincy. No fire, bad scheme, stupid mistakes on D. Lovie's inability to bring this team ready to play on Defense is inexcusable. That's the ONLY thing we expect him to do well.
    2) It was in our house.
    3) Because when they took the reins off of Cutler in the 4th quarter, we saw what the Offense CAN do.
    4) Lovie kept Cutler in there to take more unnecessary hits in another game that was then out of reach (I speak of no clock management and no challenges at the end of the 4th, with a 3 td deficit and no intention of trying to get back in the game).

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Warning: The following rant is NOT suitable for children under 17.

    Let's line'm up, shall we?

Tommie Harris: You selfish, self-centered, clueless, marshmellow soft, excuse for a football player.

    YOUR PLANE IS BOARDING!

If I am the Bears, you are SUSPENDED for as long as I can get away with doing at this point in the season. You are not worth a nickel and do not have the sense that God gave a goat.

Lovie Smith: You are fired! I mean RIGHT NOW, before I even let your ridculous self get out to the post-game interviews and try and explain away another melt-down.

Maybe you are doing the best with what you can on defense, I'm not canning you for that. No, I am sending you packing because YOU SENT THE FRANCHISE BACK ON THE FIELD WITH TWO MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME AND DOWN BY TWENTY POINTS!

    DAMN YOUR IGNORANT HIDE!

Ed Hochuli: I looked up INCOMPETENT in the dictionary, Ed, and lo and behold, THERE WAS YOUR PICTURE! The same goes for the rest of your crew of Zebras, you bunch of RETARDS. No, I apologize for that remark. It's not fair to REAL retards.

Yes, it was Pass interference on Roach because he didn't play the ball, BUT IT WAS THE SAME CALL LATER IN TEH QUARTER ON KNOX, too. Not to mention at least 4 other OBVOIUS pass interferences you refused to call against Arizona.

I hate to go profane, but civility escapes me in this case.

FUCK you Ed, You let a roughing the passer call go on the Cutler interception and you no doubt let it go because he mouthed off to you about one of the earlier obvious P.I. non-calls.

FUCK you, Ed Hochuli, and the horse you road in on.

The mopes on Fox (The "I got this job because my Dad was Jack Buck"
JOE Buck and well known Bear-hater and overrated analyst, Troy "he makes my ass ACHE-man".) HAD kiss your ass and comment on your muscles ("nice guns") when they should have been commenting on the fact that you had to correct yourself TWICE before the seats were warm because of that flabby, underdeveloped muscle between your ears!

NFL: Just how IS it that the "Known-to-all-as-truly- terrible" Ed Hochuli, PHOENIX ARIZONA resident, is officiating an ARIZONA Cardinals game in the first place?!

DON'T mis-understand me, bloggers, I am NOT saying the Bears lost this game because of the officiating. That first half performance speaks for itself. I AM saying that there was something worse than the Bear defense out there today and it was the herd of Zebras on the field who deprived an audience of what should have been, at least, a more exciting finish because the officials had obviously lost interest in a game they considered to be over at half-time.

Other than that, I have no opinions on this matter.

Could you please me pass the blood-pressure medication?

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    I second that emotion.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I think that Lovie sucks but Angelo has to be the first to go. The Bears SUCK in almost every position. All of the free agent pick ups this year have turned into busts that now leave the team with even bigger holes. They have no first or second round pick next spring and even if they did who says it won't be another lousy draft?

Here's something even more disturbing. Immagine if Bolden had been playing.

  • In reply to Vizzini:

Ask yourself why Benson, Columbo, Chris Harris, Orton, and no doubt several other Angelo picks are starring OFF THE BEARS. Yeah, coaching. D'oh!

  • In reply to Vizzini:

Yes, the officiating was horrid (I'm glad I wasn't alone comparing the Roach call to several non-calls on AZ). Yes, Joe Buck should be nicknamed "Hoover" because he sucks so much, and Troy Aikman is the poster-boy for early-onset Alzheimer's, he's so demented. And yes, Lovie Smith has shit the bed coaching for the third time this season (GB, Cincy, today).

But let's not forget two things:

The players lost this game with crappy technique and lackadaisical effort, and they seem to like Lovie. He's a "player's" coach. Just goes to show that players aren't the ones you want evaluating your coach.

The Bears could be re-nicknamed the Flies, as in "Dropping Like." Volcano, Tillman, Wolfe... how many more players are going to go down? Which makes it doubly... no, quadruple-ly stupid for Cutler to have been in the game if the Bears weren't trying to win it (and just as stupid to not be playing with urgency if they were trying to win). It's almost as if Lovie was trying to get Cutler hurt so he'd have a excuse for shitting the bed this season.

I'm disgusted. Wannstedt-level incompetence, coupled with Jauron-level blind loyalty to other incompetents. And sadly, there's no way they fire Lovie when he's got that much time left on his contract.

And given how many high-round draft picks have been busts--either because of lousy scouting, lousy coaching, or both--JA is not above reproach. He can do late-round picks pretty well, but he's just goddamn awful at Round 1 picks.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Anybody else catch that dig at the Bears by Buck and Aikman? "Sometimes high school games are on sundays"? Of course im paraphrasing but what the fuck? We are so bad the fucking commentators are comparing us to a h.s. squad. Embarassing.

This defense is old and slow and cant react. If the cover 2 relies on speed rushers on the edge.....why do we stick with 32 yr old Wale Ogunleye and 29ish A.B.????????? Tommie Harris needs to be fucking shown the door! We have several holes on this team and without a 1st or 2nd rounder next yr..............we are in trouble. There is too much talent on this roster for us to suck ass like we are. Ive always been a supporter of Lovie but im fucking sick of him and his staff and the fucked up playcalling of RT. How many wr screens do we need to run a game? Bring in MS. At least with a creative, effective offense we cam mask the fact that our beloved D is dead and buried.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

We now pause while the bugler blows "Taps" on the Bears' playoff chances.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Yeah, I was still conscious for that, BearDown11.

What I heard was something like...

Aikman or Buck:"I thought they played high school games on Friday?
    Buck or Aikman: "Sometimes Saturday."

Also, let's please use the PROPER terminolgy when referring to the Bears' defensive scheme.

It is NOT "Cover-2", though I can see why you might fall into that trap. MANY people, including the Bears' coaching staff, have been operating under that MISCONCEPTION for some time now.

"Cover-Who?" or "Cover-Few!" are both correct as they are much more accurate descriptions of what goes on (or DOESN'T go on) back there.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Sure glad we signed all those top-notch, free-agent offensive lineman, 2 of whom can't get off the bench and a 3rd who probably shouldn't.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Jeff, it kills me to see you lose hope like this man. I've read this blog for years and you have always managed to find the silver lining. At the same time, I can more than empathize with your frustration. We are not this bad of a team. The defense that got us to the super bowl just 33 months ago is intact for the most part. Our offense, on paper, is considerably better than it has been in the last decade. So what the hell is our problem? The general consensus on this blog appears to be the coaching and/or lack of effort. I personally don't think either is the case.
Lovie is a good coach. I really believe that he made a group of average to above-average players (give or take one or two legit All-stars) into a dynamic defense in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. It was only a matter of time before these overachievers were exposed as the players they truly are. The big mistake was on Angelo's part in tying up so much money in long-term deals for players who benefited from Lovie's system. Guys like Vasher, Harris, Hillenmeyer, Ogunleye and perhaps even Urlacher were never the "stars" they were hyped up to be. Good yes, but by no means the cornerstones of the franchise. These players peaked and, coupled with the fact that they were set financially for the rest of their careers, never had the incentive to improve. As a result, the defense ceased to grow and develop more talent.
This season is not lost. This team has a lot more character than they are given credit more. They could have easily called it a season after week 1 and let a better Steelers team tear them apart. If I can say anything about Lovie's bears is that they are never what they appear to be--for better and for worse. The Lovie Smith tenure has been nothing short of an enigma. I have no doubt the bears will win the next two games. Call this blind optimism, but I refuse to believe that the horrible play of the defense will persist. That being said, as great as the defense will play the next two weeks they may easily revert back to their confusingly bad play. That is Lovie football

  • In reply to MontanaBear:

You, sir, are off your nut.
Lovie is a good coach (your words), but the defense may "revert back to their confusingly bad play" week to week? That is Lovie football? And he's NOT to blame?
Essentially, you are arguing that Angelo resigning pro-bowl players (which they were at the time) is why the Bears suck today? Or don't suck, depending on the week (but they've already played the Browns)?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I guess I wasn't very clear with my message. Lovie is a good coach in that he was able to make above-average players into pro bowlers. In any other system, these aforementioned players were/are not great individual players, but rather the product of great defense as a whole. When the Bears' defense has been great, it has never been the case that a few players were outstanding while the rest held their own. I believe that one of Lovie's greatest talents is not developing good players, but making great defenses as a whole.
Yeah these players were pro bowlers at the time, but most of them are nothing without the other 10 players on the field with them.
You can't tell me that Vasher's lucrative contract didn't have anything to do with the hesitation to finally pull him. Zack Bowman and Graham were completely outperforming him, but they missed valuable experience based on the fact that the BT did not want to look like fools for signing Vasher to a huge contract.
And yes, I am saying the unpredictability of the Bears' defense is not completely on Lovie. You can't make mediocre players something they are not and you can't make a player want something as much as you do.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Can you imagine what it's going to be like when we go up against the Vikings?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

OK, I'm very upset with our defense. Tommy you really fu***d up and there is no excuse for your poor sportsmanship. I can't fathom why we didn't double cover Larry Fitzgerald... what does it take to get our defense to play with a little passion like i saw a small glimpse of in the second half?

On the offense I liked our first series but why in our second series did we try the reverse play with Hester? Another stupid dumb ass call from RT. Our Oline is not protecting Cutler and they look horrible out there. What are we going to do? I can't stand to see our team get demolished every week on both sides of the ball.

I was also very suspicious of several of the penalties called by Referee Ed Hochuli and the lack of penalties called on the Cards. Every time I see him calling a game he is always calling bullshit calls. Almost every time we made a good play today, a flag was thrown against us. I want this whole group investigated and fired for doing a horrible job. I really feel like the refs were biased against us... Am I the only one who saw this????

    Referee: 85 - Ed Hochuli
    Umpire: 31

    best comment ever.

LOL ! Well, it was a pretty profane game Albert, so let loose and tell us what you really think :o)

May I join you ? There are a couple of stones in my shoe .....

Zebras ? Meh. Once you start blaming the zebras, you're clutching at straws. If we need officiating to help us win games, then we've already lost ....

Tommie. Tommie. Tommie. Cheerio now. Fuck off.

Olsen, still have my eye on you boy.

Lovie. Just fuck away off, generally. Best of luck 'n' all, but go.

Jay - there are tools in the world who still slag you off. You are all we have that is worth anything. We love you.

MontanaBear - it must be truly wonderful to live in your world. I envy you. Yes. Lovie is a great coach. Now, off to the land of nod using marshmallows for pillows ....sweet dreams.

I had just finished telling my son that the beating was getting so bad that the 'game ending injuries' were sure to follow. Sure enough, Peanut (who was just getting torched all day) hit the dirt with a 'shoulder'. I never thought he was a quitter, but when things get this dark you find out all kinds of things about the team...some that you really don't want to know.

  • That cut block by Gandy was filthy. Really lit a fire in Brown's ass, and he rammed it down his throat. Warner sacked.

  • That blitz was sell out for the safety. It didn't work.
