The Districts have been touring endlessly, on their best record to date, Popular Manipulations. None of which would have been possible if it wasn't for the addition of lead guitar player Pat Cassidy. Not to take anything away from this band. They were incredible without Pat. But, as I have written on several occasions, Cassidy's stylized playing has given the band new life, a wider canvas, and brighter paint, to color with.
So, their return to the studio was eminent. For a band so young and talented, the only logical next step is more great music. And what better reason to write than a protest song?
"Loving Protector Guy" is a song written to promote Everytown For Gun Safety. It revolves around a driver shooting another driver...with a water gun. That gun in question looks real, and for a brief moment, it's violating, desperate, and scary to the victim being sprayed.
As you listen closely a story unfolds about "displays of power," and "the american dream." It's powerful, and political, and I'll leave it up you to unravel. We all need to think about where we at, and where our country is heading, and "Loving Protector Guy" is a good start.
