A 2016 Barrel-Aged Barleywine Was My Favorite Beer Of 2018

One of best beers I had this year was from my cellar. It was a vintage barrel-aged barleywine, and it was my favorite beer of 2018.

The year was 2016, and a friend of mine bought me a bomber of beer as a belated birthday present. A barrel-aged English-Style Barleywine ale called "Commander" from Lift Bridge.

Lift Bridge is a Minnesota-based craft brewery located in Stillwater, Minnesota. Commander turned out to be a mint-cookie monster on par with those delicious Girl Scout delicacies. The cardamom they brewed this masterpiece with is what imparts that beautiful Shamrock Shake aroma, but that subtle hint of anise? Not sure where that comes from.

The hefty malt does its job and balances out the booze from the Heaven Hill barrels, and this thing plays out like a wet dream, with lots of head and great lacing.

I'm not going to talk about every sip, but I will say this should be on your hit list. Trade for it, or show up at a tasting where this puppy is being poured. Maybe even ask a friend who travels through the area to secure you a bottle? Then, let it sit for a few years because this BA "Commander" is one to age.
