Another Record Store Closes it Doors

Goodbye Discus, goodbye. I will miss your beautiful bins and the dirt that covered my hands after sifting through the rubble. There were good discs and there were bad discs. There were discs with no cases, and discs with cardboard cases. There were broken cases, and there were brand new cases. There were cases with the wrong disc inside, and cases containing no disc. And these were just the discs in the dollar bin.

Most of the cases were covered in dirt and you had to change them out when you got home. But the excitement was in the hunt. If you found the right disc, like the debut Strokes LP, Is This It, you felt like a star, and you walked home satisfied.

The majority of the clientele came to rent bootlegged porn, which was a sight in itself. But I would kneel on the floor and scour the bins for lost treasure. Often the guy behind the counter would talk about imports and whatever else might be playing throughout the store at the time. That's what I loved most about going to record stores: talking up the workers. The camaraderie, and the love for music. Being turned on to a new band, and coming home with new music.

Now, what's left? Everything's pre-order because stores can't afford the stock anymore. Best Buy used to fill that void, but now they have just a handful of CD's and the employees are clueless. They barely know what they have in stock, and good luck chatting them up about The Vaccines.

So, the stores keep closing, and who am I to talk? I shop in the cut outs...

  • I walked by it last week and noticed this too... Sucks. There was a Discus location in Champaign when I was going to college and one near where I grew up in Crestwood not to mention the Broadway store down the street from where I live now. So I'll miss it. (Had no idea about the bootlegged porn by the way lol. Hilarious).

  • I never knew they had more than one location? Almost all record stores are gone now...
