Frank Ocean's Channel Orange has been on steady repeat for the last 3 weeks. I dial up Spotify and play this thing during showers, work out sessions, and cleaning sprees. It seems to have all the elements of a great album: ups, downs, highs and lows. It has a bit of Drake ("Thinkin Bout You"), Lenny Kravitz ("Swim Good"), John Legend ("Crack Rock"), Maxwell ("Sierra Leone"), Prince ("Bad Religion"-hello Purple Rain!), Stevie Wonder (Sweet Life), and Jellyfish ("Fertilizer"). I keep hearing influences every time I spin this album. Or should I say "when my drive starts spinning this album?" No. Maybe I should write that I hear new comparisons every time I stream this masterpiece.
Anyways, this journey into music history is so fun, bringing joy with each listen. I have added every Frank Ocean song in the Spotify catalog to my Channel Orange playlist. I didn't realize that was him singing on Kanye and Jay-Z's Watch The Throne album until I searched for his music and it pulled that record up. Now "Made In America" has become my new anthem. Every time it comes on I find myself endlessly singing "Sweet baby Jesus!" I've even been lobbying the guys over at Moving In Stereo to give this thing another chance. We are all big music fans and I know any true music lover will dig this thing. This record will make my year end Top 10 list. Yes it's that good "Forest Gump."
Many artists have already covered Ocean's music. The Afghan Whigs are big fans, and apparently Nite Jewel is as well.
