Remaking "Somebody." Gotye Remixed

For a man who's seemingly been making music for a decade or so, you wouldn't know it.  Most of us only know Gotye for his hit single and a name we can't pronounce. I must have heard "Somebody That I Used To Know" a dozen times this weekend, while traveling down south for a wedding.  It's still in regular rotation on Top 40, and thanks to the dance mix it's now in heavy rotation on all Rhythmic stations.  This remix, produced by DJ Mike D, continues to give this song legs, and a new life for endless airplay. I must admit, I still LOVE this song. Yep, I just can't get enough of screeching along to it.

It's an interesting concept though.  Remixing a song to get it played on different stations.  Basically, taking an indie song and turning it into a dance hit.  Kings of Leon have had this done a few times ("Sex On Fire"), and so have other bands.  Essentially, Chicago's Finest Rock (WXRT-FM 93.1) and The Killer "B"  (WBBM-FM B96.3) can play the same song, while catering to different audiences.  Is this the future of music.  Is this something that you like or dislike?  I definitely like both versions of "Somebody That I Used To Know."  But, I'm not sure if this is something I always want to see, or hear happen.

Here's a dance version of his latest single "Eyes Wide Open."

  • The one re-mix i dig more than the original (which i also like), is Fatboy Slim's version of Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha." Groovy energy. Besides that, eh, go for it. But i prolly won't tune in.
