2011 saw some of the best hip hop releases in years. Drake's sophomore effort, did not disappoint. Take Care is a great record, with a handful of stellar songs. I won't even bring up the two singles that played out on radio. What I will nudge you to check out are those tracks that need to be heard, "Take A Shot For Me," "Underground Kings," and the risk-taking affair he has put together with The Weekend called "Loving The Crew."
But first, let's talk about my favorite song off the record, the gorgeous "Over My Dead Body." The keys create this sparkling bed of instrumentation for the vocals to shine off of, and they do. The hook is entrancing; you almost want to sing the hook more than you want repeat Drake's rap. Drake spits about his life, and at times it's a little braggadocios, but then again, that's rap.
And this is the only sound you should fear
Man, these kids wear crowns over here and everything is all right
"Over My Dead Body," is classic Drake, a little reminiscent of "Fireworks," off of Thank Me Later. It's a great jam, but most of the feeling comes from the music, while the lyrics take a back seat. "Over My Dead Body" opens up the album perfectly with just the right amount of introspection. Drake's take on becoming a colossal star begins here, and ends 16 songs later. Take Care is still spinning in my 6-disc changer, and is definitely in my top 5 LP's of the year.
