Yesterday we visited the possibility of the Theo compensation issue holding up a potential Matt Garza deal.
Later in the day John at Cubs Den was told by a source that Alfonso Soriano had nixed a deal that would have sent him to Baltimore.
I was able to reach out to some of my sources to check on both. The Garza angle wasn't dismissed out of hand, but I was told the asking price is what made a Detroit deal fall apart.
Theo and Jed insisted on top prospects pitcher Jacob Turner and third baseman Nick Castellanos.
The Cubs haven't budged since, I was told yesterday.
The timing issue that Brett at Bleacher Nation brings up is interesting, but I was told it was more of a matter of getting minor future roster issues cleared up and being able to also settle the San Diego comp for Jed Hoyer.
Another tidbit that was discussed was the possibility that the Cubs would extend Garza and then deal him. This won't happen I was told. The Cubs would only be interested in an extension if they plan on keeping him.
As far as the Soriano rumor goes, I reached out to someone in his camp not long after John put up his post. I was told that after his just leaving the Dominican Republic, he wasn't aware of any such development.
If it did happen, no one could blame Soriano.
No one wants to go to Baltimore if given the choice.
