Nick Cafardo has some thoughts on the Cubs this morning.
For one, he thinks Theo Epstein will listen to offers on Matt Garza. I’m really struggling with this one. Epstein and Jed Hoyer have said all along that they would attack the Cubs on two fronts simultaneously.
Restock the farm system, while still trying to fix the parent club. Leaving open the possibility of contending either this year (a stretch) or next year.
2013 could be the year to look to in getting a contender back on the field. The Cubs will have shed even more payroll to go after some potentially significant free agent pitchers available.
Trading Garza would send a pretty loud and clear message that the Cubs won’t be contending anytime soon. That would let much air out of the balloon around Wrigley.
Now, if Theo gets blown away with a move that would set the Cubs up well in the future..which would he lean towards?
"I'm going to look for moves that make us better in the long run but don't negatively have an impact on us in 2012," Epstein said.
But Epstein added he would "err on the side of the long haul" over 2012 if it comes down to it.
"I think that's the position we're in right here," he said.
Maybe there is a match with Boston? Would Theo feel more comfortable turning to a system he knows so well?
On the other hand, Theo has long coveted Garza. He could see Garza as too important of a building block, which is the way I see it.
Cafardo also questions the Cubs interest in Mark Buehrle, thinks the Cubs should send Tyler Colvin as compensation for Theo, and says Dale Sveum wouldn’t have played well in Boston but will be fine in Chicago.
Sveum’s personality wouldn’t have gone over in Boston. He’s a nice guy with great baseball passion, but very quiet and not someone who could take the attention away from his team and put it on himself, which is what managers need to do in big markets. He’s better for the Cubs in a rebuilding mode. That’s the way one Major League Baseball executive put it recently. I think he’s right.
Sounds a bit homerish to me. "The guy the Cubs stole from the Red Sox, yeah he wouldn’t have been a fit here in Boston anyway"
"The Cubs can have him"
Somehow I don’t really think that is how it was viewed from Boston’s end.
