Surprised? Most certainly not.
Dejected? Not yet.
It started out nicely. Jeff Samardzija walked the first batter and gave up a hit to start the first inning but settled down and got two strike outs to hold the D-Backs scoreless. Then Emilio Bonifacio hit the first pitch in the bottom of the inning for a triple and scored to give the Cubs an early lead. It had all the makings of a fun afternoon for the inaugural spring training game at Cubs Park in Mesa.
But it was pretty much downhill from there and history will show that the Cubs christened this latest physical manifestation of the team's future with a disappointing loss.
