No haiku today, just outrage.
For a few days I've been trying to compile a list of the most offensive reactions to last Friday's events in Newtown CT. The most difficult thing was trying to rank them, and decide which was the most outrageous statement or action.
A Texas gun store is offering discounts to teachers, and a Tea Party group said that "Had George Zimmerman been at the front door ... those children would still be alive". Is either of those more ridiculous than statements by Mike Huckabee that seemed to blame the assault on the lack of G-d in schools or Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) suggesting we provide teachers with assault rifles?
You've probably heard that the Westboro Baptist "Church" of "G-d Hates Fags" fame is threatening to picket at funerals of the victims - because these types of tragedies are the result of our country inviting G-d's wrath by refusing to restrict the rights of homosexuals. But that's not much different than what we hear from James Dobson, founder of Focus On The Family and former advisor to President Bush II who said " ... a lot of these things are happening around us, and somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now, but I am going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the Scripture and on God Almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what’s going on." Dobson isn't invading the privacy of mourners, but his beliefs about why this has happened are virtually identical to the haters at WBC.
But then I saw this ... writing for National Review - a leading conservative magazine - Charlotte Allen blames it on the lack of men at Sandy Hook School:
There was not a single adult male on the school premises when the shooting occurred ... There didn’t even seem to be a male janitor to heave his bucket at Adam Lanza’s knees. Women and small children are sitting ducks for mass-murderers ... in general, a feminized setting is a setting in which helpless passivity is the norm. Male aggression can be a good thing, as in protecting the weak — but it has been forced out of the culture of elementary schools and the education schools that train their personnel. Think of what Sandy Hook might have been like if a couple of male teachers who had played high-school football, or even some of the huskier 12-year-old boys, had converged on Lanza.
Congratulations Ms. Allen. At least until we hear from the NRA on Friday, you're the current front-runner for the most offensive statement in the wake of this tragedy.
Can you please just shut up, now.
A friend just pointed out that Charlotte Allen is not only wrongheaded, she's just plain wrong. There WAS an adult male at Sandy Hook when Friday's shootings occurred. His name was Adam Lanza.
