Two Touchdowns Beat One--Cubs 14 Nationals 6

Two Touchdowns Beat One--Cubs 14 Nationals 6
It was the best of times. It was the blurst of times. The Cubs played two different ballgames in nine innings tonight in Washington. They won both of them in strange fashion even though it only counts as one win in the standings. Two veteran aces went head to head and left the game having... Read more »

Let's Play Two (Finally)! - Nationals 10, Cubs 3

The Cubs and Nationals got underway at 7:25 CST after about an hour and a half rain delay. The rain was still coming down at the first pitch from Nationals starter Joe Ross, but the show must go on. After a groundout from leadoff man Daniel Murphy and a flyout from Javier Báez, Anthony Rizzo... Read more »

Duel--Cubs 4 Nationals 3

Duel--Cubs 4 Nationals 3
This was a well played game of baseball. Well it wasn’t a great day at the plate for either team, but it was certainly great pitched baseball. The two offenses each scored more runs in the ninth inning than both teams scored combined in the first eight innings. The legend of David Bote continues to... Read more »

Nationals @ Cubs: Series Preview (8/10-8-12)

Nationals @ Cubs: Series Preview (8/10-8-12)
The Cubs return home after what at first appears to be a disappointing series win in Kansas City. You really wanted a sweep, and losing the last one in such silly and belching-like fashion is something of a kick to the solar plexus. But it only looks bad when combined with the split with the Padres before, as 4-3 against two of the worst teams in MLB would definitely not get a "satisfactory" on the report card...

Grand Larceny--Cubs 2 Nationals 1

Grand Larceny--Cubs 2 Nationals 1
The Cubs and Nationals have played three incredible baseball games. There are a few themes that have developed in these heart-stopping affairs. The starting pitching has been as good as advertised and more. The games have been incredibly tight with remarkable plays made by each side. One thing that changed was the amount of mistakes... NLDS Game 3 Preview: Cubs vs Nationals

NLDS Game 3 Preview: Cubs vs Nationals
I’m not sure if I’ve taken a playoff loss as well as I did Saturday afternoon. Typically, I can get emotional (understatement) when I’m wrapped up in the moment (I’m sure I can’t be alone in this). Later, however, after it’s all said and done, I can have a more level-headed reaction to what’s just... Read more »

Everything is Awful--Nationals 6 Cubs 1

Everything is Awful--Nationals 6 Cubs 1
Confidence was not high heading into this series, and I think everyone would be pretty hapy to be standing level one game a piece at this point prior to the start of the series. The way that the Cubs achieved that though washes away any positive felings at this time. The Cubs played perhaps their... Read more »

Series Preview--Cubs at Nationals: 6/26-6/29

Series Preview--Cubs at Nationals: 6/26-6/29
The Nationals hold a commanding lead in the NL East. The Cubs are trailing in the NL Central. The differences in the two club’s season are pretty easy to spot beyond the records. The Cubs clearly are limping into this showdown of what was supposed to a potential postseason matchup. The limping is hardly metaphorically... Read more »

And there were many strikeouts: Nationals 4, Cubs 1

And there were many strikeouts: Nationals 4, Cubs 1
Tonight’s game from Max Scherzer was, among other things, a testament to the challenge of carrying a no-hitter, perfect game, or even 20 strikeout performance through to the end. Not to say that it wasn’t brilliant. Early on, this looked transcendent of metaphor. The kind of game that stands on its own and is used... Read more »

Downing an Ace--Cubs 8 Nationals 6

Downing an Ace--Cubs 8 Nationals 6
You almost have to feel bad for opposing teams. The Nationals managed to grab an early lead. They had a bona fide ace on the mound, and it still became victory number 22 for the reincarnated ’27 Yankees. Facing the Cubs right now has to be a soul crushing experience. They are just so good...
