A glimpse into the organization and thoughts on Spring Training

A glimpse into the organization and thoughts on Spring Training
Almost a year ago, I had the chance to listen to Horst Schulze, former president of the Ritz Carlton Hotels, speak on leadership and his organizational philosophy, and one of the things that was emphasized was the importance of empowering his employees at every level. His focus was on using this to provide exceptional customer... Read more »

The Madness of March

The Madness of March
This month can be such a tease, especially if you live in the Midwest. It’s “spring,” and though we have been admittedly spoiled in this part of the country so far this year, March can go in vastly different directions. In fact, I think T.S. Eliot got it dead wrong. This is the cruelest month.... Read more »

Heyward and Rizzo homer, but Grimm and Ramirez struggle

Heyward and Rizzo homer, but Grimm and Ramirez struggle
It’s spring training for game recaps, too. Don’t worry, that will be the first and last time you see me use that phrase here. I just couldn’t resist. My official game preview/recap duties don’t start for about another month, but I wanted to take the opportunity today to get some work in on the game... Read more »

The fight for the last bench spot

The fight for the last bench spot
This is a battle I know all too well. In fact, given my extensive personal history of watching a lot of high school games from some of the closest seats in the house with a uniform on, I feel I am perhaps extra qualified to delve into this topic, and it might explain my interest... Read more »

Spring Training: Hot starts have put these 10 players on Cubs radar for 2013

Bryan Bogusevic, OF, 1B: Bogusevic didn't look like he had a shot this spring but he has played his way up to the point where his manager has noticed, ‘‘The at-bats he’s putting together, the at-bats against left-handed pitching . . . he’s the leader in camp right now. I’ve been impressed.’’ Bogusevic is hitting .450 and has hit 4 doubles, 1 triple and 1 HR. That gives him a .900 slugging pct. He has also drawn 3 walks to give him a .522 OBP.
Spring Training isn’t meaningless for everyone.  For the established veterans it means getting in shape, working on their game, and just getting ready for the season.  But there are also rookies looking to make an impression, young players looking to earn a job, and veterans looking to hang on.  For those players, spring is about... Cubs prospect Logan Watkins looking to make an impression this spring
Cubs prospect Logan Watkins might be a long shot for a major league job this year,  but it doesn’t mean he can’t make a good impression this spring.  In fact, he probably already has, scoring 670 in manager Dale Sveum’s annual bunt tournament.  Now I have to admit I don’t follow the tournament, but I’m... New stance has Cubs, Brett Jackson confident he'll hit this season

New stance has Cubs, Brett Jackson confident he'll hit this season
We’ve said it here before many times.  Brett Jackson has almost everything the Cubs want in a player.  He’s athletic, he can run, he can defend, he’s willing to grind out ABs, and he can hit with some occasional power.  He showed he could do all of those things in his brief call up last... Which Cubs will surprise this spring?

Which Cubs will surprise this spring?
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. -Rogers Hornsby We can stop staring out the window. Updated Cubs roster situation: Only bullpen still in flux
There have been some unexpected developments today as it seems clear the front office is working to keep as many assets as possible.  Players with options are being sent down so that the Cubs can keep Lendy Castillo whom they would lose if they don’t make the Opening Day roster. The only thing left to... Read more »
