A look back at the Cubs 2015 IFA class

A look back at the Cubs 2015 IFA class
I will be writing a bit more about the Cubs minor leagues even as the MLB team flourishes.  I’m enjoying the MLB success as much as anyone, but to stay successful, you have to remember how you got their in the first place and just as importantly, how to stay there.  Today we’re going with... Cubs aiming for quality and quantity in 2015 IFA class
UPDATE 2 Amarista, who was said to be learning toward the Cubs, will not sign today but the bigger news is that Eddy Martinez will not sigh either. The Cubs are said to have interest in the player that some believe to be the best in this class, but the Dodgers are thought to be... Read more »

Could 23 year old outfielder Yasmani Tomas provide an answer in the Cubs OF? Maybe.

Could 23 year old outfielder Yasmani Tomas provide an answer in the Cubs OF? Maybe.
Once in a while I get asked about recent Cuban prospects (post Jose Abreu) and my answer has been largely, “Meh”.  I haven’t covered much on them because frankly, the word I heard was they were a collection of 5th OF’ers, utility infielders, and relief pitchers — maybe a fringe starter among them. Yasmani Tomas... Read more »

Cubs To Meet With Masahiro Tanaka

Cubs To Meet With Masahiro Tanaka
If you’ve been reading for the past 3 years, you know I don’t really go gaga about every free agent.  For me to talk about major free agents I need to believe that A) the Cubs can sign him and B) the Cubs want to sign him. That hasn’t happened very often. I didn’t talk... Read more »

Why the Cubs could win the Tanaka sweepstakes

Why the Cubs could win the Tanaka sweepstakes
There is an argument that Tanaka will sign with the Yankees over the Cubs. It goes something like this: It’s because they’re the Yankees and they have money. Those things by themselves are indeed pretty formidable but the positives for the Yankees pretty much begin and end right there. Let’s put the money issue aside... Read more »

So you're saying there's a chance...are Dodgers out on Cuban RHP Miguel Gonzalez?
So while rummaging for news on Alfonso Soriano, I came across this tweet from MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez, I’m as surprised as anyone to see report that #Dodgers are no longer interested in Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. That’s a big deal at this stage. He goes on to say that the Cubs remain interested as of last... Read more »

Cubs favorites for Taiwanese RHP JenHo Tseng
The Cubs aren’t done on the international market and it appears they have emerged as the favorites for Taiwanese RHP JenHo Tseng.  He’s expected to command at least $1.5M according to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. I asked about Tseng and was told this: ” He’s good. Mature for his age. Fastball 90-94, slider, plus curveball and... Read more »

With Cubs set to finalize Jimenez deal are they just ignoring IFA spending limits? If so, what are the implications?

With Cubs set to finalize Jimenez deal are they just ignoring IFA spending limits? If so, what are the implications?
There’s an interesting article this morning by Phil Rogers suggesting the Cubs aren’t done and are going after at least one more top prospect.. This despite already being well over their spending pool, by one estimate $629,700  but that doesn’t seem to include the most recent signing/agreement of C Johan Matos, whom we mentioned a... Cubs sign SS Gleyber Torres, pitcher Jefferson Mejia. Still pursuing Jimenez, Moreno

Cubs sign SS Gleyber Torres, pitcher Jefferson Mejia. Still pursuing Jimenez, Moreno
As expected the Cubs signed 16 year old SS Gleyber Torres for $1.7M.  Torres was the consensus #2 prospect in the international pool with some scouts ranking him as the best overall player.  BAs Ben Badler had him ranked 2nd while MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo had him ranked 3rd. I wrote this about him back in... Read more »

With more international players on the way, here's a quick look at the VSL and DSL Leagues
