Cubs @ Brewers Series Preview: (9/11-9/13)

Once again, the Cubs have a chance to bury the Brewers. They have not been able to in recent years. Milwaukee is not as good as they have been, so it is doable. Mainly, Chicago needs to play better and build momentum for the playoffs. Only 15 games left, time to kick it into gear!

  • Not very confident about tonight’s game. Lost all confidence in Lester weeks ago, and if I remember correctly, Woodruff is one of the pitchers that usually shuts down the Cubs offense pretty well.

Lots of traffic and pitches in the first inning for Lester. IF Bote would have fielded that Lester wouldn't have thrown so many 1st inning pitches.

    In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

We dodged a run there--Braun swung at ball 4.

  • Unless I'm wrong, in order to get a hit, you have to actually swing a baseball bat.

  • In reply to Denizen Kane:

White Sox also being no-hit through 5. Must be something in the Chicago water.

  • Time to shorten the leash on Lester. Running low on bullets although he’s pitching a fine game.

  • If Rossy "Lives or Dies" with this "swing and miss" top of the batting order, maybe Maddon will hire him as a bench Coach.

For all those who love high draft choices, Woodruff was an 11th round choice.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Who doesn't love 11th round draft choices?

It is hard to believe, but I have read 11% of players picked between the 11th and 20th round make the majors.

Theo's has already used two 11th rounds picks in two trades.
11th round draft pick in 2012 Rashad Crawford CF. Part of package to Yankees for Chapman.

11th round in 2015 Matt Rose 1B. Part of package to Whitesox for Quintana.

  • This HP umpire is giving a good example of why robo ump is a good idea. Anything near the zone is being called a strike.

  • In reply to cubbustible:

Didn't you hear? It's Frank Drebin Day at Miller Park.

  • In reply to cubbustible:

It was a generous but fair zone.

  • In reply to 44slug:

Sorry, ‘generous’, is NOT how the strike zone is described in the rule book, last I looked.

  • In reply to cubbustible:

There is just something fundamentally wrong with a game in which the majority of outs were via K's. After all, neither team was exactly facing Nolan Ryan or Bob Gibson.

  • In reply to wthomson:

I believe they’ll have to do something about the inconsistencies. You can’t have that nowadays, especially since there is so much attention towards the recognition of the importance those inconsistencies play in the outcomes.
I can’t wait to see games played where umpires are no longer excused as being part of the ‘human element’.
I really think it would speed up game times, pitchers wouldn’t be as likely to nibble around the edges of the zone, waiting for the ‘generous strike call’.

  • Was anybody else hoping that when Bryant hit the triple, that Ross would put Javy in as a pinch runner and try to steal that one run?

  • Cubs lose. Both StL and ATL also lost. The new Numbers:

    Clinch a playoff berth: 13.
    Clinch the division: 16.
Clinch the nr 2 seed: 16.

  • As bad as it has been lately we still have a 3 game lead in mid September. I’ll take it. I would think between Baez, KB, Rizzo or Wilson 2 of 4 will get hit by end of season.

  • Only 12 games left. I'm finding it easy to not be too upset about last night. Brewers pitching staff was at their best. It was the best that the Cubs have seen this year. Manny always has a big strike zone, but the Cub batters were often frozen on strike three with pitches well in the zone.

  • In reply to 44slug:

Do you mean only 14 games left? ;)

  • In reply to 2016 Cubs:

    Thanks.

  • One of the many good things about getting this short season in, is everyone gets a look at this same stagnant cubs offense and we can hopefully make changes going into 2021. New manager Ross "holding guys accountable" was not all that was needed, as it turns out.

  • In reply to DarBar15:

DJ LeMahieu sure would have had a nice career in the Cubs lineup.

  • In reply to cubbustible:

When he was here he wasn’t even a Ryan Theriot

  • In reply to cubbustible:

    So would have Lou Brock

  • In reply to DarBar15:

I took heat for several years cause I kept saying you can’t fire the manager, pitching coach and hitting coach every year. At some point you have to blow this roster up not duct tape it with new hitting coaches.

  • 16 K's -- 0 W ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Put the ball in play, guys!! No more excuses!!
