Cubs vs Cardinals Series Preview: (8/17-8/19)

The Cubs face their first adversity of the 2020 season after dropping three straight to the Brewers this weekend. Despite that, they still sit at 13-6 and hold a less secure 3.5 game lead in the NL Central.

Chicago now welcomes St. Louis for bizarre five-game series over three days. The Cardinals just returned to play this weekend after staff and players tested positive for COVID-19 almost two weeks ago. Part of the makeup plan involves two doubleheaders on Monday and Wednesday at Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals have only played eight games this year, but last year's squad won the division. The starting rotation is weaker especially with Miles Mikolas injured. Paul Goldschmidt still looms in the middle of the lineup.

The Cubs need to focus on winning these games, easier said than done with the issues swirling around St. Louis. They can continue to put themselves in a position to pile up wins and secure playoff position.

  • Just saw that the Cubs are bringing up Tyson Miller to start the second game of today’s doubleheader.

  • In reply to Cubber Lang:

Awesome! Really like that kid, prayerfully he does great!

  • Can he hit?

  • Why is Phegley the DH?

  • In reply to Treebeard:

Guessing the Cubs want to stack RH lineup vs LH starter. Souza out with leg injury replaced by Happ.

  • In reply to stix:

    I see.......

  • Of all these temporary rules changes, the only ones I like are the 26th man and the 3 batter minimum.....they can shelve the rest. Do believe the 26th man will be permanent.

  • This might be the lowest batting average lineup for a team that is playing their 20th game I have ever seen. Happ hitting over .300 and no one else over .250 and most not even close to that.

How many runs saved by Albert A today with those two catches? He certainly doesn’t take his hitting woes out to the field with him.

  • I have to imagine that at some point Happ is going to bat third. Not that lineup alignment matters that much, but it would be nice to have him and Rizzo back to back.
