Cubs Release Spring Training Roster

Brandon Morrow

Brandon Morrow

The Cubs officially invited 21 non-roster players to big league camp this year. Two thirds of the invitees have previous MLB experience. Former closer Brandon Morrow is the most prominent name on the list.

Camp opens next Wednesday for pitchers and catchers, with full squad workouts kicking off on Monday, February 17th. If you are planning to visit Mesa this spring activities on the backfields generally get into full swing around 10:00 AM.

  • My mindset: wouldn’t it be great if Morrow has a strong first half and they can flip him for prospects at the deadline!

  • In reply to Cubs09:

If he has a strong 1st half it means the cubs are winning

  • With only 2-3 spots in the bullpen open, If Morrow and Hultzen can be good that really helps strengthen the relief corp. But can kimbrel return to his old form?

  • IF Nico goes to AAA to start the year, who do you guys like for 2B? (I prefer Happ platooning in CF and Heyward staying in RF) I guess I'll go Garcia but maybe Asuaje or Joseph surprise and can keep 2B warm until Nico is ready.

  • In reply to DarBar15:

Bote starts unless hurt. Perez is no worse than the three you mentioned, but they're all playing for AAA roster fill unless Cubs can trade Descalso. I thought for sure they would trade him and a mid-level prospect as a way to get the payroll down.

  • In reply to charactercounts:

Yeah I don't know how good the others are with the glove but I guess Bote isn't terrible there

  • In reply to charactercounts:

Yeah,... Bote is probably a regular at 2B to start the season. He definitely won't hurt defensively there and has a solid enough bat.

  • In reply to DarBar15:

To answer your question, Jason Kipnis name keeps popping up. Does Jason have anything left in the tank ?

  • In reply to DarBar15:

Looks like Nico has a good chance to earn his way onto the roster with a good spring training

  • In reply to WaitUntilNextYear:

Gee. Where have I heard this before....?

  • Late last month, the Cubs were rumored to have interest in former Cub-killer Scooter Gennett Have those rumors gone anywhere?

  • In reply to DropThePuck:

Scooter gennett is the new Chris Simms

  • No invite for Zagunis.

    In reply to Hagsag:

    Is he even with them?

  • In reply to Hagsag:

And Donnie Dewees is not on the Spring Training roster either. I thought Zagunis and Dewees had the inside track for the 5th OF spot, with Dewees's speed giving him an edge for the 26th roster position.

  • In reply to DropThePuck:

Almora’s still here. Schwarber, Heyward, Happ, Souza & Almora barring a trade or unforeseen transaction.

Looking at Bleacher Nation's top 30 prospects there are 2 that could help us this year in the bullpen--Ryan Jensen and Justin Steele. It depends on what the Cubs want to do with Jensen, but even if they want him to start they could begin him in the bullpen.
