Trent Giambrone (.245/.314/.491) has had an interesting season. He's struggled to make contact at the same rate he has in previous seasons, and hasn't improved his inconsistent patience at the plate, but he is hitting for more power (career highs in doubles, homers) and he did seem to solve his previously perplexing issues with hitting left-handed pitching (.242/.336/.600). He isn't a great defender at any spot on the field, but he can get the job done at 2B, either corner outfield spot, and can at least fill in at the other three infield spots in a pinch.

It wasn't with the same efficiency we've become accustomed to (5 BB, 107 pitches) but Tyson Miller did put together an effective performance, pitching into the 6th inning while allowing just 1 run (on a solo homer, his 10th allowed in 27.2 IP since joining Iowa).

Biloxi 7, Tennessee 3

Game Recap

Tennessee clawed back from a 3-0 deficit beginning in the bottom of the 7th. They scored twice, with doubles by Tyler Payne and Charcer Burks playing a key role. They'd tie the game in the next inning on a Vimael Machin solo homer, but Manuel Rondon, who pitched a scoreless 8th, was blitzed for four runs in the 9th.

Top Performers

  • Vimael Machin: 2-4, HR (4), R, RBI (.291)
  • Tyler Payne: 1-4, 2B, R (.158)
  • Charcer Burks: 1-4, 2B, RBI (.237)
  • Erich Uelmen: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K (6.00)

Michael Rucker

Michael Rucker

He only pitched 2/3 of an inning, but Michael Rucker did extend his scoreless streak to 9 innings over his last 4 appearances. With so many of the Iowa arms in Chicago right now, I wouldn't be surprised if Rucker gets another callup to Des Moines, even if it is only temporary. He did make one appearance in AAA earlier this year and tossed two scoreless innings. Rucker has been as good as any of the Smokies relievers after a nightmare first six weeks of the season.

Wilmington 4, Myrtle Beach 1

Game Recap

Ryan Kellogg was pitching well, having allowed just one base runner through two, and then recording two quick outs in the 3rd, but a walk and a then an error by Cam Balego opened the doors for a big inning. Wilmington would follow up with three straight singles to score three runs, and that would be it.

Top Performers

  • Ryan Kellogg: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 ER, BB, 3 K (L, 2-7, 4.34)
  • Ethan Roberts: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (2.55)
  • Zac Taylor: 1-3, 2B, RBI, CS (1) (.100)
  • Aramis Ademan: 1-3, 2B, R (.224)
  • Grant Fennell: 1-3, BB (.244)

Ethan Roberts (Photo by Stephanie Lynn)

Ethan Roberts (4-3, 2.56 ERA, 11 SV in 52.2 IP, 47/9 K/BB between A/A+) has run his scoreless streak up to 14.2 IP (11 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 16 K) over his last 8 appearances. A 4th round pick last season, Roberts is undersized at 5'11" 170, but was a big game pitcher for Tennessee Tech, and utilizes good breaking pitches to compensate for an average fastball.

South Bend 3, Fort Wayne 0

Game Recap

The Cubs were in good shape after two. Riley Thompson was rolling on the mound, and then a sac fly by Rafelin Lorenzo and an RBI double by Luis Vazquez gave the team a 2-0 lead. The wheels threatened to come off in the 4th when Thompson was tossed from the game for using a foreign substance on the ball. His replacement, Brendon King, would not allow the game to get away though. He came in and fired four shutout innings, and the Cubs would add an insurance run in the 8th as Brian Glowicki came on to complete a two-inning save.

Top Performers

  • Riley Thompson: 3 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 6 K (3.03)
  • Brendon King: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K (W, 5-1, 4.32)
  • Brian Glowicki: 2 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (S, 6, 2.08)
  • Luis Vazquez: 1-3, 2B, RBI (.267)
  • Fidel Mejia: 1-3, R (.232)
  • Andy Weber: 1-4, 3B (.283)

Using a foreign substance will carry an automatic suspension beyond the just getting thrown out of this game, so don't expect to see Riley Thompson take the ball the next time through the rotation. He's been one of the Cubs top starters this season, and was likely in line to receive a late season promotion to Myrtle Beach. So, we'll have to see if the Cubs end up keeping him in South Bend, depending on how long he is out.

Top Performers

  • Grayson Byrd: 2-4, RBI (.239)
  • Pedro Martinez: 0-2, R, 2 BB, 3 SB (7, 8, 9) (.390)
  • Fernando Kelli: 1-4, R, SB (17) (.262)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

We got our first Yovanny Cruz sighting for Eugene this season. He came on in a piggyback role behind starter John Burgmann (2 IP, 5 H, R, 0 BB, 3 K), but it wasn't a successful debut as he gave up 4 runs (2 earned) in 3 innings. Cruz did strike out 5 and only allowed one hit, but 3 walks (along with his own fielding error) came back to haunt him. A breakout prospect in 2018, Cruz was slowed by an injury late in spring training after he reportedly looked good, and has only returned to game action the past few weeks.

It looks like a couple of rehabbing arms are nearing a return to the upper levels. Zach Hedges tossed a shutout inning of relief, but the Cubs have also been working former 3rd rounder Bryan Hudson as a reliever his last few times out. This is a transition that likely suits Hudson well. The tall lefty has had difficulty maintaining consistent mechanics, and walks tend to become an issue as he works deeper into games. Hudson did look sharp in April prior to going down. His curve looked crisper and the ball just seemed be coming out of his hand more freely than in previous years. It no longer appeared like he was fighting himself. His sinker allows him to keep the ball on ground and if he can lock in that curve, he should be tough on left-handed batters, which gives him plenty of utility out of the pen.

  • Foreign substance? Haven't heard that in a while. Better check Giambrone's bat to see if it's corked. Seriously, though, if it's truly a case of Thompson cheating, it a bit of a red flag.

  • Good morning Michael , Is Kris Bryant playing hurt ? He is striking out at balls a foot outside the plate. I contend he is having trouble picking up the ball , or battling an injury.
