Daily Cubs Minors Recap: Alzolay strikes out 7; Roederer and Americaan stay locked in

Game Recap

Eight of the ten starters for Iowa (including DH Mark Zagunis) played for Chicago this season. In fact, the top five guys in the order were all members of the Cubs Opening Day roster. It did not help them in the end. That top five managed just two hits, a double by Zagunis and a single by Albert Almora, while Ben Zobrist, David Bote and Daniel Descalso combined to go 0-for-11. Adbert Alzolay was strong on the mound, punching out seven over 4.2 innings, and the bullpen held firm until the 9th, but Duane Underwood, Jr. did not have a good night, allowing two runs to take the loss.

Top Performers

  • Adbert Alzolay: 4.2 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 7 K (4.70)
  • Dakota Mekkes: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K (4.82)
  • Randy Rosario: 2 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (3.34)
  • Mark Zagunis: 1-3, 2B, R, BB (.293)
  • Taylor Davis: 2-3 (.234)
  • Johnny Field: 1-3, RBI (.239)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Since returning from his biceps issue, Adbert Alzolay has struck out 26 batters in 17.2 innings, while allowing 14 hits and 9 walks. His 4.08 ERA is solid for the PCL, with his 4 home runs allowed being pretty typical, even if it is at a rate slightly higher than before his injury. His stuff looks fine when at its best, but the inconsistency of his secondaries has remained, and the Cubs have slowly built back up his pitch count over his 5 games in August.

Don't expect him to get recalled on September 1st. I have no doubt the Cubs will have him finish out the year in Iowa as a starter, getting as many innings as possible, including a postseason start (hopefully more than one). Once the PCL playoffs wrap up in mid-September Alzolay should rejoin Chicago in a relief role, and perhaps get a spot start if injuries crop up or if the Cubs have a playoff slot locked up.

Lansing 5, South Bend 4 (10 Innings)

Game Recap

Cole Roederer gave the Cubs a two run lead after one on a two-out single that brought home Clayton Daniel and Andy Weber. The two teams would trade runs in the 2nd, but from there South Bend could not get the big hit to add insurance as they went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position until extras.

The relievers made a valiant effort, especially considering the game was a bullpen day with starter Brendan King only pitching into the 4th. Lansing tied the game up 3-3 in the 6th, and then a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the 10th put them up 5-3. The South Bend offense made them work for the victory though. Singles by Nelson Maldonado and Jake Slaughter brought home the inherited runner and put the tying run at 3rd, but Fidel Mejia grounded out to end it.

With two more hits and runs batted in, Cole Roederer (.223/.320/.373) is now batting .321/.441/.536 with 2 homers, 7 runs scored, 8 runs batted in, 6 walks and 2 stolen bases over his last 8 games. The 19-year old outfielder has pretty much alternated up and down months this season, as consistency has eluded him, but when he is seeing the ball well and not trying to do too much with it we see these stretches emerge of the impact play he is capable of. He's now played a 100 games this season, and he is at or near some milestones, having amassed 50 walks (against 103 K), double digit steals (16/20). Roederer is 1 homer shy of reaching the double digit mark, but his 9 long balls do lead the club (Brennen Davis is 2nd with 7 in 48 games, and Chris Morel is 3rd with 6 in 73 games)

Everett 4, Eugene 3

Game Recap

This game was a tale of two innings. Everett jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st off starter Chris Clarke. From there Clarke and the Eugene bullpen would hold Everett down over the next seven innings. Meanwhile, the Emeralds did not manage to get a hit over those first eight innings. It appeared Everett would walk away with an easy win.

But once Yovanny Cuevas opened the 9th with a leadoff walk, the Emeralds offense came to life. Fernando Kelli followed with another walk, and then one out later Edmond Americaan laced a double to left field to drive home both runners. With the tying run in scoring position, Alexander Guerra struck out, but Grayson Byrd came through with a single to drive home Americaan as the the Emeralds completed the comeback rally.

It would prove to be for naught though, because with two on and two out in the bottom of the 9th, Cesar Izturis, Jr., the son of the former Cubs shortstop snuck a grounder through the left side of the infield for the walk-off victory.

Top Performers

  • Brad Deppermann: 2 IP, H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K (0.00)
  • Zach Bryant: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, K (0.00)
  • Edmond Americaan: 1-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI (.279)
  • Yovanny Cuevas: 0-1, R, 2 BB, SB (1) (.031)
  • Fernando Kelli: 0-2, R, BB, HBP, SB (22) (.239)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

If this game was a tale of two innings, its been a tale of two seasons for outfield Yovanny Cuevas. In 24 games down in the AZL he collected 26 hits and drew 15 walks to compile a .329/.459/.544 slash line, but in 14 games with Eugene? He's got one hit. In 32 at-bats. He has been able to continue drawing some walks, but .031 is .031. Hopefully he can turn in around soon.

The Emeralds could also use a boost from Fernando Kelli (.239/.306/.368). The leadoff man had a strong first half (.286/.344/.437) but his bat has cooled off considerably in the second half (.178/.257/.278).

The one outfielder who has been hitting of late is Edmond Americaan (.267/.333/.389). His first half numbers (.246/.317/.349) were pedestrian, bu in 26 games since the NWL All-Star break, the 2nd year outfielder is batting .323/.371/.490.

  • The group of position players that will be moving up, from South Bend to Myrtle Beach, over the next year, appear to offer some hope for the future. There could be a few nice bats in there. I sure hope Brennen Davis hand injury doesn't become a lingering issue.

  • Hey Michael, I was wondering if you've seen any scouting reports, or had any thoughts on some of these DSL guys:
    Jonathan Rodriguez
    Juan Mora
    Nestor Heredia
    Andricson Slavador
    Marco Prieto
    Felix Stevens
    Flemin Bautista
    Ronny Simon
    Samuel Duarte
    Rafael Herrera
    Luis Devers
    Edward Vasquez
    Kelvin Feliz
They all seem to be doing really well............

Michael, I realize that these players are still young but do you think Kelli and Americaan are the higher or lower splits most likely? I know that nothing comes easy and they have to learn so much, but I think both could become implact players (along with Roederer too.)
    Thanks.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Jonathan, I hope I'm wrong. But I wonder what makes you believe that Fernando Kelli could become 'an impact player.

  • I've attended and watched the Cubs since 1955. These white uniforms are the worst in the Cubs history. After this weekend, I hope the Cubs never wear these uniforms again.

  • In reply to ronvet69:

It's not just the Cubs. It's both leagues wearing these white and black uniforms.

  • In reply to ronvet69:

    Agree totally.
