The I-Cubs slugged their way to victory in game one thanks to homers by Johnny Field and Robel Garcia and doubles by Trent Giambrone and Jim Adduci.

Another solid outing by Trevor Clifton in game two went to waste, however, as Iowa was shut out.

  • Luis Vazquez: 1-3, RBI (.232)
  • Christian Donahue: 1-4, 2B, R (.190)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

With Victor Caratini healthy, and Taylor Davis returned to Iowa, Ian Rice got bumped back to Tennessee. He made his first career start in LF on Sunday. Interesting.

The Cubs claimed righty Chandler Shephard off waivers from the Red Sox and assigned him to Tennessee. The 26-year old has had success at the AA and AAA levels the previous few years, but really struggled in 8 games (7 starts) this season (0-5, 10.01) with AAA Pawtucket. With Keegan Thompson still on the shelf, and Erick Leal suffering a setback in his rehab late last week, the Cubs must have felt they needed a little more starting pitching depth. Expect the Cubs to run Shephard back through waivers to get him off the 40-man roster. They had a roster spot to play with since Ben Zobrist is still on the inactive list and does not count toward the 40-man limit at the moment.

Artis would take on insurance runs later. It was the fourth consecutive series win for South Bend.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Andy Weber (.266/.305/.385) is hitting .389 over his last 8 games, which includes 6 multi-hit games.

Weber isn't the only scorching hot bat in the Cubs lineup. Twenty-year old Christopher Morel (.252/.298/.411) is getting it done as well. The uber-aggressive and energetic Morel has been a touch more selective of late and he is driving the ball better as a result. The wiry infielder has plenty of twitchy athleticism in his game. The ball jumps off his bat and he possesses a really strong arm in the field. He is still raw, but we are seeing more frequent glimpses of what he can become.

The runs allowed by Brailyn Marquez came in a three-batter sequence that saw him get out of wack a bit. First a walk, then left one over the plate that got hammered for a triple, and finally a balk to allow the runner on third to score. Outside of that, he was really good, as he has been over his previous two starts as well.

We couldn’t ask more of Marquez thus season. I look forward to each of his starts now and feel he might be doing the best of all our pitching prospects.
