Game Recap

A big Midwest League debut by Brennen Davis was overshadowed by an even bigger day by fellow 2018 draft pick Andy Weber, who tripled, homered and came up just a double shy of the cycle as he drove in four runs. Davis, doubled home a run in his first at bat and scored later in the inning. In the following inning, he singled and scored.

Brennen Davis replaced Nelson Velazquez (7-day IL)

Thanks again Michael. I've been waiting for Davis to appear--he has a lot of upside and I hope his injuries are behind him.
I see also that he replaced Velasquez on the IL. Velasquez is rated as having the most power in the system and yet his # is a 55. That's not great, just above average. Do you think that will influence the Cubs picks in this draft, especially in the early rounds?

  • Michael, how good is Robel Garcia? If the Cubs trade Addison Russell in a Ken Giles or some other relief pitcher trade, could he be the replacement in the infield? Do you think Russell is on the block at this point? Is Russell plus Happ enough for Giles or do the Cubs bite the bullet and sign Kimbrel?

  • Maybe they can include Descalso. He only had one DP today and dropped a throw during a rundown. Surely Joe has a friend who would also love to play Descalso on a regular basis. Starting to become a baseball ethical problem--old, slow, no longer hits but plays most of the time. Is the problem Maddon or the front office who signed this guy for 2 years?

  • I’m with you, I was never on board with this signing. Bote is a better defensive version of Descalso. He was an unnecessary signing, predicated by the fall of Russell. He did get off to a hot start at the plate, but predictably came way back down to earth.

Unfortunately Theo was handcuffed financially, so this was the biggest splash available at the time.
