Cubs in the Off-Season Leagues - Week 14

Good morning! It was a limited week for the Cubs in the off-season leagues, as many teams were eliminated in post-season play. To find out who remains playing and how they fared, take a look at today's report.

Dominican Winter League

Leones del Escogido

The pace in round-robin play continues to be blistering as Escogido remained in the thick of things on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Licey. Ryan Court went 1-for-4 with a triple, a walk, and an RBI while lead-off man Phillip Evans was 0-for-3 with an RBI. Escogido 3 - Licey 2

On Wednesday, there was no resolution among the top three teams in round-robin play as all are tied with 8-6 records following the Leones 2-1 win in ten innings over Orientales. Ryan Court moved down to third in the batting order and went 2-for-5 with a double in the victory. Escogido 2 - Orientales 1, 10 innings

The Lions took a step backwards on Thursday as they lost to rival Este 7-2. Phillip Evans remained at lead-off but moved to left field as he went 1-for-4 with a double in the loss. Este 7 - Escogido 2

Roberto Clemente League

Gigantes de Carolina

Carolina has been struggling to keep up with the competition in the round-robin playoffs of the LBPRC as they lost 9-4 to Mayaguez on Saturday.  Raidel Orta had to take over for a depleted bullpen and allowed an earned run on a solo home run as he tossed two innings to mop up. Mayaguez 9 - Carolina 4

Cardenales de Lara

Luis Lugo

Luis Lugo

Lara had things well in hand on Sunday as they took control of Margarita 6-1. Luis Lugo started the seventh inning and the big lefty fanned two in a scoreless outing. Lara 6 - Margarita 1

As the VWL playoffs moved into the semifinals, the Cardenales were pummeled by 14 hits from Magallanes on Saturday as they lost 4-1. Luis Lugo was about the only effective pitcher for Lara as he allowed only a walk as he pitched a near perfect inning. Magallanes 4 - Lara 1

Navegantes del Magallanes

Magallanes emptied their bullpen on Sunday in an attempt to beat Anzoategui, but their defense was the undoing for the Nav’s as they lost 4-3. Daury Torrez did his part as he only gave up a walk in 0.2 scoreless innings. Anzoategui 4 - Magallanes 3

Australian Baseball League

Brisbane Bandits

Brisbane tried to go toe-to-toe with division leading Canberra on Thursday and came out on the short end 11-6. Left fielder Wynton Bernard went 1-for-5 in the loss. Canberra 11 - Brisbane 6

A doubleheader on Saturday left both Brisbane and Canberra now looking up at Sydney on the divisional leader board as the Bandits defeated the Cavalry 10-3 in Game 1. Wynton Bernard was moved down to sixth in the batting order as the left fielder went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Brisbane 10 - Canberra 3

Geelong-Korea played another wild and woolly game on Thursday, only to have their pitching fail them again as they lost 15-7 to Perth. Kwang-Min Kwon helped ignite the futile comeback attempt by blasting a two-run homer in the third inning and going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Perth 15 - Geelong 7

  • I apologize to the readers of Cubs Den for not being able to continue in conversation last week. I had a relapse of my forearm/wrist condition late on Monday, and had to take a break from my computer use. I will try to answer questions and provide solicited opinions this week to the best of my ability. Thank you all for your support and patience.

  • Get well soon! Good thing you have the Den's top-of-the-line health insurance coverage. Do you also get to use the Den's private jet when you go to see specialists?

  • In reply to wthomson:

No, but they do fly in the specialists to make a house call.

  • In reply to Tom U:

And thank you for your well wishes!

  • I appreciate your efforts, Tom. I know it isn't easy to stay motivated when you're fighting a physical condition.

  • In reply to Cliff1969:

Thank you Cliff. My motivation is still there, it’s just the execution that is difficult.
