Cubs in the Off-Season Leagues - Week 7

Good morning! Week 7 saw some unlikely stars for the Cubs in the off-season leagues, as Vimael Machin and Kwang-Min Kwon were practically unstoppable at the plate. For more information, take a look inside today’s report.

Dominican Winter League

Aguilas Cibaenas

In a close game on Tuesday, pitching mattered as Cibaenas dropped a 3-2 decision to Oriente. Daury Torrez was summoned with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the fifth and allowed both runners to score on a single and a walk as he officially pitched a scoreless inning. Iowa swingman Brad Markey made his winter debut and served up a solo home run as he also pitched an inning. Oriente 3 - Cibaenas 2

The Aguilas put up two runs in the bottom of the ninth on Wednesday to edge out Oriente 6-5. Daury Torrez put the day before behind him as he set down the side in order in the seventh inning. Cibaenas 6 - Oriente 5

Brad Markey

After yielding an early lead to Escogido on Friday, the Eagles continued to chip away as their pitching held in a 3-2 win. Brad Markey had a better second outing as he went 1-2-3 in the sixth with a strikeout. Daury Torrez earned his first win as he set down the side in order and struck out a batter in the eighth inning. Cibaenas 3 - Escogido 2

Saturday was not a good ending of the week for Cibaenas, as they were doubled-up 8-4 by Cibao. Brad Markey recorded one out in the seventh before giving up a solo home run. Daury Torrez then could not get out of the eighth, as he allowed three earned runs on a hit and two walks in 0.2 innings. Cibao 8 - Cibaenas 4

Leones del Escogido

On Tuesday, Escogido scored two middle innings runs and then held on for a 2-1 victory over Este. Batting lead-off and playing first base, Iowa utility player Ryan Court went 1-for-3 in his winter debut. Escogido 2 - Este 1

Escogido pitching was not able to keep up with Este on Wednesday as the Lions lost 6-5. Ryan Court once again was at lead-off and first base, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored in the loss. Este 6 - Escogido 5

After jumping out to an early lead on Friday against Cibaenas, the bats of the Leones went cold in a 3-2 loss. Back in his familiar positions of lead-off and first base, Ryan Court did his best in going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Escogido 2 - Cibaenas 3

The Lions capped off the week on Saturday with a walk-off home run from Luis Liberato in defeating Oriente 5-4. Ryan Court moved down to second in the order and was 2-for-3 with an RBI, stolen base and run scored, but committed two run-producing errors at first base. Escogido 5 - Oriente 4

Mexican Pacific League

Tomateros de Culiacan

On Sunday, the Tomateros were able to manufacture a run in the ninth on a hit batter, stolen base, sacrifice bunt, and a single to get past Mexicali 3-2. Culiacan called on Casey Coleman to hold the Eagles in the top of the ninth and had a strikeout while setting down the side in order to collect his first win of the season. Culiacan 3 - Mexicali 2

Culiacan got all the runs they would need in the first to innings and then held their breath in the ninth for a 3-2 victory over Hermosillo. While Casey Coleman wasn’t sharp, his defense also did not give him help as he allowed an unearned run on two hits as he fanned two in route to his fourteenth save. Culiacan 3 - Hermosillo 2

In a see-saw affair on Friday the Pickers got a walk-off home run from Luis Alfonso Cruz to beat Navojoa 9-8. Casey Coleman set up the drama by allowing a hit and fanning two in a scoreless ninth for his second victory of the week. Culiacan 9 - Navojoa 8

Roberto Clemente League

Criollos de Caguas

Caguas played a doubleheader on Sunday and in Game 1, the Tribe was unable to keep pace with Carolina as they lost 6-4. Raidel Orta, a Cuban national signed by the Cubs and who was 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 31.2 innings in the Arizona Rookie League, started and allowed three earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out a batter in two innings. Vimael Machin started in right field and was 1-for-3 in the loss. Carolina 6 - Caguas 4, Game 1

Vimael Machin

Vimael Machin

Game 2 had a very Cub flavor to it as the Criollos took the nightcap 2-0. Vimael Machin moved over to first base and provided all of the runs for Caguas as his two-run homer was all they would need. Machin ended up 2-for-3 with the home run, two RBI, and a run scored. Zach Hedges got the call to start the game and scattered three hits over five scoreless innings, while former Cub Armando Rivero fanned four in two innings for the save. Caguas 2 - Carolina 0, Game 2

In a make-up game on Tuesday, the Creoles took it on the chin from Santurce in losing 15-5. Caguas called on Raidel Orta to do some heavy lifting as he pitched the final three innings, giving up an earned run and striking out two over that span. Santurce 15 - Caguas 5

On Wednesday, Caguas matched Carolina inning per inning until the end when the Giants edged the Criollos 7-6. Designated hitter Vimael Machin contributed to the cause by thumping a solo home run in the third and going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Carolina 7 - Caguas 6

A six-run third inning was enough on Friday to propel the Criollos to a 9-4 victory over Santurce. Zach Hedges got the start and served up a two-run homer in the second as he went 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and two walks as he had three strikeouts. Vimael Machin continued to provide a big bat as the first baseman was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Caguas 9 - Santurce 4

Pitching and defense dominated on Saturday as Caguas dropped a 1-0 loss to Santurce. Vimael Machin remained a hitting machine as the second baseman was 1-for-4 with a double in the loss. Santurce 1 - Caguas 0

Venzuelan Winter League

Cardenales de Lara

While Lara pounded out ten hits on Sunday, they could not capitalize as they lost to Magallanes 6-1. Yapson Gomez entered with one out in the eighth and allowed an earned run as he pitched an inning. Magallanes 6 - Lara 1

In a battle of the middle innings on Thursday, the Cardinals ended up prevailing over Aragua 6-4. Yapson Gomez entered with two out in the fourth and pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out a batter. Lara 6 - Aragua 4

Lara ended the week on a sour note on Saturday as they failed to score in a 5-0 loss to Anzoategui. While left-hander Yapson Gomez remained a go-to man in the bullpen, the two hits he yielded in the eight led to run as he had a strikeout in 0.1 innings. Anzoategui 5 - Lara 0

Leones del Caracas

Caracas let loose with a seven run sixth inning on Sunday as they blew away La Guaira 8-1. Jeffrey Baez started the game in right field and then moved over to left in the seventh inning and was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the win. Caracas 8 - La Guaira 1

Australian Baseball League

The frustration continued for Geelong on Sunday as they failed to score in losing to Sydney 5-0. The Koreans have only scored four runs in four games to start the season as outfielder Kwang-Min Kwon went 1-for-4 in the loss. Sydney 5 - Geelong 0

Kwang Min Kwon

Kwang Min Kwon

Thursday saw a new series for Geelong-Korea and their first win of the season as they blasted a veteran Perth team 7-1. Right fielder Kwang-Min Kwon was in the center of the action out of the fifth spot in the order, as he went 3-for-3 and belted a two-run homer as he had three RBI and scored two runs. Geelong 7 - Perth 1

Geelong got their first taste of revenge in Friday as they were destroyed by Perth 23-2. Kwang-Min Kwon did his best from right field as he went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the loss. Perth 23 - Geelong 2

It was more of the same for the Koreans on Saturday in their game against Perth as they were pummeled 15-2. Once again, Kwang-Min Kwon did his best by clubbing his third double of the season as he was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Perth 15 - Geelong 2

Iowa utility INF Ryan Court has joined Leones del Escogido and RHP Brad Markey has joined Aguilas Cibaenas of the Dominican Winter League.

  • I have mixed feelings about the pitching prospects pitching so many innings in the "off" season. I hope it helps their development without putting too much wear on young arms. I'm glad to see Brad Markey leading the fashion charge to bring back long sideburns! I lost mine to an Army barber in 1975 and they were out of style by the time I got out.

  • In reply to Cliff1969:

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Their season ended in Sept so they have had a few months off. This is a time to work on things and keep the arms fresh over the winter before heading out in Feb. They are not out there chucking complete games right now. A lot of times it gives them a chance to work on a new pitch in a game situation to see how hitters react to it and how they can command it.

  • In reply to Cliff1969:

I wouldn’t worry about these fringey prospects getting in some marginal innings. During the regular minor league season they control the pitchers innings & pitch counts so much anyway. But I’m with you in that it hopefully helps their development.

I'd like to see Chatwood get some innings in. I'm kind of surprised he isn't in one of the leagues.

  • In reply to Theodore Anderson:

Probably because he's making $13 M for the next two years on his guaranteed contract. Do you think he wants to go to Venezuela or the Dominican leaving his wife and year old baby. Think these leagues are for youngsters looking for a break. Understand your point though.

  • Is Daury Torres still in the system? Did he resign or is he still a MiLB free agent?

  • In reply to Gator:

He is a free agent. Several of the players listed in these recaps are free agents, but since they haven't signed elsewhere yet Tom and I decided to keep including them.

  • In reply to Michael Ernst:

It has been policy for this article that all players who played in the Cubs' system the previous year, who were not released outright, are covered until they sign elsewhere.
