Opposing pitcher

Scouting Report from Brooks Baseball.

Trevor WilliamsTrevor Williams has thrown 5,258 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2016 and 2018, all of them occuring in the MLB Regular Season. In 2018, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (92mph), also mixing in a Sinker (89mph), Slider(82mph) and Change (84mph). He also rarely throws a Curve (76mph).

His fourseam fastball has less armside movement than typical, has some natural sinking action and has essentially average velo. His sinker has below average velo, generates more whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' sinkers and has some natural sinking action. His slider has short glove-side cut and has some two-plane movement. His change generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' changeups. His curve (take this with a grain of salt because he's only thrown 6 of them in 2018) is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' curves, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' curves, has little depth and has slightly below average velo.

Sean's Note: Williams has been outstanding for the Pirates this season. He has a very low strike out rate but also a very low home run rate. He has a batting average on balls in play well below league average, so luck is probably also a factor in his 3.04 ERA. He has no big splits, right handed and left handed hitters have almost identical numbers against him. The Cubs have been baffled by Williams scoring just two runs in 13 innings against him this season.

Final Thoughts: The Cubs barely hung on to beat the Pirates in extra innings on Wednesday. The win kept the Northsiders in first by only a half game over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers are off Thursday, so the outcome of the game will either give the Cubs a full game lead or lead to a tie in the standings. Jon Lester has made numerous big starts in his career, so the pressure won't be an issue. Chicago showed some offensive life on Wednesday, it will be hard to score against the stingy Williams.

  • To me this game the pivotal one for winning the division. Go into the weekend with a 1 game lead and we win the central. Lose tonight and it is very foggy. With Monty on Sunday.

Watch wade Davis today. He set the single season Rockies record for saves with 42. It would be nice if we had that. Was Theo worried about over paying ? If so it been worth it over some others that we wasted money on.

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

The Cubs overpaid for pitching with mixed results. The Cubs should have overpaid for Christian Yellich and worried about their other prospects later.
I hope in the future the Cubs focus on increasing team speed with more athletic players.

  • In reply to ronvet69:

Where do u put him? Coming into the season we had a stock pile of outfielders.

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

Put him in left field where you should put a decent left fielder.

  • In reply to ronvet69:

Who would you have traded for Yelich? Brewers had and have more appealing prospects?

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

If Morrow doesn’t live on the DL he would be the Davis equivalent.

  • In reply to stix:

Morrow has been on the DL every year so that isn’t a shock.

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

    Davis is declining , k's per 9 decreased,hits per 9 increasing,hr's per 9 increased,his era is 4.20 and he's blown 6 saves. I didn't want him back especially for 3 years.

  • In reply to bolla:

I don’t like any closer for 3 years. 2 at most wasn’t sure what his contract issue was. But I also don’t like signing a guy because already had TJ surgery.

  • In reply to bolla:

But he has 42 saves. Era for closer can get blown up from 3-4 bad outings.

  • fb_avatar

Last night Albert A came through and drove in the winning run yet he is on the bench tonight. Most probably Happ is in there because he is a switch hitter, but I want him to play.
Another very important game. Maybe we have to lead 10-0 in the
8th inning for me to feel comfortable.
    Let's Go Cubs.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

    AA 0-2 vs starter Happ 5-14.sabermetrics ???

  • Jon Jon....we NEED ja tonight!

    Come on boys!

  • Where did the regular season go? Feels like postseason ball, doesn't it? I know it's not, but I just listened to interviews with Maddon and Hickey about strategy for tonight's game, and they are preparing like it is. All hands on deck from here on out.

    Go Cubs!

  • They were saying on the pre game lester would start a wild card game.Lol NO!! Hendricks should start a hypothetical wc game/game 1.

  • In reply to bolla:

Agreed I don't think Lester is 100% his velocity was down in the 89-90 range that last start vs the white sox I don't trust him at this moment in time although I'd love if he proved me wrong

  • In reply to bolla:

Hendricks would be on 3 days rest. It would be Q’s turn in rotation but Lester would at least be on 4 days rest

  • fb_avatar

Lester has to come through tonight. He’s our ace and aces win. Ok, now 2 outs but he’s thrown a lot of pitches, although I’ve noticed that many times he has a rough first and then settles down and eventually guts it out and goes 6 innings.
    Thank you Jon!!

  • Lol!!! marte pulled a lonnie chisenhall

  • Good running Schwarbs

  • fb_avatar

Schwarber should have been on 2nd and driven home by Happ. A gift hit to Schwarber but we don’t have to give it back.

  • Yea bote!!!!

  • BOTE!!!!

  • fb_avatar

With his defense if Bote starts hitting we can do some damage, and with Baez and Bote at SS and 3rd that’s a great defensive left side of the infield.

  • We needed those runs. They made a mistake and we cashed it in, although Schwarber gets an "F" for effort. Some quick innings for Lester would be nice. He's already around 50 pitches through 2 IP, and we used what big guns we have left in the pen last night. Hickey was asked before the game if Chavez would be available and he basically said maybe. Settle in, Big Jon, and let's get some (more) runs!

  • WE GOT CERVELLI OUT!!!

    WE GOT CERVELLI OUT!!!

  • In reply to rbrucato:

OMG..........I was thinking the same thing.

  • Bryant is decent at third but I gotta say Bote looks like potential GG material there....

  • In reply to Wickdipper:

Yes, Bote looks very good at 3rd.

  • fb_avatar

Was listening to Pat n Ron, but just got home. I guess I missed a nice clutch 2 Bote liner!

Lets go boys. Got to get Willson going

Should the Schwarbenator had a double on the Marte misplay/drop ?

Was he not respecting 90 or just slow?

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

It was a can of corn fly out that Marte thought the RF was going to catch or ??? Regardless, it was one of those where Schwarber should have ran, but it's hard to be upset bc it really was an easy out (or should have been).

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Eh, you ALWAYS run, and that play is the perfect example why. It turned out OK, but it may not have. Plays like that can win and lose ballgames.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

I agree 100% but I've been very hard on him this year and I didn't want to beat a dead horse so I tired to be nice. Ha.

  • In reply to INSaluki:

    Schwarber says "thank you".

  • Javy walked on ball 5, but hey, he walked. He's been doing that more often lately.

  • Jon could have had a quick inning here but nibbled around with the pitcher and now is in trouble and is sitting at 80 pitches in the 4th inning. Ugh.

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Awful. Dude couldn’t put away the pitcher. He is on fumes.

  • In reply to rbrucato:

Yes, but the fact that he hasn't had command all night and still hasn't given up a run yet despite being in trouble ALL night. A very gutsy performance so far.

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Nibbling doesn’t constitute pitches in the zone. More in the zone then out.

  • How do you send Contreras when he wasn't even at 3rd base yet when the OF had the ball ready to throw?

  • fb_avatar

    We need that KO blow.

Just too much traffic for us to only have 3 runs

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

Absolutely, Proper base running would have yielded two more runs.

  • fb_avatar

Was hoping for the Offense to step up so we don't need a big performance from the pen after yesterdays managerial debacle.

I don't know how many more outs Jon has in that arm. 3 ? 5?

  • Congrads to the Cubbies ! Over 3 million in attendance again this year !

  • okay so the Cubs have TWO hits tonight that should have been outs which is why I will argue with anyone that a KO is not the same as any other out. If you put the bat on the ball, you have a much better chance of reaching base. Javy is doing a much better job of just getting the bat on the ball this year. Noticeably.

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Now you need to get Schwarbs to notice !
Why didn't Joe pull Lester and put in Edwards ?

  • In reply to ronvet69:

I don't understand that question. Humor? Sarcasm?

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

If you don't understand, watch the 8th inning. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut.
The comment was made because Joe pulled Q last night with 75 pitches, and it almost cost the Cubs . the ballgame.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to ronvet69:

Because he learned something from yesterday. Thats all we can hope.

Plus he usually has the longest leash w Lester ( which he's earned, but I would argue Hendricks has too)

  • Baez is amazing. Flinch, and he notices.

  • fb_avatar

I said earlier that after the 1st Lester usually finds his grove and he did and lasted 6 innings. That’s being mentally tough.
Bote and Baez make a great left side of the infield. Win today and 2 of the next 3 and we’ll have the Central.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Actually we tie in that scenario if the Brew sweep the Tigers. Unless your assuming the Tigers will get at least 1 win this weekend?

I am conflicted whether I would rather lose the division vs tie and play that game Monday where loser plays Tuesday.

You just don't want to play that wild card game so i guess the tie would be better then losing the division in 162 games. Lets just sweep those dead birds who are reeling. If we can beat them tomorrow, I think we shall sweep and the division is ours.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

Jim, I just don’t see Milw sweep Detroit. They’ve impressed the heck out of me this year, but having swept StL I think they lose at least 1. Of course, I never bet because I don’t do very well in forecasting the future.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

I figured thats what u meant, but I just wanted to clarify for those that may not know exactly whats needed.

I think the Tigers should be able to steal one, but you never know w momentum. Esp if the bats for the Brewers stay hot.

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

Jim,I agree, the Brewers might be in for a let down after sweeping the Cardinals.

  • fb_avatar

Got to believe Joe learned something from last night as he let Jon throw that 6th vs taking him out.

Thats all we can ask from him.

  • fb_avatar

    Gore time? I would.

  • fb_avatar

6 more outs and the Brew Crew have no margin for error as long as we win the series vs the Cards.

  • The comment section is pleasant tonight, and I don't think it's only because we're winning. I enjoy that.

  • Edwards warming up is a scary sight.Don't know what to think

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to bolla:

I’d like to have a 5 run lead with one to go to feel comfortable with CJ.
I couldn’t imagine us last year saying I would rather see Wilson than CJ pitch in a high leverage situation.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

    Lol yea exactly

  • fb_avatar

    Some "Numbers to shoot for"

Need to get 3 more rbi for Rizzo.

1 more HR for Willy, and Zorilla to get to double digits.

1 triple for Javy to get to double digits,
1 more double for 40, 1 more run for 100

1 more double for Bote to get to double digits

  • Big double play! We needed that.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to BarleyPop:

Good for CJE. After that Bote error after his walk, things could have spiraled downward quickly for him.

We need the good CJE to have any chance to make some noise in the playoffs.

  • I love CJ Edwards but I simply don't know what happened to him. Luckily he's either on or off (like Q) so Joe should have someone ready to come in every time he comes in the game.

  • Wooooo exhales

  • That was HUGE for CJ & the Cubs. Pitching around a leadoff walk & error. We really need him to be good to go anywhere in the postseason

  • Little bit of drama for Edwards there, but he did it. Hopefully that gives him a bit of confidence. He'll only get another chance or two to prove himself. We can really use good Carl.

  • fb_avatar

    It’s Gore time!!

  • Gore for President !

  • In reply to ronvet69:

He’s so fast, he created Gorebal warming & lightning fast internet...

  • Who would have guessed Chavez would be such a huge, impactful addition?

  • fb_avatar

    Go Chavez Go.

Boy his stuff looked harder n faster then 92-94

He seemed a little amped up........ Guess most pitchers would be in save situations

  • Yeah, baby! I believe!

  • Still going to be hard with the Brew Crew getting 3 EASY games this weekend and the Cubs having to battle a playoff hungry team. But I'd rather be up one game right now !!! Go Cubs !!!!!!

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Its hard to predict ! The Pirates beat the Brewers 12 times this year, so anything can happen. GO CUBS !

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Pressures on the Brewers... They’re the ones that are a game back. They have to win out just to have a shot at the division.
