Opposing pitcher

Scouting Report from Brooks Baseball.

Lucas GiolitoLucas Giolito has thrown 4,003 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2014 and 2018, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season and Spring Training. In 2018, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (93mph), also mixing in a Sinker (93mph), Change (82mph), Slider (84mph) and Curve (79mph).

His fourseam fastball has essentially average velo. His sinker is a prototypical pitch with few remarkable qualities. His change has slightly below average velo. His slider is a prototypical pitch with few remarkable qualities. His curve generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' curves and has a sharp downward bite.

Sean's Note: Giolito has a high walk rate and a below average strike out rate. Left handed hitters fare much better against him than right handers. He shut down the Cubs at Wrigley this year in a lopsided Sox win.

Final Thoughts: The Brewers are closing in on the Cubs, just 1.5 games back now. Efforts like Friday aren't going to cut it. Mike Freeman joined the team for increased infield depth. Jon Lester has been very good of late, Chicago will need another good effort from big Jon.

  • DirtyBirds won, Braves clinched, and Mike Freeman. Real baseball. That feels better.

    Go Cubs!

  • fb_avatar

I feel better with Bote at 3rd. He’s a great defensive player and I believe he will hit today.
If Golito has a high walk rate then we need to get back to the 2016 Cubs and take a lot of pitches. Remember when opposing pitchers would be out by the 3rd or 4th inn? That’s what we’ve lost. We aren’t wearing them down and it’s time to start again.
This is one of the most important games of the season.
    Go Cubs!!

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Ah, the good old days. I remember joking in 2016 of how the following team on our opponent's schedule should pay us for wearing out their pen. We'd all watch with delight as the pitch count hit 60, 70, even 80 in the 3rd. In my best Jean Stapleton voice:

"Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
    Those were the days."

And what should be a standard note in any game-time comment: El Mago!!

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

I agree with Bote at 3rd base. Watching KB at the plate these last few games, I wonder if KB is having trouble seeing the ball.

  • Always a good sign when baez homers! That was a rocket

  • In reply to bolla:

I saw a neat factoid today: Javy is the first player in the history of baseball to hit 30+ HRs while playing 20 or more games at 2B, SS, and 3B.

Think about that. The history of baseball. They've been playing this game for a little while. Nobody has ever done what he does. I often call him a unicorn, and that is the reason why. He is a package of talent that is mythical, rumored of but never seen or proven.

    In reply to BarleyPop:

Yes that is PHENOMENAL....... but you know how it was back in the day. If a player was hitting well......" Dont move him, don't mess with him, keep him right where he is"

So naturally you didn't see any of the good players changes positions much. Oh how times have changed.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

Yea this will help his mvp case, same thing happened for bryant in 2016 playing multiple positions.

  • I think Baez's throw went higher then his home run.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to 2016 Cubs:

Thats a good one.......Plus you may be right.

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

Plus the extra pitches Lester had to throw !

  • fb_avatar

These are MVP clinching days for Javy. If he can come through like he did in the first inning he will be the MVP.
dadgumit! The Sox scored. Can't we get a clean inning after scoring?

  • fb_avatar

Poor Lester........That infield single was a gift plus Javy's throw didn't go into the stands...... then I don't know how murphy didn't know down Avi's single up the middle. Sox prob score w sac fly but still

Lot of early breaks going Sox way....

  • fb_avatar

Beautiful play by Javy to end the 1st.

Wow those were some bad swings by Heyward and Willy.

    Schwarbernator didn't look right either

  • Great play by Baez there!!!! Wish Murphy would have kept ball in the infield.

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

I'm outside and on the radio, so I haven't seen the defensive plays. But I have braced myself for the defensive shortcomings of Murphy. I'm a run-prevention guy and offense secondary. I love his bat but that range, glove, and arm will give me heartburn, especially in a late-inning, tight postseason game.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

Murphy is definitely weak at 2B. If you missed it though, the Sox scored their run as a result of a Baez error. He did hit a low screaming HR in the first though so I guess that's okay.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

I agree with you. Ball wasn’t hit very hard and he miss dove it.

  • It seems like the higher the opposing pitchers ERA is the worst the Cubs hit.

  • lester is laboring more than giolito, vs a much worse line up and giolito sucks!!

  • Giolito has found his groove and the bottom of this Cubs lineup is woeful with Contreras struggling, Schwarber hitting like he does (under .240) and Bote having long since come back to Earth. I really thought the division was in hand but now I think it's up for grabs. If the Cubs lose 2 of 3 or get swept here, they are in serious trouble !!!!!!!!

  • In reply to INSaluki:

I wish the Cubs would admit their mistake drafting Schwarber to a National league team. This guy is an American league player.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to INSaluki:

Yuck....... it looks like your right.......... Pretty sick as we used to see pitchers w pc in the 40's sometimes in the 2nd and 3rd innings.

    48 or 49 pitches thru 4.........

Pretty surprising for a guy who walked 7 cubs last time he faced us.

  • In reply to INSaluki:

No one said this would be easy. There are many other teams trying to win. I think it's the fight that builds character. People remember 2016 as easy, but the Tribe took us to the 10th inning of Game 7. None of this is easy.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

Barley, you are correct. I know the Sox are doing everything in their power to win this series as it DOES mean more to them than other games (whether they'd admit it or not). And I, at least, do not recall the playoffs or WS in 2016 as being easy, just the regular season.

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Put the cart ahead of the horse there a bit bub.....

  • fb_avatar

We have to pressure Milw and that’s by winning. Up 2-0 and they’re back in the game and Lester is throwing a lot of pitches. Giolito hadn’t thrown many and our hitters our looking at his pitches go right down the center of the plate. Rizzo did that last inning. I would let Murphy bat once more and then get defense in there—if we can’t score maybe we can prevent a run of theirs to score.

  • How can Murphy's hit to the outfield be scored as a double.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to 2016 Cubs:

Because they don't give mental errors. I had to get this explained to me by a coach in high school. Since the OF didn't touch it, no error

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

It wasn’t a mental mistake. It was a physical mistake. He completely misplayed it. But understand the fact he didn’t touch it.

  • fb_avatar

Horrible OF defense and Zorilla has given us a mini spark. Lets keep it going

    5-2 good guys

  • fb_avatar

Go Zo! How about another Javy? We’re in a perfect position, we need Lester to shut them down in the bottom of the 5th and let our relievers take over.
    Still 2-0 Pittsburgh.

  • fb_avatar

That’s way I don’t like the umps calling them. 2 balls were called strikes and 1 strike called a ball.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Who wants the robo ump ! Raise your hands !

  • fb_avatar

Time to step up KB......Walking Rizzo to get to you

  • fb_avatar

I said earlier to let Murphy bat and then get him out of there. We’d be out of the inn and how many more pitches does Lester throw?

  • fb_avatar

Hope we see the CJE back tonight !!

  • fb_avatar

    Tomorrow I’d have Murphy DH.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Great idea ! Why not ?

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to ronvet69:

    We see it—why doesn’t Joe?

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Because he is too busy watching the game !

  • Lester threw a clunker just like quintana, thank goodness the cubs have more runs today.

  • In reply to bolla:

Yes, but hold everything, Stringbean is getting the 6th.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to bolla:

Not defending Q but the wind was blowing out hard yesterday and neither Lester or Q got much help from the D.

Lets put up 1 more crooked number and win the series tomorrow !

  • Are you even a cubs fan? You are the most negative person!

  • In reply to Oldno7:

Sorry. You got me. I am a DirtyBird-loving fake Cubs fan.

  • fb_avatar

Good reporting Kelly. Willson looks like a different hitter.

  • fb_avatar

6 more outs in Milwaukee....... Can the Pirates shut out the Brewers?

Eyes open Joe.....>CJE just walked a guy

  • Come on CJE, we need you !!!!!!!!!!

  • Most Cubs fans don't know Daniel Pakla very well. He wasn't a highly touted prospect or anything flashy, but his numbers are comparable to, if not better than, Schwarbers.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to INSaluki:

Hes a very very thick dude w guns, but he doesn't walk like the Schwarbenator. Otherwise I guess pretty similar.

  • fb_avatar

Way to come back after the walk CJE !!

  • There you go edwards!! curveball was snapping tonight

  • fb_avatar

Williams out...... up to Pirates BP if we want to get that game back.

  • Piartes up 3-0 runners on 1st and 3rd 1 out bottom of the 8th

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to bolla:

You took the words right off my phone!
Chavez was a great signing! He didn’t throw that many pitches, I’d let him go another.

  • Who would have guessed in April that at the end of September, with the division on the line, that Cole Hamels may be our best starter, Jesse Chavez our best reliever, and Daniel Murphy our second baseman. Gosh I love baseball.

Bucs put up another run. 3-0 Pirates over the Crew in the bottom of the 8th.

  • Three more outs in Pittsburg, go Bucs ! Is Kris Bryant having trouble seeing the ball at the plate ? He doesn't look like himself taking pitches down the middle of the plate.

  • fb_avatar

  • fb_avatar

    Final 3-0 Pirates

  • Brewers lose. Dust off that abacus, Norway. I know it's gathered some cobwebs the last few days, but we got some 'rithmatic to do tonight.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

Our friend in Norway uses a sliderule.

  • In reply to DropThePuck:

Right? We got some dude halfway around the world, in a historic Nordic country, keeping us abreast of our up-to-the-minute complex mathematical equations. I'm sure Google or a digital calculator would work, but an abacus or sliderule sounds much more romantic.

  • FLASH!!!!

  • Gore is a serious weapon, I wish he could make the postseason roster.

Infield in, grounder to the 3rd baseman and STILL beat the throw.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to bolla:

I think he will. We will take at least one starter off and Gore is a difference maker. Joe loves speed and I believe he’ll be on it.

  • El Mago... You Go, We Go !!!

  • I know I sound like a broken record, but do you realize how close Javy is to a triple crown? Too little, too late on the batting title, but damn!

  • Why would javy slide with arms out???? With instant replay every move is caught and seen. Why risk that?

  • I bet West said something to Anderson to piss him off. Joe West has to go after this year.

  • In reply to 2016 Cubs:

After this year ? Should have been about 5 years ago !

  • fb_avatar

It’s a little after 4:30 Sunday morning in Oslo. Do you think Norway is up and watching? We expect your figuring pretty soon.
