Game Recap

After hitting an 8th inning game-winning homer in series opener on Sunday, Levi Jordan got the Emeralds on the board with a two-run double in the 1st. Thanks to the pitching staff these would ultimately prove to to be the winning runs.

Eugene would tack on one more run on a Grant Fennell RBI single.

Left hander Jack Patterson took the hill in the bottom of the 1st with a three-run lead and blew through the Spokane order the first time through. He ran into some problems in the 4th as Spokane loaded the bases with two outs, but Patterson punched out his third batter of the game, all of which came in the 4th, to get out of it.

From there the red-hot Emeralds bullpen carried the torch. Eugenio Palma fired three scoreless innings and NWL All-Star Sean Barry finished off Spokane with a pair of perfect innings to preserve the win and the shutout. They received a little late inning assistance from Andy Weber, who not only knocked home an insurance run in the 7th, but made a nice diving snag in the 8th behind Barry.

  • Thanks again Michael, I will miss the minors recaps very soon. At least we have the AFL starting soon. Have the Cubs finalized the roster yet?

  • In reply to CubFanStuckInStl:

Yes, the AFL roster is finalized:
    SS Nico Hoerner
    2B Trent Giambrone
    C P.J. Higgins
    C Jhonny Pereda
    OF D.J. Wilson
    RHP Bailey Clark
    LHP Manuel Rondon
RHP Erick Leal (which means he signed a successor contract for 2019)

  • In reply to Michael Ernst:

Hoerner and Pereda are on the taxi squad, so they are only eligible to participate in games on certain days.

  • In reply to Michael Ernst:

    Justin Steele also going

Thanks Michael. These recaps are so beneficial to us, I certainly look forward to them every morning.
The Emeralds have some talent and it will be interesting following them in the years to come.
I know one of my favorites, Fernando Kelli, didn't hit that well, but maybe with a year to acclimate he'll do better next year. How is his defense and his arm?

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Kelli gets by with speed, even on defense. His routes are not great and his arm seems fine, but nothing special. He should be able to stick in CF. I assume he will improve enough that he eventually ends up above average out there.

  • Go Green!!
