Iowa 4, Oklahoma City 3 (11 Innings)

Game Recap

Iowa managed only seven hits in the game, but made the most of them, as they were grouped four of the hits came from Stephen Bruno and Mike Freeman who were back-to-back in the Cubs order and then another two, including a solo home run from Jacob Hannemann.

On the mound, Alec Mills struck out seven over six innings. Craig Brooks and James Norwood combined to strikeout five over four combined shutout innings to finish off the game.

Top Performers

  • Jacob Hannemann: 2-5, HR (4), R, RBI (.226)
  • Mike Freeman: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB (.271)
  • Stephen Bruno: 2-4, 2 R, HBP (.239)
  • Alec Mills: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K (4.84)
  • Craig Brooks: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K (4.19)
  • James Norwood: 2 IP, BB, 3 K (1.10)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Mike Freeman (.271/.315/.392) has two hits in each of two games back with Iowa.

Few pitchers in the system have taken the type of step forward that James Norwood has this season. He is regularly hitting 97-98 on the gun after sitting more in the 94-96 range previously. His slider and changeup have also become more consistent. Command and control can still waver a bit at times, but with his stuff, neither have to be top notch. He has dominated since joining Iowa, striking out 32.3% of the batters he has faced. The 10.8% walk rate does need to improve a bit and the .229 BABIP is not sustainable, so I wouldn't expect the 1.10 ERA to remain, but he is definitely positioning himself as a viable option for the Chicago pen in 2019 alongside Dillon Maples and Dakota Mekkes.

  • Ryan Williams: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, BB, 2 K (5.53)
  • Brian Glowicki: 2 IP, H, 4 K (1.19)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

No relief pitcher has been more valuable to any staff in the Cubs system more so than 2017 10th round pick Brian Glowicki (60.1 IP, 47 H, 8 ER, 22 BB, 59 K). The former Minnesota Golden Gophers closer has appeared in 40 games to the tune of a 1.19 ERA and 16 saves in 19 opportunities. It is also unlikely anyone has had to pitch through such rough luck with the defense behind him. While Glowicki has yielded just 8 earned runs, there have been an additional 14 unearned runs scored while he has been on the mound.

Thanks again Michael. I'm going to miss these when the minors are finished.
It seems like our bullpen is shaping up pretty well for the next few years with Norwood, Maples and Mekkes coming and all are fairly young. I've not heard of Glowicki before--this is why we read these.
If Morrow can't return, do you see the Cubs having one of the 3 Iowa relievers come up and replace Chatwood or Wilson?

  • Interested in a scouting report on Glowicki.
