Omaha 7, Iowa 6

Game Recap

The score was essentially meaningless in this game as all eyes focused on a rehabbing big leaguer. Tyler Chatwood took the mound, and while the overall line looked very Tyler Chatwood like, there were some positives:

-wait, was there a bigger attraction in this one?

Oh yeah, the guy David Bote made us forget just missed a home run in his first AB (Bote would have managed to cut through the wind I'm sure). He lined a ball to left in his second AB that was dropped, allowing him to reach. He drew a seven-pitch walk his next time up before a swinging strikeout ended his night.

Top Performers

  • Mike Freeman: 2-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI, BB (.279)
  • Chris Coghlan: 1-3, R, BB (.217)
  • Ryan Court: 0-1, R, RBI, 2 BB, 2 HBP (.270)
  • Not David Bote: 0-3, 2 R, BB (.000 )
  • Tyler Chatwood: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 3 K (77 P, 39 S)
  • Rob Zastryzny: 1.2 IP, 2 H, R, 0 ER, 2 K (3.83)
  • Dakota Mekkes: IP, H, 3 K (1.53)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Along with Kyle Ryan, the two arms in the Iowa pen pitching the best right now are Rob Zastryzny (13 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 12 K in August) and Dakota Mekkes (8 IP, 7 H, R, 4 BB, 11 K). Allen Webster gave up a home run in his last outing, but was pitching very well for Tennessee and still looks like a potential 40-man roster add along with Kyle Ryan. It will be interesting to see if the team makes room for Mekkes as well. With some of the other righties struggling, and Brandon Morrow still a question, it isn't as far fetched to me as it was even a few weeks ago.

Tennessee 3, Montgomery 1

Game Recap

I only caught bits and pieces of this game, but every time I turned it on, Michael Rucker would give up hits or walks. Since he only allowed six base runners over five innings, I can only assume he was really good when I wasn't watching. Zach Hedges and Wyatt Short continued his good work with four shutout innings to finish off the game.

Trent Giambrone launched his 17th home run of the season on a hanging breaking ball to tie the game at 1-1 in the 7th.

Top Performers

  • Michael Rucker: 5 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 3 K (3.74)
  • Zach Hedges: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 K (2.43)
  • Wyatt Short: 1.1 IP, K (W, 4-3, 3.67)
  • Trent Giambrone: 1-3, HR (17), R, RBI, BB (.256)
  • Jeffrey Baez: 1-3, 2B, R, BB (.264)
  • Eddy Martinez: 2-4, RBI (.223)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Since returning from the DL in Mid-August, Trent Giambrone (.256/.335/.456) has drawn 13 walks in 13 games. His power numbers have been down, but his home run Monday was his first extra base hit so hopefully that will get him going. He is now batting .250/.440/.333 this month.

Advanced A

Buies Creek 3, Myrtle Beach 2 (10 Innings)

Game Recap

Alex Lange got off to a fast start and finished with a quality start, but could not hold on to an early 2-0 lead provided on three consecutive hits by Jared Young, Christian Donahue, Roberto Caro, and a sacrifice fly by Zach Davis. Despite surrendering just five hits on the night, the Pelicans would eventually drop the game in extras.

Top Performers

  • Alex Lange: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K (3.73)
  • Ryan Kellogg: 2 IP, H, BB, 2 K (3.52)
  • Jared Young: 1-3, 2B, R, BB (.285)
  • Aramis Ademan: 2-5, 2B (.208)
  • Roberto Caro: 2-4 (.296)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Fort Wayne 15, South Bend 5

Game Recap

Austin Upshaw finished the game on the mound for South Bend. I'm not sure more needs to be said.

Top Performers

  • Delvin Zinn: 2-3, R, BB (.294)
  • Jimmy Herron: 2-4, 2 RBI (.253)
  • Cam Balego: 1-3, R, HBP (.241)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Delvin Zinn (.294/.341/.335) is riding a 9-game hitting streak (.467) and is batting .333/.419/.410 in August.

Tri-City 13, Eugene 0

Game Recap

I can't. Not when another position player finishes the game on the mound.

Top Performers

  • Zach Mort: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, BB, K (L, 0-4, 5.88)
  • Luke Reynolds: 1-2, 2B (.294)
  • Luis Vazquez: 1-2, BB (.185)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Not even Riley McCauley (15 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 8 BB, 18 K combined between R/A-) could withstand the Tri-City onslaught in this one. McCauley had not allowed a run over his first 14 pro innings before allowing a 2-run homer in his 1 inning of work Monday.

His 2-game homer streak may have ended, but Nelson Velazquez (.226/.294/.359 overall between A-/A) did extend his modest 4-game hitting streak. His 2nd half numbers (.262/.347/.458) are more in line with what we had hoped for throughout the season as are his 9 home runs since joining Eugene. He also swiped his 15th bag in 19 overall attempts between South Bend and Eugene.

Cubs1 3, Indians1 2

  • Rafael Mejia: 1-3, HR (8), R, RBI (.315)

  • Luis Diaz: 1-3, RBI, SB (6) (.311)
  • Raymond Pena: 2-4 (.357)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

The Cubs2 (28-25) were eliminated from playoff contention with their loss in the morning. The Cubs1 (38-18) squad, however, clinched home field with their win in the afternoon.

  • Eugene beat Eugene : )

Don't worry Eugene, I beat myself up on the golf course all the time!

  • In reply to KJRyno:

    Thanks. I fixed it.

  • In reply to Michael Ernst:

Nice to see Blake Whitney sighting. My boy coached him in college the last two years. I enjoyed watching him on my trips down to the Carolina's to get out of the Illinois cold.

  • In reply to KJRyno:

    Ha ha, me also.

  • In reply to cubbustible:

Hey KJRyno and cubbustible - where in Carolina do you go? I moved in May from Chicago to Charlotte and other than family, a few friends and of course Wrigley, I don't miss it a bit. If you're ever in Charlotte, I wouldn't mind getting together somewhere for a few drinks, if possible.

  • Michael, yes, all of a sudden it seems Meekes has been as good, and as consistent as anyone on the Iowa staff. Hopefully come September he will get his feet wet in Chicago. Would be interesting to see.

I'm going to miss the recaps from the DSL. That means fall is coming, and soon these will be over too. When do the premier players from the DSL come over here--this fall or next spring?
Thanks for all the work Michael.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

They'll come over for Fall Instructs

  • How are rosters for the AZL cubs1 and cubs2 teams created? Are 1 players better than 2 players?

  • Michael- If they were to add Mekkes to the 40-man roster so they can see what he can do in September with the Cubs, who do you think is the odd man out? Is it probably Mazzoni or Tseng? Interesting to see Zastryzny doing well lately. He was very helpful back in 2015.
