Bullpen Usage
The bullpen usage chart wasn't updated after game one, so we're going old school. Mike Mayers threw 23 pitches, Tyler Lyons 17, and Luke Gregerson 32 for St. Louis. Carl Edwards threw 6, Justin Wilson 17, Steve Cishek 3, and Jesse Chavez 21 for the Cubs.

Opposing pitcher

Scouting Report from Brooks Baseball.

John GantJohn Gant has thrown 2,014 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2016 and 2018, all of them occuring in the MLB Regular Season. In 2018, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (94mph) and Change (82mph), also mixing in a Curve (77mph) and Slider (84mph).

His fourseam fastball has an obvious tail, has some natural sinking action, has essentially average velo and results in somewhat more groundballs compared to other pitchers' fourseamers. His change has slightly below average velo. His curve generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' curves, has a sharp downward bite and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' curves. His slider generates an extremely high number of swings & misses compared to other pitchers' sliders, is an extreme flyball pitch compared to other pitchers' sliders and has primarily 12-6 movement.

Sean's Note: Gant has flashed decent numbers moving between starting and relief roles. He strikes out slightly less than league average, while walking above league average. A high rate of hard contact and a very low (.219) average on balls put in play indicate he has been lucky in 2018.

Final Thoughts: Albert Almora, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, and Willson Contreras are in after sitting out game one. Mike Montgomery has struggled a bit recently after starting well upon entering the rotation. The Cardinals aren't playing the white-hot Matt Carpenter in game two, so that helps quite a bit.

We scored 7 runs in the first game and look who was sitting. We have a really, really strong team and I hope that we keep it that way. We do need more pitching but are we ready to give up someone on the ML team? I know Theo said no, but who knows? I can't think of anyone of our prospects that I'd hate to lose, especially since our recent draft picks aren't available until after the season.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Lots of noise out there from sources that need traffic. We need pitching, and I would bet we nab a SP and a higher-leverage LHRP. But we have no need to deal for anyone with years of control, which will minimize the cost we pay. We have a full rotation locked up for a couple more years, plus Smyly and Alzolay next year. Same with the pen. All the key guys are under contract next season, with numerous options rising to the surface. We only need rentals this year, and between our needs and those available, none will cost any of our young core.

I personally think we get something like Eovaldi and Britton. Both are rentals with high upside but considerable health questions. Both can be had with some combination of minor-leaguers, such as Bote, Alzolay, Amaya, Underwood, etc. Caratini is very valuable and could be in play.

The only way I see us dealing from the ML roster is if there are long-term doubts about Darvish, which there could be. Even then, someone like deGrom or Fulmer would have to be made available. I don't see that in the next week or so.

    In reply to BarleyPop:

Look at what we've done with all the struggles from our SP. If Hendricks or Q can go back to their norm this will be an elite team. Our bullpen is one of the best in baseball, our defense is back to what it was and our offense is among the MLB leaders. Quite an assembly of talent.
As for the first game------ Yes you may.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

    Gosh, I am slacking.

We don't need another starter. We don't need another reliever. But they'd be nice to have. Much like the very satisfying game 1 win, I'll ask politely:

Thank you. May I have another?

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to BarleyPop:

    Yes, you may.

  • Carpenter must be exhausted from running laps around the bases. That's a good thing for the Cubs.

  • This ump is already showing he's gonna be inconsistent.2 balls out the zone(one high to baez, one low to heyward) called strikes

  • Here we go again. Losing after 1 inning. Thank God it’s a lousy team. This has to get fixed before post-season.

  • Montgomery living on the edge.

  • fb_avatar

Who is doing the broadcast with Len tonight?

  • Tom Verducci, its a regional broadcast on Fox, so JD has the night off.

  • Mooney said the cubs are targeting zach britton and are "deeply involved" in trade talks.

  • In reply to bolla:

How has he pitched this year?
Has he tested the Achilles , haven’t heard much about him, hate to give up more young talent for another injury plagued player.

  • In reply to TheSarge#36:

Had a rough start after returning from the injury, hasn't allowed a run in his last 6 appearances and his velocity has gradually went up from 93-94 to 96-97. Orioles scouts were in iowa recently too. There are other teams involved, a deal should happen soon like in the next 2-3 days.

  • In reply to bolla:

Britton could happen at any moment, as could any other deal. I just know I don't want to see Javy pulled out of the game and hugging in the dugout.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

Yanks and dodgers are also after Britton. No shot for the cubs unless they give someone off thev25 man roster for a rental. I hope Thoyer aren’t that deaparate.

  • In reply to stix:

This absolutely false. No one from the mlb team will be traded for britton. Matter of fact jerry crasnick just said astros and cubs are matching up prospects for a britton deal. The price won't be that high for a 2 month rental recovering from an injury. Probably bote and others. But the astros unlike the cubs don't recklessly trade prospects and have plenty that are better so they'll probably get britton.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

You won’t see that happening for over 10 years......

  • Look at Rizzo in the lead-off spot. The GOAT? #firejoemaddon

  • fb_avatar

It seems like everyone is sleepwalking tonight. I don’t feel any energy from either team. Maybe if the Cubs got s few hits in a row and maybe that’s why Joe has started Rizzo several times to get something started.

  • Báez needs to be more concerned about swinging at crap in the dirt than arguing check swings.

  • Ron Coomer: "Somebody needs to throw this umpire out of the game. This is just bad baseball."

That all sucks, but I don't think Javy has ever been ejected. Bad baseball, indeed.

  • Hope this isnt another one of those 1 run games when montgomery picthes good enough but doesn't get enough run support

  • fb_avatar

We’ve had men on and we’re in their bullpen and that’s good news. On their side Carpenter is in. Now we need a big hit. I just get the feeling that if we can get the lead we’ll add on.
Nice error! Take advantage of it.

  • What was schwarber doing man? If the cubs don't score here that will be an epic failure

  • Tie game! I want this sweep so bad. I could do some deep, meaningful lyrics, but I think some simple "Space Truckin'" works about now:

    "Come on...
    Come on...
    Come on..."

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

    "Yeah, yeah, yeah, Space Truckin'!"

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

And this interplanetary Rover needs to run over Matt Carpenter.

  • I know greg holland/boras regrets rejecting that rockies contract offer they eventually gave to davis,he's never gonna get another offer like that

  • In reply to bolla:

Glad the cardinals got him though. Lol

  • In reply to TheSarge#36:

    yea...holland sucks

  • Well, it’s a good thing the Cubs didn’t get Holland..that’s $14m St. Louis might as well have lit on fire and then thrown into the Mississippi (in either order)

  • In reply to JTWilson:

Does that go in the same fire as the 80+M that Fowler got?

  • FFS!!! Someone either put one in Carpenter’s ribs or get the ball out of the middle of the plate. C’mon!!!!

  • ....would have to say Carpenter has Player of the Week wrapped up.

  • Looks like Wilson coming into another high-leverage situation. Just for you, bolla. Enjoy!

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

Strop did his job for him and blew the lead

  • In reply to bolla:

Why was he still out there?

    Baez make that play?

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

I think baez makes that play and strop should of been pulled after walking molina. He wasn't sharp

  • Where the hell is Zobrist playing? That was a routine grounder to straight away second base.

  • Quit freaking nibbling and throw strikes. Jezz.

  • Damn I want this game. I don't know why. I haven't been this stressed all year. Win this game!

  • We can never put the cardinals away. One hit here or there would have done it. But here they come again.

  • Wow I'm shocked!! wilson comes in to face a lefty who is 2-13 vs him in his career and wilson walks him on 4 balls. Shocking

  • 2 run lead with 9 outs to go. Couldn’t get it done. This, if we lose, would be a terrible loss.

  • Justin wilson and high leverage situations are like oil and water. This is why the numbers don't tell the whole story.

  • That sucks, but we got this. We Never Quit.

    Go Cubs!

  • fb_avatar

The words I want to use I can't here.

  • Bullpen just didn’t get it done tonight.

  • What a crappy loss.

  • fb_avatar

Now there's the cubbies I grew up rooting .for. Relief pitcher that they overpaid for walks first 2 batters in a tied game to lead off the inning and the cubs mgr doesn't have the brains to remove him after the first walk. And now the cubs have to rely on tomorrow's pitcher Quintana who won't get thru 2 innings. PANIC TRADE COMING SOON!! Look for Theo to trade Russell or Happ for another broken down reliever like Britton.

  • Most good pitchers pitch to their own strengths but the Cubs pitchers pitch to avoid the batters strengths. Therefore a lot of favorable batters counts and plenty of walks and hits.

  • Don't tell PETA, but I just sacrificed a chicken. And Jobu has a fresh shot of rum. Go Cubs!

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

    BBQ and drinks, anyone?

  • Tough loss the cubs pitching walks way too many batters, I coulda swore bosio was let go because of that.Baez was ejected for no reason too, that was a check swing.

  • In reply to bolla:

  • In reply to bolla:

Tough loss, for sure, and I don't want to sound bitter. The ejection of Javy was B.S. The best player gets ejected in a tight game. No reason for that, except a thin-skinned umpire. I wish there was a way that they could be held accountable.

  • To me, it seemed like the air was let out of the Cubs balloon after Baez got thrown out. When are they going to hold the umpires accountable for their actions?
