Daily Cubs Minors Recap: Giambrone triples and homers; Mekkes and Maples continue dominance

Iowa 8, Reno 7

Game Recap

A bullpen day gave Daury Torrez (4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K) and Brad Markey (2.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB) an opportunity to piggyback and it didn't really go well for either, but thankfully the offense picked up the slack, and it also helped they had Dakota Mekkes and Dillon Maples to slam the door over the final three innings.

Top Performers

  • Mike Freeman: 2-5, 2B, 3 R
  • Taylor Davis: 2-4, 3 RBI, BB
  • Jacob Hannemann: 2-5, R, 2 RBI, SB (11)
  • Bijan Rademacher: 1-3, 2B, R, RBI, BB
  • Mark Zagunis: 2-5, R
  • Dakota Mekkes: 1.2 IP, H, 2 K
  • Dillon Maples: IP, 2 K (S, 5, 3.74)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

A couple of players broke out of extended slumps. Mark Zagunis was on an 0-for-19 streak and Taylor Davis on a 1-for-19. Both collected two hits.

In his last 8 games, Dillon Maples hasn't allowed a run, has walked just 2 and struck out 16 in 8 innings.

Tennessee 6, Montgomery 4

Game Recap

Tennessee jumped out to an early advantage and even though Oscar De La Cruz was hit pretty hard and failed to get through the 5th, the bullpen picked him up and kept the remaining lead safe over the final 4.1 innings.

Top Performers

  • Trent Giambrone: 2-3, 3B, HR (7), 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, SB (14)
  • Daniel Spingola: 1-2, 2 R, BB, HBP, SB (1)
  • Trey Martin: 2-5, 2 2B, RBI
  • Ian Rice: 1-3, 2 R, BB
  • Scott Effross: 1.1 IP, 2 H, K (W, 2-4, 5.01)
  • James Norwood: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K (2.70)
  • Craig Brooks: IP, 2 H, 3 K (S, 5, 2.93)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

For Trent Giambrone, a solid April (.261/.354/.406) was followed by a poor May (.228/.280/.391), but he has bounced back in a big way so far in June (.325/.386/.600).

Advanced A

Winston-Salem 3, Myrtle Beach 2

Game Recap

A team actually hit Cory Abbott pretty hard, which is unusual. In just four innings he allowed eight hits, four went for extra bases. He limited the damage to three runs but it still ended up being too much for the Pelicans offense to overcome.

Top Performers

  • Austin Upshaw: 2-3, 2B, RBI
  • P.J. Higgins: 2-4, R
  • Luis Ayala: 2-3, R
  • Andruw Monasterio: 0-2, 2 BB, SB (6)
  • Casey Bloomquist: 3 IP, 2 H, 2 K (2.06)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Seven hits over the past four games by Austin Upshaw has brought his average up from .195 to .221.

Dayton 2, South Bend 1

Game Recap

Tyler Thomas and the South Bend bullpen was good, the Dayton pitching staff was just a bit better.

Top Performers

  • Tyler Thomas: 4.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, BB, 6 K (L, 2-5, 2.74)
  • Brendan King: 2.1 IP, 5 H, BB, 3 K (3.23)
  • Yapson Gomaez: 2 IP, H, BB, 2 K (4.03)
  • Miguel Amaya: 2-4, 2B
  • Delvin Zinn: 2-4
  • Jhonny Bethencourt: 2-5

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Tyler Thomas continues to have tough luck when it comes to his win-loss record. Part of it is due to the fact he typically doesn't work deep into games but a 2.74 ERA is still a 2.74 ERA. He has allowed more than 2 earned runs on just one occasion.

  • I was cleaning out my inbox this morning, I had found an old Cubs Den link to 2016. It was a post John wrote about the disparity in organizational rankings between different services. It was great to read John's words on Torres & Cease and his optimism on Justin Steele. It was a great opportunity to review how the Org has evolved in 2 years. It was also to read John again. Highly recommended

  • In reply to Gator:

WOW! Sounds great that you really enjoyed the link. Please don't give any more information on where it is except for it was written in 2016. It will be fun for all of us to try and find the link you highly recommend. LOL just kidding.

  • In reply to Gator:

I was finishing up writing a preview for the Emeralds this morning and came to the realization that this was the last batch of players that I will have some of John's old notes and pictures to call upon. The thought has remained with me all day.

  • Nice to see Hannemann still hitting well he also seems to be more aggressive on the base paths this year, especially in the SB department. I could see him making a good 4th-5th OF. Good arm, great D at all 3 OF positions and above average speed/PR. Nice that he also hits from the left side.

  • In reply to CubFanStuckInStl:

I agree. He too has always been kind of streaky. I have to track down some video to see if he has changed his swing to make more contact.

I agree his speed could be a welcome addition. Perhaps my visions of Cardinals stealing bases in my youth has made me overvalue the stolen base but I think smart base stealing could be a disruptor to today's style of play. Joe seems to like to add speed to the team for the playoffs. Maybe if Hannemann keeps it up, he will get a look.

  • In reply to Gator:

I am sure Hannemann will get a look in Sept. He may come up sooner if we have an injury. He is raking right now. Let's see how long he can keep it up.

  • Trent Giambrone has been kind of an enigma to me as I have followed along as a fan. He always seemed super streaky. But if he could be a little more consistent there could be something there. I listen to minor league games often while waiting for my kids at gymnastics. You hear him make a key play. Sometimes his bat remains quiet.

He seems to be in one of those streaks lately that makes the games an exciting listen. In seeing some video, his swing & timing mechanisms are much quieter than last year. He is very short so his arms are extended thru the zone. I wonder if he can handle inside pitches as well but again I am seeing select videos. They seem to be working him all over the diamond. I do not think he will ever be a plus fielder anywhere but he could be a good super utility guy at best.

  • In reply to Gator:

He is definitely streaky, but he has talent. He can get you by at SS, although you wouldn't want to rely on him there for any extended period of time, and has is fine at 2B/3B. There is decent pop in the bat and he has continued to improve his plate discipline. I think the more consistent he becomes in that area the less frequent his slumps will become. There is utility player upside with him.
