Opposing pitchers

Scouting Reports from Brooks Baseball.

German MarquezGerman Marquez has thrown 3,527 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2016 and 2018, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season and Spring Training. In 2018, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (96mph) and Curve (80mph), also mixing in a Sinker (94mph), Slider (86mph) and Change (86mph).

His fourseam fastball generates more whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' fourseamers, has well above average velo, results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' fourseamers and has slightly less natural movement than typical. His curve is slightly harder than usual and has primarily 12-6 movement. His sinker has slightly above average velo. His slider has primarily 12-6 movement. His change (take this with a grain of salt because he's only thrown 19 of them in 2018) is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' changeups, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' changeups and is slightly firmer than usual.

Sean's Thoughts: Marquez beat the Cubs at Coors last year in 8 shutout innings. His strike out rates are very low, he gets a lot of ground ball contact. Trying to elevate the ball in the thin air would be helpful.

I'm glad to see the top two are the same. The last 7 games Albert A's slash line is .500/.542/773 and Javy's is .355/.355./710. I can't see any other top two in the majors doing that well. I know Joe likes to change things up but why mess with this. Dernier and Sandberg and Fowler and KB worked pretty well, we could be talking about Albert and Javy in the same way.
    Let's win this series!

Oh! That's painful to watch. I hope KB is alright, that could easily be a concussion or worse. There seems to be growing bad blood between these two teams.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

I don’t think that was intentional.

    In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

I don't think so either, but there have been a number of players hit this series--and Rizzo just got plunked again and he didn't look too
    pleased.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

On the radio, Pat and Ron said the Cubs have been hit 21 times. The next highest team total is 12. Our pitchers have plunked the opposition 10 times.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Not sure on Rizzo. Didn’t see that one. Bryant he had him down 1-2 in the count and actually thought he had him struck out. Was scary scene

  • With Russell struggling at the plate, I wonder if LaStella will start more often. Russell is so consistent defensively, though.

  • The Cubs have been doing a much better job at putting the ball in play, even if it's an out. I recall someone debating once, on this very site, that a KO is the same as any other out. I feel strongly that a KO is much worse than a regular out, unless it's a double play of course. (LOL).

  • Okay, after watching Almora put on a clinic the last 2 days with no less than 3 ridiculous catches, I'm officially going to boycott the team the next time I see Happ out there and leading off !!!

    Almora has simply been amazing.

  • Q looking similar to Darvish in that they were palatable for 4 innings and then POOF, the wheels came off.

  • In reply to INSaluki:

Because Heyward misplays a ball it is Q’s fault and he is accused of imploding?

  • Quintana not fooling em right now. They’re barreling him up. Nice DP though to end it.

  • I wonder why Maddon is emptying the bench in the 6th inning? Don't get it.

  • Bryant passed all concussion tests and shows no signs of a concussion as of right now. Could change

  • Baez continues to rake.Yessssss

  • That was yuuuge... Nice insurance runs there....

  • Don’t look now but Heyward’s wRC+ is 116. Get that the rest of the way and we’ll stop talking about him as a liability

  • In reply to TC154:

At the start of the year I asked for a 95 and would gladly take that.

Unfortunately, IMO, his defense has fallen this year. He’s had more questionable plays so far in 3 weeks than the last 2 years. I haven’t looked at any metrics, but he hasn’t appeared as solid as the past.

  • In reply to rbrucato:

Not worried long term. To me it’s a combination of a few bad reads and some bad luck. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone play right field in Wrigley as well.

  • Whew, Almora. I listened to an interview with him this morning saying he's not afraid of walls, especially the ones at Coors. He said the ones at Wrigley are harder.

  • Man this game was intense

  • One more time, Almora/Baez lead the way. Cub team earned this one.

  • I'm glad to get the series win. Sure hope our closer steps up his game - his performance today was pitiful. Carl Jr., on the other hand, seems to be on another level this year! Davis and Haines were ejected after Kris was hit?

    In reply to Cliff1969:

pitiful? Tough crowd What's your description if/when he actually blows a game and gets a L ?

  • Javier Baez has a .365 ob % people.Budding star and a big time difference maker

  • In reply to bolla:

    Was there ever any doubt?

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

    No...?

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

Reading this forum yes. Several cubs den posters wanted baez traded for years

  • The only way this game was supposed to end... A replay overturn on a wild pitch play at the plate. Go Cubbages!

  • Those three catches by Almora? Sheesh...keep the man in the lineup Joe!!
