Game Recap

Solo homers by David Bote and Mark Zagunis staked the Cubs to a lead. Freshly promoted Zach Hedges, making his first start of the year, held the Redbirds scoreless through three but they got to him for three in the 4th. The score remained 3-2 until the 8th.

A bases loaded double by Zagunis brought home two. It also put the Cubs in the lead once again. Chris Gimenez added a sacrifice fly and Chesny Young a run scoring single before the inning ended. The Cubs continued to rally in the 9th. Ryan Court led off with the team's third solo blast of the game. Mike Freeman and Bote added on with RBI singles to extend the lead.

Someone besides David Bote finally has gone yard for the I-Cubs. A 4th inning homer by Mark Zagunis was just the 4th home run of the year hit by the club. Bote's third home run of the season came in the top of the 3rd, making it his second consecutive game going deep. Ryan Court added his first of the year in the 9th. Bote may be the only consistent power threat on the team this year, at least until Jason Vosler and/or Ian Rice are summoned from Tennessee.

Game Recap

Wladimir Galindo

Wladimir Galindo

Unlike the Iowa game this one was in little danger from the jump. A three-run first put the Pelicans in early command and then homers by Wladimir Galindo and Tyler Alamo helped add six more in the 3rd and 4th. Alex Lange and Tyler Peyton weren't perfect in their piggyback performances but were good enough for the Pelicans to cruise to the finish. Lange in particular had to work hard to get through his four innings as he ran up high pitch counts in all of them.

Top Performers

  • Wladimir Galindo: 2-5, HR (1), 2 R, 3 RBI
  • Tyler Alamo: 2-5, HR (2), R, 3 RBI
  • Vimael Machin: 1-2, 2B, 3 R, RBI, 3 BB
  • Chris Pieters: 1-2, RBI, 3 BB, SB (2)
  • Kevonte Mitchell: 3-4, BB
  • D.J. Wilson: 1-5, 2 R, BB, SB (2)
  • Alex Lange: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K
  • Tyler Peyton: 3 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 3 K (W, 1-0, 2.08)

I guess getting your cleanup hitter and then your leadoff man back in the lineup after missing a week can make a difference. D.J. Wilson returned after missing six games due to illness. He has drawn a walk in each of the five games he has played. He missed a week between games, but Wladimir Galindo has two hits in three consecutive games.

Vimael Machin has reached base at least three times in four straight games after reaching just twice over his first six. His batting average is still just .222 but his OBP has climbed to .378.

  • Alzolay ramped up to 75 pitches in EXST this weekend. He should join Tennessee in the near future. Either later this week, or early next week depending on if they want to get him one more game in Mesa

  • Bote a fun kid to root for. My son and I have our hotel and tickets for an early weekend in June for Des Moines. AAA is almost as good a brand of baseball as 'the Show' with better and less expensive seats. Rooms have become costly in Iowa. Des Moines must be the place go be these days.

  • In reply to 44slug:

Des Moines is rapidly growing and is a really nice mid-size city in the Midwest

David Bote looks like he's really put on some muscle since I saw him play a couple years ago.
