Game Recap

A rough 1st inning in which Duane Underwood (5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K) was tagged for four runs put the I-Cubs in comeback mode all night long. Underwood righted the ship from there but defensive miscues led to additional runs as the game progressed. The offense did manage to pull within one in the bottom of the 7th but dried up from there and the RedBirds extended their lead back to four off Shae Simmons and Cory Mazzoni in the final two innings.

Another solid outing by Trevor Clifton, solid work from the Smokies pen, and timely hitting led to another victory to pull Tennessee over the .500 mark. It took extras to accomplish it though. Craig Brooks held the Jumbo Shrimp scoreless in the first frame of Arena League Baseball and then in the bottom half of the inning Eddy Martinez singled home Yasiel Balaguert to secure the walk-off win.

Game Recap

Is two games considered a winning streak? When you are 5-12 it does. Myrtle Beach took their second straight from the Wood Ducks in a game that featured a thrilling catch by D.J. Wilson in center along with a chilling moment in the 7th when Pelicans reliever Casey Bloomquist was struck in the head by a comebacker. Bloomquist would leave under his own power and report on Twitter after the game that he was okay.

Three Pelicans relievers, including Bloomquist, combined to toss four shutout innings in relief of Alex Lange (5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, BB, 4 K). The Pelicans had been behind since Lange had been unable to retire the first two batters in the 6th and the runners came around to score against Bloomquist to put them behind 4-2. A run in the bottom of the 6th brought them within one, and then a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Daniel Spingola brought in two more runs in the 8th. Wyatt Short struck out the side in the 9th for his first save of the season.

Top Performers

  • Ryan Kellogg: 1.2 IP H, BB, 2 K (W, 1-1, 7.71)
  • Wyatt Short: IP, 3 K (S, 1)
  • Austin Upshaw: 2-4, R
  • Aramis Ademan: 1-3, 2 RBI, BB

Game Recap

Tyler Payne

Tyler Payne

A one out double down the left field line by veteran catcher Tyler Payne triggered a two-run bottom of the 3rd for South Bend. He'd move to third on a single by Zach Davis then score on a Roberto Caro sac fly. After Davis moved himself into scoring position by swiping his fourth bag of the season, Jhonny Bethencourt brought him home with a single of his own. It was all the scoring South Bend would need to snap their four-game winless streak and get back over the .500 mark at 7-6.

The South Bend staff, while it has been inconsistent, has provided a number of notable performances already. On Saturday it was Javier Assad. He punched out seven over five scoreless innings to improve to 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA on the season. It was the second time in three starts the young Mexican hurler posted five shutout innings. The 20-year old is really beginning to emerge as an arm to keep an eye on. He works his fastball up to 94 and mixes in both a curve and slider along with a change and has now struck out 86 batters over 80 innings since the start of 2017.

Brian Glowicki fired two perfect innings to secure the victory and his third save on the year. The 2017 10th rounder has been near flawless in early going, allowing just one hit (four walks) over his first eight innings this season.

  • Regarding the (let's pretend baseball is college football) extra inning silliness: Is there another situation in baseball in which a pitcher is tagged for the loss when he allows an inherited runner to score?

  • How cute Is that Uncle Trevor pic?

  • In reply to 44slug:

Very cute. Future Fast Pitch softball player in the making....

  • Wyatt Short's stats look good( ERA 0.00, ave .080, WHIP .52). Does he give the batters a different look because he is short?

  • Gotta love the name “Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp”, Ha Ha!
