Daily Cubs Minors Recap: Remillard with big night to keep Ems playoff hopes alive
Will Remillard

Iowa 5, Omaha 4

Game Recap

Down 4-1 heading into the top of the sixth it appeared that Iowa was on its way to a sixth straight loss. Despite just two hits in the inning, with a little help from the Omaha defense Iowa managed to score three times in the inning to tie it. This set the stage for John Andreoli to club a game winning home run to lead off the top of the seventh. The team may have lost Dillon Maples and Justin Grimm to the majors but the Iowa pen still possesses plenty of talent. Jack Leathersich, Pierce Johnson and Matt Carasiti each pitched a scoreless inning to secure the win and end the I-Cubs losing streak.

Top Performers

  • Stephen Bruno: 2-5, HR (9), 2 R, RBI

Jack Leathersich

Jacob Hannemann saw his 12 game hit streak come to an end. With the acquisition of Leonys Martin the chances of a September call up for Hannemann likely evaporated.

Steve Perakslis and Ozzie Martinez rejoined the Iowa roster to replace the departed September call ups. Both have previously spent time with Iowa this season.

The two doubles raised Taylor Davis's average to .295 for the year. He will need a strong close go the season to finish with a .300 average for the 4th time in his career.

September started off the same way that all of August went for Jack Leathersich. He struck out the side in his one inning of work and he has not allowed an earned run since July. His ERA since the start of June is 0.55, with 56 K in 32.2 IP.

Jackson 11, Tennessee 0

Game Recap

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Top Performers

  • Charcer Burks: 2-4, 2B, BB
  • David Bote: 2-3, BB
  • Preston Morrison: 3 IP, 2 H, R, 5 K (5.51)
  • Tommy Thorpe: 2 IP, K (0.00)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Don't be too hard on Matt Swarmer (4 IP, 13 H, 10 R, 6 K). Somebody has take on these late season innings in the upper levels, even if they aren't ready for it. Swarmer actually pitched 7 shutout innings for Iowa on Aug 19, but his two fill in starts for Tennessee have not gone as well. Still, for a guy that has spent the majority of his season in short season and low-A ball.

West Michigan 4, South Bend 0

Game Recap

A tough loss for South Bend. It dropped them two games behind Bowling Green with three games to play. Thankfully, the Cubs three remaining games are against Bowling Green. They will need to take all three in order to secure a playoff berth and complete what would be a an amazing comeback.

Top Performers

  • Alberto Mineo: 1-3, 2B, BB
  • Tyler Payne: 1-3, 2B, BB
  • Austin Upshaw: 1-3, BB
  • Erling Moreno: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 3 K (L, 2-4, 4.22)
  • Tyler Peyton: 3.1 IP, 3 H, BB (3.19)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Should the Cubs lose any of their final three games I would not be shocked to see a couple of players elevated to Myrtle Beach in order to get them some playoff exposure. Now many of these players were part of the championship Eugene club last season, but not all of them. I could see a lefty like Jose Paulino, Wyatt Short or Bryan Hudson providing a boost to the Pelicans staff. A little extra bullpen help in the form of Mark Malave, Chad Hockin or Jhon Romero wouldn't hurt either. D.J. Wilson would provide the Pelicans with an offensive boost in CF while not causing any drop off in defense despite the talents of Connor Myers in the outfield.

Eugene 12, Salem-Keizer 4

Game Recap

Two huge innings drove the Emeralds to victory. And right in the middle of both a five-run third and a six-run sixth was Will Remillard. He stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in each inning and both times delivered a double. One cleared the bases, the other drove home two. He finished 3-for-5 with five runs batted in on the night. He wasn't the only offensive hero though. Gustavo Polanco drove in three, Jhonny Bethencourt reached base five times and five different players scored two times in the game.

Top Performers

  • Will Remillard: 3-5, 2 2B, 2 R, 5 RBI
  • Gustavo Polanco: 2-5, 3 RBI
  • Jhonny Bethencourt: 2-3, 3B, 2 R, 2 BB
  • Austin Filiere: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 BB
  • Jared Young: 2-5, 2 R, RBI, BB
  • Javier Assad: 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K (W, 5-6, 4.23)
  • Elvis Diaz: 3 IP, 2 H, BB, 4 K (1.72)
  • Luis Aquino: IP, H, K (1.99)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

It is hard not to root for Will Remillard. After missing the past two seasons due to two separate TJS he is back and making up for lost time. In his first 5 games with Eugene he has hit .474/.565/.632.

Gustavo Polanco

Gustavo Polanco

Jared Young extended his hit streak to 4 games, which seems modest, but the last 3 have been multi-hit affairs and he now has 10 hits in his past 3 games. He has raised his average 58 points in three days. Not bad.

Gustavo Polanco extended his own hit streak to 7 games.

Jhonny Bethencourt has now reached base 18 times in his last 10 games.

Since Aug 20 Austin Filiere is slashing .375/.519/.675.

Boise also won yesterday which means the Emeralds will need some help in the final days.

  • Hoping to see Leathersich get another shot once Iowa season ends. Been pitching well and is a K machine. Should be in the mix next year too I would think.

  • In reply to DirkDiggler:

    Leathersich DFA.

Looks like he'll be doing it somewhere else.

  • In reply to LOB8591:

Haha I saw that! Ah well. We'll always have that one appearance in July where he walked everyone to remember him by.

  • In reply to DirkDiggler:

Yeah I'm pretty surprised Leathersich was DFA.... as well as w/the acquisition of Martin. They already have Jay, Almora & Happ that are decent speed outfielders. Heyward not bad either.

  • In reply to Milk Stout:

Jacob Hannamen is on the 40 as well

  • Does anyone know what happened with the 40 man roster? I've been trying to see how things were moved around to accommodate the new players and call-ups.......

  • In reply to Treebeard:

In looking at the 40 man roster, one player I would not be surprised if he was included in the Leonys Martin deal is Duane Underwood Jr.

  • In reply to Tom U:

I would be a little surprised by that. I'd guess more someone who is eligible for rule V is the guy who goes. Either before the deadline to add them to 40 man, or right after the rule V draft. My money is on either Burks, Stinnett, or Vosler.

  • In reply to DirkDiggler:

I'm probably wrong about this but anybody on the 40 man roster has to go through waivers at this time. Those not on the 40 can be traded at will. I don't imagine anyone on the 40 would clear waivers so perhaps they have to be a PTBNL.

  • In reply to LOB8591:

True, but there would also be worry about players in relation to rule V
