Bullpen Usage:

via Baseball Press.

Opposing pitcher:

Scouting Report from Brooks Baseball.

Patrick Corbin: His slider generates a high number of swings & misses compared to other pitchers' sliders and has some two-plane movement. His fourseam fastball results in somewhat more groundballs compared to other pitchers' fourseamers and has slightly above average velo. His sinker is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' sinkers and has slightly above average velo. His change generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' changeups, results in many more groundballs compared to other pitchers' changeups and is slightly firmer than usual. His cutter (take this with a grain of salt because he's only thrown 2 of them in 2017) is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' cutters, is an extreme flyball pitch compared to other pitchers' cutters and has slightly above average velo.

Sean's note: The Cubs pounded Corbin at Wrigley for eight runs over three innings, including Jon Lester's first career home run. So they clearly see him well from the plate.

Final Thought:

The Cubs brought the bats in last night's 8-3 win. Almora hitting leadoff is interesting, especially with his success against lefties. Hoping for a longer outing from Lester than his last appearance against Arizona.

Almora & Rizzo do some offensive/defensive highlights tonight. I just don't like Avila hitting 8th. But what do I know.

  • fb_avatar

Oh yeah, good write up on the game.

  • fb_avatar

Albert A leading off? I think he can do it and he has shown that he can take pitches and draw a walk too.

  • In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

    Agreed. It's about time.

  • I was at the game last night, and Javy's scoring from first was a thing of beauty. He broke for second with the pitch on a steal, and I wondered as he passed second whether he was going for the plate. I said to my wife that it would take a perfect throw to get him, and Javy apparently came to the same conclusion. Sure is fun to watch (except on that low outside slider with 2 strikes)!!

  • In reply to wthomson:

It is a treat to watch ballplayers in person. TV, not to mention numbers on a computer screen, don't do players like Javy justice.

  • I understand why Avila and his .130 avg vs LHP is in the lineup, but Schwarber over Jay (.310 vs LHP) in LF is a head scratcher.

Almora is becoming one of my favs. Want him starting everyday with his growing confidence and swag.

    In reply to TTP:

I missed innings 2-5, so I don't know if the Schwarbenator has had a good game or not, but I agree 100%, he should not be in the game. John Jay should have continued to hit leadoff until it stops working. It doesn't matter whose pitching.

I would have loved to see Almora hitting behind Rizzo in this spot. Let him get some AB's w runners on which should mean RBI's if he continues mashing lefties.

All I know is its 0-0. Had to know Corbin wouldn't get rocked again, but a shutout, come on?

  • What in the actual Hell is up with the cardinals? Did they stumble on a box of McGwire's old "supplements"?

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Stubbs:

2 outs, bases loaded. Freddie Freeman up in the top of 9th down 6-3

Can we get a bases clearing double?

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

Freeman w a single. 6-5. Now up to nick markakis.

Oh too bad Matt Kemp is on the DL still.

  • fb_avatar

Wow, JD Martinez. What a rope Now you know why I wanted the Cubs to add him so bad. Keep him away from our enemies!

  • Right move to walk goldy. Tough lineup to shutdown this long though. Rizzo needed to step up with the bat. Instead, looks like a tie at the top.

As I write this, Baez makes me angry. Like palpably angry. Make the basic plays!

  • fb_avatar

Can you say self destruct. Javy you have all day. No reason to throw it as hard as you can esp when you see Goldy stop and ready for the run down.

I hate seeing this kind of stuff happen to us

  • fb_avatar

Time to make the Snakes pay for not PH for Corbin.

Lets go offense. 4 runs is nothing in this park.

  • fb_avatar

Lets go guys. We do not want the redbirds to be tied for 1st place tonight

  • fb_avatar

Here we go. Bryant up w 2 on......we need a big hit KB

    Carry us

  • Bryce Harper may have seriously injured his knee.Had to be helped off the field it did not look good.

    In reply to bolla:

Nats announcers don't sound to optimistic right now. They are really worried ( naturally).

He was screaming like crazy so it could really be bad. Wet base and plastic spikes = bad situation.

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

Best case scenario is an hyperextended knee but that looked nasty.

  • fb_avatar

This is the kind of game Justin Wilson needs to be pitching in

  • fb_avatar

    3-4-5-6 hitters

    0-15 w 1 walk and a combined 10 LOB

Our middle of the lineup just hasn't been getting it done. Hopefully Addy can give us a spark when he returns.

  • Just end this game already. It's been all downhill since the 6th

  • fb_avatar

Now Kris Bryant gets a hit w runners on.

Least Rodney throwing a lot of pitches.

  • This game, or series for that matter, doesn't have any bearing on the division race. Cubs need to beat their division foes. If they do, they'll get in. If they don't, they'll get a better draft position.

  • fb_avatar

No arrow shooting for you annoying Fernando Rodney-hood

  • fb_avatar

Hopefully Hernandez can't find the strike zone

I don't have much faith in Zobrist keeping this line moving w out a little help.

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

What do you mean this is Maddon's cleanup hitter?

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to 2016 Cubs:

What does he cleanup this year? The spread after the game?

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to 2016 Cubs:

I wonder how JD Martinez would look in the middle of our lineup?

Well, Joe probably wouldn't be able to find more then 2-3 starts a week for him anyway. Prob bat him leadoff anyway.

  • That last strike call on zobrist was absolutely awful.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to bolla:

Brutal. Looking at it live and from the right handed batters box view, it looked soooo low. If you look at it on pitch track, it was really really close, still a ball though.

  • In reply to Jim Odirakallumkal:

Yea it was close on the pitchcast but it was a non swing and when the catcher caught the ball his glove hit the dirt.Terrible call it would of been a full count with 2 on but the cubs had their chances earlier so it's whatever. That call was just awful.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to bolla:

Yup. your right, Cubs had their chances and didn't capitalize.

Cubs probably were not coming back, but they should have had a chance to decide their own fate. I just hate to see a game end on a horrible call.

  • I actually thought the cubs were done ,that was a good rally with 2 outs down 6-0 with the closer in.
