AAA

Iowa 8, Omaha 1

Game Recap

Victor Caratini

Victor Caratini

A refreshing easy victory for Iowa Saturday. They have been few and far between since April. The offense jumped on Omaha starter Josh Staumont for 4 in the 1st and 8 runs in total through the first 3 innings. With two outs in the first, Victor Caratini singled in Jacob Hannemann, then Stephen Bruno doubled home Bijan Rademacher and Caratini. Taylor Davis followed with a third straight two out hit to bring home Bruno. Caratini drove in two more in the second. Mark Zagunis hit a two run homer in the third to cap the scoring.

Meanwhile, Aaron Brooks turned in his best start of the season. He went 7 innings for just the second time, holding Omaha to just 4 hits and a walk. The only run against him came on a 4th inning home run from former top ten pick Bubba Starling. Ex-Cub Jorge Soler went 2-3 with a double. He is hitting .305/.424/.695 for Omaha after struggling to a .565 OPS with the Royals earlier this year.

Top Performers

  • Aaron Brooks: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, BB, 6 K (W, 4-5, 6.10)
  • Victor Caratini: 3-4, R, 3 RBI
  • Mark Zagunis: 2-5, HR (10), 2 R, 2 RBI
  • Jacob Hannemann: 2-5, 2 R, SB (7, 13 overall)
  • Taylor Davis: 1-2, R, RBI, 2 BB

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Aaron Brooks is still on the 40 man roster and the arm strength and groundball ability that attracted the club when they acquired him in the Chris Coghlan trade is still there. But injury and inconsistency has held him back. One thing that Brooks has consistently provided for Iowa this year though has been much needed innings. With so many starters in and out of the rotation for the club, Brooks has failed to go at least 5 innings only once in 14 starts.

It was good to see Stephen Bruno and Taylor Davis contributing again. The two have been mired in terrible slumps, each hitting under .200 this month. Hopefully this performance can act as a slump-buster.

The 10th home run by Mark Zagunis ties his career high set last season.

Chattanooga 7, Tennessee 5

Game Recap

Trey Martin

Trey Martin

Four solid innings of work by Jen-Ho Tseng were bookended by two rough ones. Chattanooga touched him for 3 runs in the 1st (all earned) and then 4 runs in the 6th (all unearned). The Smokies offense made a game of it however. Back-to-back jacks by Ian Rice and Carlos Penalver and an RBI single by Erick Castillo gave Tennessee the lead in the 2nd. They would extend the lead to 2 on a Trey Martin RBI single in the 4th.

Top Performers

  • Ian Rice: 2-4, HR (9), R, 2 RBI
  • Carlos Penalver: 1-4, HR (2), R, RBI
  • Trey Martin: 3-5, 2B, RBI
  • Jason Vosler: 1-3, R, BB
  • Jen-Ho Tseng: 6 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (L, 6-2, 2.85 ERA)
  • David Garner: 2 IP, 2K

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Trey Martin extended his hit streak to 5 games.

Ian Rice has continued to hit for power, but he has seen his OBP plummet in June as he has struggled with his plate discipline (13 K and 1 BB in 37 June ABs). Overall he is still hitting .253/.360/.475 on the year.

Tennessee drew over 8,000 fans for the first time in their history. It was Jimmy Buffett night.

Game Recap

Ryan Kellogg (photo by Stephanie Lynn)

Ryan Kellogg (photo by Stephanie Lynn)

Ryan Kellogg continued the string of impressive starting pitcher performances and the bullpen, despite a blown save (on an unearned run) by Pedro Araujo, struck out 5 over 4 innings, allowing only that one unearned run and just 2 hits. In the 10th, Bryant Flete came up with a pinch-hit, go-ahead single that bounced off the 1st base bag. Trent Giambrone delivered a solo homer later in the inning as insurance.

Top Performers

  • Ryan Kellogg: 6 IP, 3 H, R, 3 BB, 4 K
  • Pedro Araujo: 2 IP, H, R, 0 ER, 4 K (BS, W, 4-0, 1.99 ERA)
  • Scott Effross: IP, H, BB, K (S, 4)
  • Trent Giambrone: 2-4, HR (7), R, RBI, BB
  • Matt Rose: 1-3, HR (11), R, RBI, BB
  • Andruw Monasterio: 2-4, 2B, R

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

That is 3 home runs in the past 4 games for Trent Giambrone. A 5 game hitting streak has his line up to .232/.282/.368 on the year.

Pedro Araujo not only earned the win, but also learned he has been named a Carolina League All-Star.

The Pelicans are 14-2 in June. They have outscored their opponents 79-35 and pitched 5 shutouts (including a club record 3 in a row). The bullpen ERA is 0.25 over 36.2 innings since June 5th.

A

Lake County 5, South Bend 3 (10 innings)

Game Recap

Jose Paulino

Jose Paulino

A bad call, along with bad base running and issues coming through with runners in scoring position led to a tough loss for South Bend. Manager Jimmy Gonzalez was tossed arguing a home run call in the 9th that tied the game up. The South Bend field has a chain link fence above the wall by the camera well in left center field. Junior Soto, who had already homered twice in the game, drove a pitch from Wyatt Short off that fence and back into play, but the umpires ruled it a home run after a conference apparently unaware of the ground rules at the stadium. Marte had victimized Jose Paulino twice with solo home runs earlier in the ball game. They were the only two runs Paulino allowed.

After the controversy the Cubs had the opportunity with a man in scoring position to end it in the bottom of the 9th but couldn't get Jhonny Pereda home after his double. Wyatt Short would give up an actual home run in the tenth to give Lake County the win.

Top Performers

  • Jose Paulino: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, BB, 7 K
  • Chad Hockin: 2 IP, H, 3 K
  • Chris Pieters: 3-3, 3B, R, 2 BB, SB (4), CS (4)
  • Jhonny Pereda: 2-3, 2B, R, BB

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Chris Pieters

Chris Pieters

Outfielder Chris Pieters (.243/.370/.414) reached base in all five of his trips to the plate. The former pitcher from Curacao is a good athlete that is still raw at the plate and struggles to make contact but he has an improving eye, emerging power and with the injury to Wladimir Galindo is being given the opportunity to move into the cleanup spot.

Chad Hockin dropped his ERA back below 4.00. The 6th rounder last year from Cal State Fullerton last season has missed bats (29 K in 27.2 IP), allowed few base runners (1.08 WHIP) and generated plenty of ground balls (1.62 GO/AO) but has been plagued by the home run ball (4).

The Cubs ran into 4 outs on the base paths.

A-

Eugene 4, Vancouver 2

Game Recap

The game began just as the first two in the series did with Vancouver jumping out to an early lead (2-0 after 1) while the Eugene offense struggled to mount any sort of threat. Finally, with the help of the third error of the game by the Vancouver SS, Eugene broke through for 3 runs in the 6th. After the error allowed Rafael Narea to reach to begin the frame, Miguel Amaya followed with a single and Gustavo Polanco with a double that scored brought home both runners. A Jhonny Bethencourt double later in the inning drove in Polanco. Eugene would tack on a run the next inning thanks to a wild pitch that moved Rafael Narea into scoring position. Miguel Amaya would come through with an RBI single.

Yapson Gomez

Yapson Gomez

Vancouver took advantage of a terrible first inning by Emeralds starter Bailey Clark. A pair of doubles and a pair of walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch allowed two runs to score. Clark would settle in though. He retired the final 9 batters he faced in order, including 4 strikeouts and 3 ground outs. Yapson Gomez then came on to provide 3.1 innings of stellar relief, holding them to a single base runner (a walk) and striking out 4. Michael Knighton shut them down over the final two innings to earn the save.

Top Performers

  • Yapson Gomez: 3.1 IP, 0 H, BB, 4 K (w, 1-0)
  • Michael Knighton: 2 IP, H, K (S, 1)
  • Gustavo Polanco: 2-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI
  • Miguel Amaya: 2-4, R, RBI, BB
  • Jhonny Bethencourt: 1-4, 2B, RBI, SB (2)
  • Rafael Narea: 1-3, 2 R, BB

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Gustavo Polanco, normally a catcher, playing 1B and taking the pickoff throw

Gustavo Polanco, normally a catcher, playing 1B

The one hitter that has gotten off to a quick start this series is Gustavo Polanco. He is 5 for 12 with a hit in each game so far. Polanco has some experience at catcher, and does possess a strong arm, but the rest of his defensive game is uneven. He has played 1B twice and DH once in this series. With Miguel Amaya figuring to take the bulk of the time behind the dish and veteran Tyler Payne appearing to be the main backup, I am not sure how many games Polanco will get as a catcher. He played about 2/3 of his games at 1B last year in Arizona.

Bailey Clark and Yapson Gomez combined to retire 15 straight hitters during the game.

I don't know anything about him, but 6'0" 175 lb lefty Didier Vargas has gotten off to a great start with the Cubs2 team. The 18 year old Panama native is 1-0 with a 0.63 ERA in three starts (14.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 12 K).

  • I was wondering why Galindo hadn't been playing, what happened to him?

  • In reply to Treebeard:

I'm not sure of the specifics of the injury but he had surgery earlier this week and his leg was in a cast. Seems like he is done for the year. I have seen any confirmation on what part of his leg he even injured or a timetable though.

  • In reply to Michael Ernst:

That sucks.......that really sucks, he was having a great season...........

    In reply to Michael Ernst:

Anytime a sentence includes the words "surgery" and "cast" nothing good can come of it for a ball player.

  • Hannemann is doing well lately, 10 out of 26 in his last 6 games. Nice to see someone with good speed doing well.
