Zack Hedges was solid through 6.2 innings, posting a quality start but falling behind the Biscuits early.  The Smokies cut the early lead to 2-1 on this Cael Brockmeyer HR...

...and then went on to tie the game when David Bote singled and Jacob Hannemann scored when the Biscuits catcher missed the throw.   Hedges, however, would allow one more run in the top half of the 6th and that proved to be the difference in the game.

Top Performers

Zach Hedges

Zach Hedges

  • Zack Hedges: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 Ks
  • James Pugliese: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
  • Cael Brockmeyer: 1-3, HR, BB
  • Jeffrey Baez: 2-4, 2 doubles

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Zack Hedges fell to 5-3 with a 2.79 ERA.  Hedges has an excellent BB rate of 1.68 per 9 IP and a 3.01 FIP.

Cael Brockmeyer his his 2nd HR in 2 days and 3rd overall.  He is still hitting just .145.

Jeffrey Baez is hitting .367 in his last 30 ABs over 8 games.  He has raised his average to .248.

Advanced A

Buies Creek 6 - Myrtle Beach 2

Game Recap

It was another tough start for Thomas Hatch who gave up 4 runs in the first two innings and 5 overall.  The Pelicans got an RBI single from Eddy Martinez in the first and then Tyler Alamo closed the gap to 4-2 with his 5th HR.

Top Performers

  • Tyler Alamo: 1-4, HR
  • PJ Higgins: 2-4, double
  • Eloy Jimenez: 1-3, walk
  • Jesse Hodges: 1-3, walk

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Andruw Monasterio and Carlos Sepulveda

Andruw Monasterio and Carlos Sepulveda

Thomas Hatch fell to 0-4 with a 6.27 ERA.  The good news is Hatch is still missing bats (9.27 Ks per 9 IP) and his FIP of 3.69 bodes well for improvement later in the season.  Hatch has had bad luck on balls in play (.357 BABIP) and with his strand rate (46.6%).  Those two numbers are likely not sustainable but Hatch has to cut down on his walks (6 per 9 IP) to have success.

Tyler Alamo's power has to be an encouraging development for the Cubs.  Alamo has always had raw power and strength, but a maturing approach has that power showing up in games.

Andruw Monasterio made his first start after getting assigned to Myrtle Beach to fill in for injured 2B Carlos Sepulveda.  Monasterio went 1-4.

  • John, good work. Which prospects do you think might get traded

  • I got your back John

    Propect Profile:

AAA - Victor Caratini can hit for average.

AA - James Pugliese hardly ever gives up runs.

High A - Daniel Spingola seems to get at least one hit in every game.

Low A - Wladimir Galindo is a good player.

    You welcome.

  • If we need 2 SP by next year do we have them in the minors?

  • I wonder if the Braves might try to trade for Candelario with Freddie Freeman out awhile. They did sign James Loney but not sure they will get much from him.

The Braves have a ton of young pitching. The Cubs need pitching or they will next year. Candy is blocked in Chicago and could play 1st until Freeman returns and then play 3rd after that. He would be an upgrade offensively and defensively over their current 3B Adonis Garcia. Some pitchers that they Cubs could target are:

    LHP Sean Newcomb
    LHP Kolby Allard
    RHP Mike Soroka
    LHP Luis Gohara

I like the idea, but I don't think the Braves are really trying to win this year so getting a replacement for Freeman while he's injured is prob not priority.

Although they def could use the Candy man longterm at 3B. I would love to get Newcomb or Allard and add them to our system of young power arms. I just not sure if the Freeman injury makes things any more urgent ! Would be nice if did and they semi panicked and made a big move for Candy.

They are trying to win or they wouldn't have traded for Brandon Phillips.

I think they traded for him to sell some tickets and not be pathetic w the opening of the new stadium. If they are truly going for it and thinking playoffs, you are right, they will make a move to try and weather the Freeman blow.

    Time will tell.

  • In reply to TD40:

IMO the Braves are not looking to trade one of their top pitching prospects for Candelario even if they needed a 1B/3B. They are not equal value.
