Ahh, good to have ol' Cub Baseball back. Anthony Rizzo pelting the pea all over the field, youngster Asmirendy Alcantra flying a hole in the wind………..Edwin Jackson……doing…..whatever it is he does. The Cubs started "The second half" of the season very much the way they played the first half- A very kaleptic bag of confidence and talent and never at once heading all in the right direction.  The Cubs got on the board first. Who else? Anthony Rizzo with a 440 right center field bomb in the 4th. 2-0 Cubs. Luis "The Batflip" Valbuena would double that inning and score on a Ryan Sweeney single. But back would come the Diamondbacks in the 5th Didi Gregorious and Nick Evans, two of the Diamondback weaker hitters would both single home runs. There was also a classic Edwin jackson wild pitch that threatened to tie the game but it bounced right back to Wellington Castillo. Rizzo would go KABONG again to make it 4-2 Cubs. But Jackson and THREE Relievers would give it all right back. Didi Gregorious knocking in the go ahead run against Zac Rosscup. The Cubs would have their chances but we've seen how this dance would go. 5-4 Diamondbacks. Everyone lookout for Scorpions on their way back to the hotel.

It's simply a matter of when with Edwin Jackson these days. He's gonna have one inning that negates the other four where he looks pretty good. And it always looks self induced And you never feel sorry for him. Personally I prefer the one where he gives it up in the 1st and then "Calms down" to get through 5 and 2/3rds or whatever. This time it was the 5th inning. After 4 fairly solid innings of work. His line doesn't look terrible. 5.1 IP, 7H, 3ER, 0 BB, while striking out 3. Love the 0 walks. There will be lots of calls for Jackson to be moved to the pen, but he simply doesn't throw enough strikes to be in the pen. Speaking of which…..

Ricky Ticky really fired through the bullpen last night and it made very little sense. Yes, everyone is healthy after a five day lay off, but is the 6th inning of the first game back really a time to play Tony LaRussa Bullpen. And if you are playing the Lefty righty card then why didn't Zac Rosscup, who should be in Iowa until he he understands what a "Strike" is, face the lefty Parra and instead faced Degregorious who drove in the winning run. Renteria went to the relief well three times in the 6th,each reliever gave up a hit. Only when he said "Ramirez- the 7th" did things calm down. Makes sense to me.

Can not stop saying enough good things about Anthony Rizzo. Kid is just red hot. Two more home runs- each a no doubt about it Bomb!. He's just locked in. Can't wait till he has a legitimate power hitter behind him.

So that wasn't a lot of fun. Another winnable game. I know a lot of people will point to the plan and the draft pick. But there are so many L's on this schedule that I'd really like to see the Cubs take advantage of the possible W's. This was one of them. Hopefully tonight is one of them too. Travis Wood, in constant rebound mode, takes the bump against Wade Miley. I hear that name and instantly want to see if the game is on Nickelodeon. Anyway, should be a fun one. Until then. Onwards.

  • We what W's for various reason, but the draft is very important to
their future. 4 or 5th is the best we can hope for

  • Felzz-theres rumors out there that the Stankees are looking at EJax-please someone make that happen , and soon. Frankly, I cant understaND WHY your worse starter is starting the 1st game back. Arrieta should have been starting.

  • In reply to mutant beast:

Obviously just to get him out of the way.
Now we can go several days without having to dread his next appearance.
    Very thoughtful of RR.

    In reply to mutant beast:

Probably they are trying to Limit Arrieta's innings as this is his first season as a full time starter.

He's on pace for 170 + innings while his career high is around 110 innings. Don't be shocked if they shut him down a week or two before the season ends.

  • Could the cubs dfa EJax and see if anybody puts in a bid for him?

  • In reply to pricewriter:

How bout we package him to the lakers with Carlos boozer??

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

Line of the day. This is going to crack me up for weeks. Thank you WTNY.

  • In reply to Greggie Jackson:

    I agree ...very good one

  • I agree. I was very confused about how Ricky used the bullpen last night.
Can't believe they pitched to Rizzo make someone else beat you.
With Baez playing second shouldn't AA being playing CF?

  • Also what is up with Wellington. Looked terrible at the plate.

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

Yes, for a good while now... Starting to feel he is not part of the future

  • In reply to Csanad:

Can't frame pitches, can't hit enough. Hmmm, what to do...?

Clock is ticking. Schwarber is going to force his way up on the fast track. As a catcher, his bat could make him an all-star. I hope he's adequate behind the dish, because that makes room in the lineup for all of Russell, Soler and Almora.

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

Swarber, Zagunis and all them dudes converted to catcher.

  • Wada and Beeler should get rotation spots. Hell, why not a six-man rotation?

    Why not?

Because Edwin doesn't belong. Put him in the pen - maybe he can keep his head for an inning or two and become a dominant reliever.

  • In reply to HackWilson09:

Good point, why not a 6 man? of course you would have to probably rob the bull pen of that extra guy.

    In reply to disappointed:

That would be a good idea as that would shorten Arieta's workload this year. We want him healthy and locked in to start next season when the games should matter.

Love the Meat Puppets reference, although you missed the word "backwards"

"They just stand there looking backwards, half unconscious from the pain."

And thank you. Now that song will be stuck in my head all day.

  • In reply to Mike Partipilo:

One of my favorite bands! Been so busy this morning I finally got to check out Fels recap.

  • "Pelting the pea". Sounds vaguely Clintonian. Lets not mix politics into these reports now ;-)

  • Babip gods did not like cubs last night. So many single grounders found holes, while the cubs got robbed on liners and hard hit balls

  • Gonna miss these recaps felzzy. Your unique writing style and ability to interject your brand of humor into the recaps always made me laugh out loud even when you were telling us how badly they played. Rest in peace Adam.

  • In reply to lets go cubs:

Agreed. Going back and reading some of Felzz's work...because. This news has been tough to bear today, and I'm struggling with how to deal. Looking back and laughing a bit seems somehow fitting, as it's how he has helped us all cope with a rough ball club.

  • In reply to lets go cubs:

Well said. A very funny stylish writer. Never met the fellow, but the news hit like a ton of bricks. All thoughts with those who knew him well.

  • r.i.p.
