According to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez, 27 year old Cuban RHP Dalier Hinojosa has defected from the national team in February.

Hinojosa still has to be cleared by the U.S. government before he can enter into an agreement with a Major League club.

The usual suspects -- the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers are also said to be interested.

According to Sanchez, Hinojosa throws a four seam fastball in the low to mid 90s, a two-seam fastball, a slider, curve, and a change-up.

The Cubs are also interested in RHP Miguel Gonzalez, as well as younger free agents OF Eloy Jimenez of the Dominican Republic, and SS Gleyber Torres of Venezuela.

You can read more about Hinjosa here, which is a piece back in 2010 when he threw two perfect games in a 3 month span.

The Dodgers offered $500 million over 2 years after seeing his grip on the change.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

Hmm. They must have upped the ante after admiring the way he wears his uniform.

  • In reply to John Arguello:

They also like the cut of his jib.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

Oh good... for a minute there, I was afraid the bidding could get out of control...

    Ohmigod.

I just noticed he's wearing a Guantanamo jersey. A location now synonymous with waiting forever in unendurable conditions. This man was born to be a Cub.

    In reply to Mike Moody:

Mike- that was a Great line!

  • Why the long face?

  • This is one easy way to build up our farm system. Do these players
have one age when there in the US and another back home?

  • In reply to emartinezjr:

Haha! Sometimes. It's more of a problem in the Dominican Republic, for some reason. Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Japan, Korea, and other countries don't seem to have the same issues, or at least not nearly as many.

  • John, any sense of who is a better prospect, this guy or Gonzalez?

Given the P deficit in the system and the increasing financial flexibility , you'd think they might try to grab both of these guys. The FA mkt for pitching looks pretty weak this upcoming offseason.

  • In reply to Carl9730:

Gonzalez appears to be the better prospect. Front line type stuff.

  • Is it better to spend big money on young unknown prospects or
middle age veteran pitchers? Also I don't think giving up a 2nd
    round draft pick is wise

  • In reply to emartinezjr:

Why would they have to give up a 2nd round pick?

  • Meanwhile, on the Farm:

At Iowa, Struck is showing a bit of occasional control issues but is absolutely owning the opposition through 5.

  • In reply to Eldrad:

    Baez with a GRAND SLAM!

    In reply to Eldrad:

    It's only the Sounds. :-)

  • In reply to Eldrad:

Also, Javy Baez and Tim Saunders hit grand slams in the same game.

  • In reply to Quedub:

Once again, Daytona brings the fireworks show to the home team's park...

  • Plus Baez collected his 16th walk of the season and 7th in the month of June.

  • In reply to Quedub:

I hope Bryant can do the same when he starts getting pitched around at this level.

  • In reply to Eldrad:

By all reports, he should. I expect him to already be able to do that and won't have to learn as he goes.

Might get flamed for saying this...But I wholeheartedly can't wait until the day Yadier Molina retires. He just keeps on hurting us.

    In reply to Marcel Jenkins:

I feel the opposite way. Same reason I wanted Albert to stay in St. Louis: when we win this thing, I want to beat a Cardinals team with Yadier Molina on it. It will feel like a bigger accomplishment that way.

  • In reply to Marcel Jenkins:

Pound for pound he might be the game's best player right now.
