Cubs prank Javier Baez?

Two photos of a white Mercedes.  The first is known to be Javier Baez's car, the second picture was taken by ESPN's Jesse Rogers in the HoHo Kam parking lot.

HA! Stuff like this is why I love Baseball and the atmosphere. I've been on many teams for a variety of sports and Baseball is always the one I have the most fun with on and off the field. We did things like this all the time and could always laugh it off no matter how extreme. Try messing with a guys car on the football team and there will be hell to pay.

Side note: I should have kept trying to pursue a baseball career. Heck, you can drive a Mercedes and never make it past A-ball lol

  • In reply to Marcel Jenkins:

Gotta get that first round bonus first!

    In reply to John Arguello:

No way in hell am I buying a Mercedes until I get the Starlin Castro contract. That signing bonus can disappear in a hurry, and if you don't make the majors, you can't earn it back.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

Very true -- but if you get $3M+ it's not that big a dent.

I would never do it now, but if you asked me when I was 19 years old, I can't promise you I wouldn't have done the same thing!

    In reply to John Arguello:

Exactly! I'm 21 and all I know is give me 3mil straight up and a nice chunk of that will be gone by the end of the year lol

  • A young 1st round draft pick could easily lease a Mercedes for less than a grand a month. Not a big deal. What should get more attention is how this kid sends $$ to his family and helps take care of his sister who has special needs......

Anyways, it's good to see the prank. To me, that shows acceptance from ones peers. They don't prank someone they unless they view them as a peer.....

  • In reply to HoosierDaddy:

I thought of that too. Sounds counterintuitive but you usually have to like and trust someone to prank them.

  • I'd like to know how they kept the alarm from going off! Sneaky.

  • Hmmm....good point. Wouldn't surprise me if they got into his locker and got his keys.

Just to add some perspective, that's a used 2006 or 07 Mercedes C230. That car probably ran Baez only about $13-$15K. That's for people who want to look wealthier than they are, or soon will be.

  • In reply to Mike Ogulnick:

    Thanks Mike!

  • In reply to Mike Ogulnick:

The reality is he probably just leased it while in AZ. He flew there from Jax, FL so unless he just purchased it there, it won't be making the trip to Daytona with him..... Looks like a temporary tag in the window, so he may have. That is unlikely though, because Florida charges an arm and a leg for transferring title/registration from another state. They gotta make up for no income tax somehow. We'll know in another month or so.

    In reply to HoosierDaddy:

It's somewhere in the neighborhood of $350-475 for a new tag in FL, only $80-100 to transfer if you already have a vehicle registered...don't think that will kill him.

  • In reply to Matt McNear:

Purchased a Ford Focus in Indiana from a friend. cost $1200 to register it in Florida.... a tad ridiculous, IMO.

  • In reply to HoosierDaddy:

I'd say they saw you coming.

  • John - I was not able to scroll through the pictures....Anything I am missing?

  • That's a good idea for a prank but they gotta come up with something better than Rookie on Board. Student Driver or Inmate Transfer or something.
