  • Brett Jackson doubled, stole 3rd, and scored on Darnell McDonald's single

    In reply to John Arguello:

Long time reader, made a facebook so I could comment on this site because I love it so much and it gets me through classes. Was this steal his idea or it come from the bench? not much upside stealing third in the first inning when you're already in scoring position.

  • In reply to NateDHummel:

    Thanks Nate!

I don't know about the steal. Unfortunately just following through twitter today. They're doing a lot of odd things though in this game. Example yesterday is Darwin Barney flied out and they let him stay at 1B so next hitter could practice situational hitting.

I think we can pretty much say they wanted to have him practice stealing 3rd but we won't see it that way in a real game.

  • Szczur walks and gets gunned down stealing by Rafael Lopez. Not sure how to feel about that one. Happy for Lopez though.

  • In reply to John Arguello:

Yah, it's all good Lopez maybe bypassing Brenly in the scheme of things.

  • In reply to TobaccopouchinIvy:

Good defender and arm -- and makes nice contact at the plate to all fields. I think hes a potential backup catcher.

  • Javier Baez with infield single
Brett Jackson with a sharp single, already 2 for 2.

  • If Bjax can just get his contact rate to 25% he can be an above average CF.

  • I meant strikeout rate

  • In reply to Paris:

    That's better :)

    And agreed.

  • I would love to see Bowden have a strong ST and force his way into a useful role. Maybe that can start with a strong showing today?

  • In reply to bwoodrum:

I think so. He looked good after a bad start to the season, both at Iowa and Chicago

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to bwoodrum:

Yup. If he could just be a 6th/7th inning guy that would be huge - given fujikawa and marmol hold up their end of the bargain. We seem to have alot more prospective arms for the pen this spring, which is never a bad thing

  • I know this is just an intrasquad game but so far so good with Brett Jackson. At the very least it should give him confidence going forward. Also don't remember who said it but I think Fujikawa is supposed to get an inning here as well.

    In reply to Furiousjeff:

Rogers tweeted that he will get an inning of work

  • In reply to Zachary Myers:

    Tribune Phil Rogers?.......OMG.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to CubsTalk:

    No!!! Jesse Rogers

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Zachary Myers:

    Books still out on Rodgers.
Don't know how to take his sense of humor.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Richard Cleven:

I like him. I started following him from his Blackhawks days. He's so much better than Levine.

  • In reply to Furiousjeff:

Ive read some scouts are really impressed by Fujikawas BP sessions. Maybe the Cubbies might have something really useful with him.

  • RBI double for Lillibridge.

Soler walks on 4 pitches, bases loaded.

  • Shawn Camp now in for White team. Blue team up 2-1.

  • Updated article...added Brett Jackson single video.

  • Fujikawa in.for Team Blue.

Sappelt doubles. He's also 2 for 2. Little guy can hit.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to John Arguello:

I like Sappelt. I think he could be an every day player. Not sure why he doesn't get any respect.

  • In reply to Zachary Myers:

Bit of a tweener. Not enough power for corner OF, defense questionable in CF.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to John Arguello:

Fast ball,Fastball, Fast ball, hung slider.
Let's see what he does against better pitching.
    Anybody but Lillybridge.

  • In reply to Richard Cleven:

Are you there? Very cool if so.. and thanks for the detail.

  • Baez wows crowd with nice defensive play in the hole.

  • Brett Jackson with ANOTHER single. 3 for 3.

Is the swing working? Looks like he was serious when he said he wants to make this team.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to John Arguello:

If he hits .350 in ST does he make the team in your opinion?

  • In reply to Zachary Myers:

I don't think so. They seem determined to have him work on it in AAA. It'll be a small sample here in the spring. I think they'd rather see a long stretch where pitchers adjust to him and his new swing -- then see how he reacts.

  • In reply to John Arguello:

John, thank you for posting this video of Brett Jackson. I really hope he keeps up the good hitting. I like the look of his new swing. Hope he makes the big club for opening day! I love his determination.

  • In reply to MikeWadle:

No problem. He's hit the ball hard today. No flukes. Hope it's a sign of things to come.

  • Jorge Soler makes his first out. Sky high fly out to LF. Sounds like he just missed it.

  • Valbuena just ripped a line drive 2 run HR.

  • fb_avatar

I don't know John. If Jackson absolutely rakes and Dejesus, who is said to have a nice bit of trade value, gets dealt he might force himself into the picture. At this point i'd be fine either way. If that swing is legit.

  • In reply to Marcel Jenkins:

I'd be cool with that and if someone wants to give the Cubs value for DeJesus than they have to do it.

  • Dave Sappelt just doubled off the wall for this 3rd hit of the day. 2nd double.

  • fb_avatar

Any word on how Alberto Cabrera is looking? He's one of the more intriguing guys for me this spring.

  • In reply to Marcel Jenkins:

As far as I know he gave up just the one run. But there were a lot of walks -- hitters working on laying off pitches, especially low in the zone.

  • 3 run walk off HR by Edwin Maysonet.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to John Arguello:

That guy just kills Cubs pitching.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

Exactly. Grand Slam last year...I think it was his only HR and now first game this spring. Must love seeing those Cubs pitchers.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to John Arguello:

He played for the Sounds most of last year, so I'm very familiar with him. If he hits 10 in the PCL this year I will be stunned. 5 would be a more do-able goal.

Speaking of the Sounds -- I can't wait for opening day. Hot Dog, nachos, beer, funnel cake lady screaming so loud the entire park can hear her, lucky lemonade vendor comin' around making everyone laugh.

    Ah, baseball.

  • If BJax goes North with the club out of ST and struggles and that leads to him being sent down, you may lose him.

If he does well in ST, send him to Iowa and let him keep having success and reward him with a call up when ready. It will seem like twice the reward and he will be full of confidence when he gets here.

No need to rush, we aren't going anywhere this season and nobody is beating down the doors for DDJ.

  • In reply to IrwinFletcher:

I agree with this for the most part. Right now nobody is beating down the doors for anyone but things change in spring training. If a team suffers an injury to their OF and need a veteran, he'll likely be on a lot of team's lists.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to IrwinFletcher:

This is something I considered as well which is why my stance has become either way i'm fine with it. I'm confident that Bjax has the makeup is takes to accept failure and try to come back stronger each time which is why i'm not too worried about losing him mentally.

  • The video of BJax's single is also off of a lefty - another good sign.

  • Good to see some love for BJaxx. We all understand it's very early, but what the hey!

Thnx. for the game updates, John:)

  • In reply to TobaccopouchinIvy:

Sure...I'm having pretty good time with it actually. Tomorrow's game is on the radio, so if I'm around (weekends are harder for me), then I'll do it again.

  • fb_avatar

You have to like how Soler has handled himself in these two games. Seems to be incredibly comfortable. I'm looking forward to what he can do this year.

Baez... you have to like how Soler has handled himself.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

Baez seemed better today. Maybe tried to do too much yesterday. Would love to see him adopt Soler's patient approach, though. Well, I don't know if it's in his personality to be that patient but at least absorb a little of it.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to John Arguello:

I don't know why, but I've always liked Soler the best of the three -- even though I acknowledge that Baez's tools are better -- so I'm just loving this. I hope he gets some ABs against better pitching (or, at least, less rusty pitching) to see what he can do with it.

Also, gotta love Jackson. I agree with you he'll be spending April and May, at least, in Iowa, but the new swing seems to be working.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

They're actually all pretty closely rated. I think Baez picked up some momentum this season and the fact that many think he can stick at SS separated him on prospects lists from the other two. I think if you were to consider them all OF'ers though, then it's pretty even across the board. Soler probaby has the best combination of tools and patience at the plate.
