Cubs DFA C Blake Lalli; Claim RP Miguel Socolivich

The Cubs continue to search for pitching, particularly for their bullpen, and today they picked up 26 year old RHP Miguel Socolovich.

Socolovich had a couple of stints with the Orioles, appearing in 6 games. In 10 1/3 innings of relief, he struck out six, walked six and allowed two homers.  He had a 6.97 ERA

He has spent most of the year at Baltimore's AAA affiliate, Norfolk, going 4-0 with a 1.90 ERA.  He struck out 52 and walked 14 in 52 innings, holding hitters to a .179 batting average.

The slightly built (6'1,155 lbs) Socolovich has a live arm (92 mph FB, good slider, change). He has shown swing and miss stuff and good control in AAA, but like we've seen with some Cubs rookies this year, that good control doesn't necessarily translate at the MLB level, and that was not been the case with Socolovich in his short sample with Baltimore.

  • I think picking up young players here and there and hoping for
good pickup is the way to go.

Cubs got Josh Hamilton in the 2006 Rule 5 draft and immediately traded him to the Reds for cash. I will never forget it as I was so pissed.

  • Lets hope Miguel does well with the Cubs.....

or Cubs fans will yell out and call him a son-of-a -ivich if he gives up too many homeruns....:)
