Okay, so maybe it isn't the deal we were hoping for yet, but the Cubs acquired 29 year old minor league veteran Justin Germano for cash considerations. Jairo Ascencio was designated for assignment.
What Germano has is great control, posting a 1.6 BB/9 IP walk rate in his 13 year minor league career. He's posted an ERA of 4.22 in that time.
As far as stuff is concerned, Germano throws a fastball in the 87-90 mph range, a slider, curve, and a change.
Germano has been a reliever his last three years in the majors but was a starter earlier in his career. He's also started in the minors.
In related news, Casey Coleman has been scratched from his start tonight in Iowa and is said to be headed to St. Louis with the team. Carrie Muskat tweets that Coleman is making the trip just in case Germano can't make it in time.
Sounds like a bigger deal is about to go down as the Cubs are making sure they have a starting pitcher available for tomorrow. Stay tuned.
