An abbreviated, yet all encompassing, Cubs recap

An abbreviated, yet all encompassing, Cubs recap
Justin Germano

Okay, this turned out to be a crazy evening with trades, and with Tom and Felzzy having work obligations, I really can't get to the usual details on the recaps.  Here's just a few highlights...

Cubs 14 - Pirates 4

The Cubs supported new starter Justin Germano, who pitched 5 solid innings.  Germano isn't going to light up radar guns, but he showed a good curve ball and an ability to change speeds and hit spots.

Starlin Castro, Darwin Barney, and Anthony Rizzo were the big stars.  Both Castro (10) and Barney (5) homered and had 3 hits.  Castro, in fact, just missed getting 2 HRs with a double high off the wall.  He's' been hitting the ball well lately and seems to be developing the power many of us have expected from him.  Barney was a double shy of the cycle and had a career high 4 RBI while Rizzo hit a 3 run HR (8).  Joe Mather and David DeJesus pitched in with a couple of RBI

New Orleans 5 - Iowa 3

LHP Chris Rusin didn't pitch as badly as the score would indicate as bad defense hurt him.  Only one of the 5 runs were earned as he struck out 6 and walked 2 in 5 innings.  Alberto Cabrera then finished up with 2.1 perfect innings.  7 up, 7 down with 4 via the strikeout.  The outing lowered his AAA ERA to 4.19.

James Adduci, 27, provided all the scoring with a HR and 3 RBI.  He went 2 for 5 on the day.  Dave Sappelt continued his July resurgence with another 2 hit day while Alfredo Amezaga pitched in 3 hits.

Tennessee 6 - Pensacola 3.....Tennessee 3 - Pensacola 2

Game 1: LHP Eric Jokisch pitched a complete game, going 7 innings and allowing 3 meaningless runs in the last frame.  He didn't walk anyone and sruck out 2.  He's 7-2 with a 2.99 ERA in AA and 10-6 with a 3.20 ERA overall.  Matt Szczur had 3 hits with a run scored, while Logan Watkins, Junior Lake, and Michael Burgess pitched in a pair of hits.  Greg Rohan had the big hit with a 3 run HR.

Game 2: The Smokies got a surprisingly good performance from struggling reliever Casey Harman.  The LHP started and went 4 scoreless innings, walking none and striking out 2.  Frank Batista got the save (19), though he gave up a rare run to make it close.  On offense Matt Szczur scored a run and had an RBI even though he went hitless.   Nate Samson had 2 of the team's 6 hits.

Daytona 8 - Fort Myers 4

PJ Francescon had a much needed strong outing after struggling for a few stars.  He went 6 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6.  On offense, John Andreoli (.393 OBP) got on base 4 times with 2 singles and 2 walks. Roni Torreyes had 2 hits, including a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI.  His average is now at .265 and his OPS is at .716.  CF Rubi Silva had 3 hits to put his average over .300 again (.301).  Rafael Lopez, Elieser Bonne, and Matt Cerda each chipped in 2 hits and an RBI.

Beloit 5 - Peoria 3

Knuckleballing RHP Joseph Zeller got the start and allowed 2 runs in 5.1 innings but it was LHP Sheldon McDonald who picked up the loss in relief when he gave up 3 runs ( 1 ER) in 1.2 innings of work.  His ERA is at 2.05.  2B Zeke DeVoss led off the game with a HR and went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored overall.  Pin-Chieh Chen is still seeing beach balls when he gets to the plate lately.  4 more hits raised his average to .267 and his OBP to .356.  He's hit .326 since June 1st.  Javier Baez? He had a double in 4 ABs.

Boise and Arizona had the night off

  • I was hoping for a play by play of the hugging. Intensity, duration, how many hands went for the butt, that kind of thing.

Look forward to seeing the new names in these recaps.

  • In reply to Carne Harris:

Me too, & I'm looking forward to seeing John's next Cubs top prospect list, should have a lot more pitchers on it.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

Hopefully, so far it's just going to be one, Vizcaino.

  • In reply to Carne Harris:

That would have been great. I just wanted to get it out there though. Was too tired to be creative :)

The Nightengale, not always a reliable source, tweets that Soriano has given a list to the Cubs of teams he would waive his NTC to go to.
