Some news and notes to go with your morning cup of coffee...
UPDATE: According to MLB.com's Jessie Sanchez. The Dodgers forked over $40M to sign Puig. That number is staggering to me because I've been told that not many scouts have seen him play. Dodgers are probably eager to make a splash with new ownership and with Puig the last international FA horse out of the barn, they took a big risk. It will be interesting to follow the careers of the 3 major Cuban FAs and see which deal pans out best. I'll have to see the rest of the deal, but that is huge on a guy who is largely a mystery right now. Kevin Goldstein did talk to one scout who said he was a talented player, but not at Soler's level. Keith Law recently said he has not talked to any scout who sees Puig as a better prospect than Soler.
UPDATE #2: ESPN's Enrique Rojas puts the deal at 7 years and $42M. A source tells Rojas that the Dodgers expect Puig to help the team soon, possibly this year (article in Spanish).
- Rogers writes that Jorge Soler "has had a difficult time getting clearance to begin his North American career", but the Cubs have just DFA'd Randy Wells to cut their roster to 39, indicating perhaps that Soler is on his way. This was reported by CSN's Patrick Mooney before the Cubs game and then again by Doug Padilla of ESPN. In the meantime, the Cubs have called up Rafael Dolis to fill Wells' spot on the 25 man roter.
- The Cubs won't get a reprieve for the $6M or so they are paying Marlon Byrd despite his looming 50 game suspension. Wittenmeyer quotes sources that state that, "the fact that Byrd had been released by the time his suspension took effect meant the balance on his contract turned into termination pay, creating a ‘‘closed door’’ on his 2012 salary because the contract is already considered paid off."
- Buster Olney tweeted the following, "Dodgers have scouted Bryan LaHair, and like other teams, they have concerns about defense. Maybe that won't matter, because they need help." LaHair has his limitations as stated on defense and also against LHP, against whom he has struck out 20 times in 35 ABs. On the other hand, he's cheap, he has plus power from the left side, and he has good OBP skills.
