Cubs draft LHP Anthony Prieto in 5th round

This will be the last of my individual profiles.  I'll group the other ones from here unless the Cubs make an especially intriguing pick.  This one might actually qualify...

Anthony Prieto

  • LHP
  • 5'11"
  • 175 lbs.
  • Americas, HS (TX)

Prieto is small, as you can see from his profile, but he generates easy low 90s heat because of a very sound delivery.  Injury issues caused his velocity to drop a bit.  Combined with atypical physical stature for a pitcher, Prieto wasn't going to go as high as his stuff would normally indicate.  Baseball America reports that he touched the mid 90s that had scouts buzzing.  Like a lot of McLeod/Wilken pitchers, Prieto is a good athlete who has potential for good command of all his pitches (fastball, curveball, change).
Interesting pick as you wonder how high a guy with his stuff and command would have gone if he was 6'3", 190 lbs.

  • I'm still here until Wed. morning. Can you please summaries
all these pitchers in terms of ability and potential

I'll probably sum things up at some point soon.

Another pitcher in the 6th round, Trey Lane. Really loading up. Throw enough darts against the wall, someone has to stick.

Make that Trey Lang. 6'3" RHP, Gateway CC, Arizona.

  • In reply to Just Win:

That's the strategy. All of these guys could be impact guys...or not make it to AA...but all it takes is to hit on one or two of them.

  • I lied. I did another write up. This one on Lang. Too interesting to ignore.
