CTA people: Don't attack drivers and be otherwise stupid!

People of the CTA! Can we all please promise to just be a little nicer to each other, and particularly to CTA employees? In the last month, there has been a rash of assaults on CTA bus drivers.

In late June, a man was charged with exposing himself to a driver in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood. just a few days later, another man boarded the #85A North Central bus and accused the driver of not picking him up. Then he threw a cup of coffee in the driver's face and began punching him. The driver is said to be scarred for life.

Now I see why the CTA installed those shields on the driver's side.

And then there are those who put themselves in harm's way or just end up there.

A 26-year-old Glenview man returning from the Gay Pride Parade last week fell off the Howard platform and electrocuted himself on the third rail. Awful.

And how about the 25-year-old from Orland Hills who had his phone snatched at the Belmont station. When he chased the two perpetrators into an alley outside the station, the perps starting beating him up as a crowd a 15 to 20 people gathered round to watch.

Way to man up, people of the CTA!

Finally, stupidity often can cause long train delays, such as happened last Sunday when some doofus left a suitcase on the Dempster Yellow Line platform and boarded the train. Skokie police shut down service in both directions while investigating what was in the suitcase.

Try not to be stupid people. And don't assault drivers. And please watch your step on the platforms.

Thank you.

  • Alot of bad stuff happens out on the buses. The bus stops are no better. I had something thrown at me just last week barely missing my head. I've seen some bloody fights on the bus, with an operator leaving a man with blood pouring from his head on the side of the road. I've seen kids try to kick open an "L" car window cracking it. Just stupid mischievous things. It's a wild world out here!!

  • However, we have to have an exemption put in place that allows bus riders to drag a driver out of the bus and beat them with foam bats when the drivers operate the bus like an a**hole.

Seriously, some of these drivers need to be removed from their duties, or sent for retraining. I swear some of them are ex-taxi drivers. They only know two positions on the throttle: full-on, and full-off. Lord forbid if you're standing while they jerk you around like a piece of swinging meat. Can't they learn to accelerate/decelerate smoothly? Many drivers do, so I know it's possible.

I'd like to see a black box installed on each bus that records g-forces. Any driver that exceeds 0.5 g's would be dinged, excluding emergency maneuvers. There's no good reason why they have to race up to the next bus stop and then go heavy on the brakes.

You really must see Bob Newhart's classic routine about bus driver school, especially the part about what happens to the lady with packages when he hits the brakes.

  • In reply to CCWriter:

Since Bob mentioned Chicago, 400 bus drivers just went through that course. However, thanks to Mr. CTA, not the last part on mispronouncing street names.

  • In reply to SpinyNorman:

The impression I got was that bus drivers and taxi drivers are from distinct demographic groups, for the most part.
